Part of Fortune in the Signs and Houses
The Lot of Fortune describes bodily life and livelihood. Fortune includes chance events that can bring gains or loss.[3] Paulus also assigns it possessions, reputation, and privilege.[1]A favorable placement traditionally points toward advantage in these affairs; a damaged one can describe poverty or bodily hardship. Its sign names the planet responsible for delivering the means of life, and its house identifies the area where Fortune's topics arise.

Schulman uses the day formula for every birth
Martin Schulman's Joy and the Part of Fortunereads Fortune as a path toward satisfaction. His construction moves the Sun to the Ascendant, then moves the Moon by the same arc and in the same direction. That gives Ascendant + Moon − Sun for every chart, with no night reversal.[5]
Augurine reverses the formula at night. For a night birth, Schulman's Fortune falls where this site places the Lot of Spirit. If you were born at night and want his sign reading, calculate your Lot of Spirit and read his passage for that sign. The Schulman passages below can also be read as the modern day-formula tradition, provided you keep that formula choice in view.
Part of Fortune in the Signs
Begin with Fortune's sign, then examine its traditional ruler.
Part of Fortune in Aries
An Aries Fortune puts livelihood under Mars. Its strongest readings join courage with a capable ruler; a damaged Mars can turn competition into loss.
Part of Fortune in Aries→Part of Fortune in Taurus
Venus gives a Taurus Fortune its promise of bodily pleasure and possessions. An exalted Venus favors gain; a fallen ruler can make enjoyment costly.
Part of Fortune in Taurus→Part of Fortune in Gemini
Mercury rules a Gemini Fortune through exchange and skilled speech. Solar visibility can strengthen that livelihood or leave its ruler badly weakened.
Part of Fortune in Gemini→Part of Fortune in Cancer
The Moon rules a Cancer Fortune and gives it a bodily emphasis. Nurture can sustain a livelihood, while harsh lunar testimony can unsettle that provision.
Part of Fortune in Cancer→Part of Fortune in Leo
Honor and authority belong to a Sun-ruled Fortune in Leo. The ruler’s strength shapes whether recognition brings a living and a position worth holding.
Part of Fortune in Leo→Part of Fortune in Virgo
Mercury gives a Virgo Fortune a livelihood through exact work. When it rules Spirit too, the same skill can support income and deliberate activity.
Part of Fortune in Virgo→Part of Fortune in Libra
A Libra Fortune favors gains through Venusian agreements when its ruler is strong. Schulman’s modern reading asks for an unusually deep release of desire.
Part of Fortune in Libra→Part of Fortune in Scorpio
Mars rules a Scorpio Fortune with the power to defend possessions or lose them in conflict. Schulman adds sexuality and the satisfaction of dismantling.
Part of Fortune in Scorpio→Part of Fortune in Sagittarius
A Sagittarius Fortune has Jupiter’s promise of income and rank. A weak ruler can receive the means to provide from a stronger planet that rules it.
Part of Fortune in Sagittarius→Part of Fortune in Capricorn
A Capricorn Fortune gives Saturn a say in property and livelihood. Strong placements favor durable gains; Schulman’s modern account expects happiness late.
Part of Fortune in Capricorn→Part of Fortune in Aquarius
Valens’s Aquarius Fortune example combines Saturn with the Lot and the Sun at its tenth place. The result is a strong traditional judgment of rank.
Part of Fortune in Aquarius→Part of Fortune in Pisces
Jupiter rules a Pisces Fortune through provision and patronage. Valens’s example shows a weak-by-sign ruler gaining force at the natal Midheaven.
Part of Fortune in Pisces→Part of Fortune in the Houses
Select a whole sign house for the area of life emphasized by the placement.
Part of Fortune in the 1st House
A first-house Fortune joins livelihood to the body. Valens judges its ruler at the Ascendant favorably, with the planet shaping the kind of success.
Part of Fortune in the 1st House→Part of Fortune in the 2nd House
Money is central with Fortune in the second, but Valens gives this place a harsh judgment. Its ruler and the tenth from Fortune show how income can hold.
Part of Fortune in the 2nd House→Part of Fortune in the 3rd House
The third-house Fortune has a religious history. Valens links a strong ruler here with wealth and authority, especially Venus in a night chart.
Part of Fortune in the 3rd House→Part of Fortune in the 4th House
Fortune in the fourth makes property and inheritance consequential. Valens also connects its benefic rulers here with a living earned in temples.
Part of Fortune in the 4th House→Part of Fortune in the 5th House
Valens gives Fortune’s rulers in the fifth strong prospects for wealth and honor. Venus favors prosperity; Saturn can signify estates and herds.
Part of Fortune in the 5th House→Part of Fortune in the 6th House
Bad Fortune is a difficult place for livelihood. A sixth-house Lot points toward burdens on the body and money, with its ruler determining relief.
Part of Fortune in the 6th House→Part of Fortune in the 7th House
The seventh-house Fortune has a strong setting but mixed outcomes. Valens’s benefic rulers here favor acquisition and prosperity later in life.
Part of Fortune in the 7th House→Part of Fortune in the 8th House
Valens judges Fortune in the eighth harshly when malefics rule it there. A strong ruler can help livelihood, while the eighth from Fortune concerns death.
Part of Fortune in the 8th House→Part of Fortune in the 9th House
A ninth-house Fortune can connect livelihood with sacred knowledge or foreign journeys. Its benefic rulers have a favorable judgment in Valens.
Part of Fortune in the 9th House→Part of Fortune in the 10th House
Fortune in the tenth gives livelihood a prominent setting. Valens favors capable rulers here, while planets angular from Fortune add another judgment.
Part of Fortune in the 10th House→Part of Fortune in the 11th House
Good Spirit favors an eleventh-house Fortune. Valens links a strong Jupiter ruling the Lot here with wealth, while patrons can help the livelihood.
Part of Fortune in the 11th House→Part of Fortune in the 12th House
Fortune in the twelfth receives a severe judgment in Valens. His own example also shows how a strong ruler elsewhere can bring advancement later.
Part of Fortune in the 12th House→The ruler supplies the means of life
The sign pages draw their planetary significations from Valens's Book I, chapter 1. A ruler's nature gives the livelihood its particular character: Mars can earn through work with iron, while Venus can earn through jewelry or favorable agreements.[2]
A ruler well placed by sign and house, with benefic assistance and a connection to Fortune, is a strong testimony for livelihood. A debilitated ruler in a difficult place usually has less to give. The planets occupying Fortune's sign also matter: benefics tend to improve its affairs, while malefics tend to make them harder.[4] Sect qualifies these judgments, so Mars generally behaves better at night and Saturn by day.[3]
Aversion means that two signs have no traditional whole-sign aspect. The second, sixth, eighth, and twelfth signs from Fortune are averse to it; a ruler there has no line of sight to the Lot. Its ability to act in its own place can remain strong while its ability to deliver to Fortune is impaired.[3] The traditional rulers used here are Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius, and Jupiter for Pisces. Outer planets can add a modern interpretation alongside that older chain of rulership.
Count the angles from Fortune
Treat Fortune's sign as the first place and count forward through the zodiac. The first, fourth, seventh, and tenth signs form its angles, also called stakes. Each set shares a modality. The cardinal cross is Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn; the fixed cross is Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius; the mutable or double-bodied cross is Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Planets in Fortune's cross can strongly affect its affairs. Obert gives particular weight to their condition, as well as to a planet closely conjunct the Lot itself.[3]
The ruler's place counted from Fortune can describe the route of livelihood. Angularity from Fortune can also support rank even when a planet is less prominent from the natal Ascendant. In Valens's examples, planets at the tenth from Fortune repeatedly accompany advancement to office. He also assesses triplicity rulers, the planets governing groups of zodiac signs, when weighing a life's rise or decline.[2] The eleventh from Fortune is the Place of Acquisition; benefics there or configured to it favor property and goods. The eighth from Fortune is the place Valens uses when examining the manner of death.[4]
Fortune and Spirit belong in the same reading
Fortune's bodily topics sit alongside Spirit's topics of soul and intellect. Spirit also describes deliberate action through speech and exchange.[1][4]Their formulas place them at equal distances on either side of the Ascendant, which lies at their midpoint. When one planet rules both Lots, its condition ties bodily livelihood closely to the person's deliberate activity.[3]
The house pages use the natal Ascendant
The house judgments draw on the natal-place chapters of Valens's Book II, where he delineates Fortune and its rulers in the twelve natal places.[2]The twelve house pages count whole-sign houses from the rising sign. A place counted from Fortune starts from Fortune's sign, so its number can differ from the natal house number. A planetary joy is another association: Venus rejoices in the fifth house, for example, while the planet ruling Fortune there is determined by its zodiac sign.[4]
Whole-sign house placement describes a sign-wide area of the chart. An exact conjunction to the Ascendant or another angle requires matching degrees within the orb used for that reading. Quadrant houses can assign the same Fortune longitude to a different house. Reliable birth time matters to both the Ascendant and the day or night formula, especially near sunrise or sunset.
These pages describe natal tendencies. Dated judgments require a timing method and the rest of the chart. In zodiacal releasing, releasing from Fortune is traditionally used for bodily periods. When releasing from Spirit, activation of Fortune's angular signs tends to mark greater activity and eminence.[4]
