Skill has to survive the transaction
Accounting and systematic reasoning are Mercury’s traditional work, along with measuring and testing coinage.[1] These are precise skills with a public consequence. With a Virgo Fortune, a well-placed Mercury favors the person trusted to establish what a thing weighs or what a sum is worth.
An assayer who identifies adulterated silver can protect a buyer’s money and earn a reputation for reliable work. A damaged Mercury gives the darker version of the same trade, where skill serves deception and the worker’s own reputation becomes part of the loss. Mercury signifies gain through skill and gain through sleight of hand.[1]
One Mercury can rule both livelihood and deliberate work
When Fortune is in Virgo and Spirit is in Gemini, Mercury rules both Lots. Obert gives increased importance to a planet with that double responsibility.[2] The exact work that feeds the body can also be the activity through which the person exercises judgment. A strong Mercury can sustain an occupation whose daily tasks agree with its purpose.
The assayer’s judgment then carries both consequences: a sound test earns the fee and expresses the skill the person means to practice. An impaired Mercury can compromise both at once. Poor measurement puts the income at risk, while dishonesty damages the work itself.
