What is the Lot of Spirit?

The Lot of Spirit (also called the Part of Spirit or Lot of Daemon) is a calculated point in your birth chart that represents willpower, conscious choice, and purpose. It is the complement of the Lot of Fortune: where Fortune shows what life hands you, Spirit shows what you do with it. Fortune is circumstance; Spirit is agency.

In Hellenistic astrology, Fortune was associated with the body and the Moon, while Spirit was associated with the mind and the Sun.[2] Vettius Valens used releasing from Spirit specifically for questions about career, rank, and purposeful action.[1] Knowing your Lot of Spirit sign and house tells you how and where your sense of purpose naturally expresses itself. Read the full Lot of Spirit guide for deeper sign-by-sign and house-by-house interpretations.

How the calculator works

The Lot of Spirit formula depends on whether you were born during the day or at night, something your birth chart reveals. For day charts (Sun above the horizon): Ascendant + Sun - Moon. For night charts (Sun below the horizon): Ascendant + Moon - Sun. This is the reverse of the Lot of Fortune formula, which swaps the Sun and Moon positions.

The calculator determines day or night automatically by checking whether the Sun was above or below the horizon at your birth time and location. It then applies the correct formula and places the result in the zodiac, giving you both the sign and house where your Lot of Spirit falls.

Planetary periods used in zodiacal releasing from Spirit

When you release from the Lot of Spirit to track career and purpose timing, each sign chapter's length is set by its ruling planet's “minor years” from Hellenistic practice. These are the seven durations the technique cycles through.

PlanetMinor years
Saturn30
Moon25
Mercury20
Sun19
Mars15
Jupiter12
Venus8

When a period reaches an angle from the Lot of Spirit (1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th sign), it becomes a peak period, the stretches astrologers associate with visible career milestones. Run the full chapter sequence from the zodiacal releasing calculator.

Understanding your result

The sign your Lot of Spirit occupies describes the style in which you exercise willpower and pursue purpose. A Spirit in Aries acts on instinct and initiative; a Spirit in Capricorn builds through discipline and long-term planning. The sign is about how you push forward.

The house your Lot of Spirit occupies shows where in life that purposeful energy concentrates. Spirit in the 10th house channels will through career and public reputation; Spirit in the 4th house directs it toward home, family, and private foundations. A worked example

Take the same birth data computed two ways. Ascendant at 10° Aries (010° absolute longitude), Sun at 20° Taurus (050°), Moon at 5° Gemini (065°). The Spirit formula swaps by sect.

If born during the day (Sun above the horizon): Ascendant + Sun − Moon = 010 + 050 − 065 = −5°, which normalises to 355°: 25° Pisces. Spirit lands in Pisces.

If born at night(Sun below the horizon): Ascendant + Moon − Sun = 010 + 065 − 050 = 25°: 25° Aries. Spirit lands in Aries.

Same three points, opposite signs. That is the sect reversal. Fortune and Spirit swap the Sun and Moon terms by sect, which is why a ten-minute error that puts the Sun on the wrong side of the horizon shifts both lots by up to a full sign. Exact birth time matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Lot of Spirit in astrology?

The Lot of Spirit (also called Part of Spirit or Lot of Daemon) is a calculated point in your birth chart that shows where your willpower, conscious choices, and sense of purpose find their outlet. It complements the Lot of Fortune: Fortune represents circumstances and fate, while Spirit represents agency and what you do with those circumstances.

How is the Lot of Spirit calculated?

The formula depends on whether you were born during the day or night. For day charts: Ascendant + Sun - Moon. For night charts: Ascendant + Moon - Sun. This is the reverse of the Lot of Fortune formula. The day/night distinction is determined by whether the Sun is above or below the horizon at birth.

What is the difference between Lot of Spirit and Lot of Fortune?

The Lot of Fortune governs circumstances, the body, health, and material conditions — what life hands you. The Lot of Spirit governs the mind, willpower, career actions, and conscious decisions — what you choose to do with it. Fortune is the hand you are dealt; Spirit is how you play it. In Hellenistic astrology, Fortune was linked to the Moon and body, Spirit to the Sun and mind.

Do I need an exact birth time for the Lot of Spirit?

Yes. The Lot of Spirit formula requires the Ascendant, which changes sign roughly every two hours. Even a small error in birth time can shift the Ascendant and the resulting Lot to a different sign and house, producing unreliable results.

What does my Lot of Spirit sign mean?

The sign your Lot of Spirit occupies describes the style and approach through which you exercise willpower and pursue purpose. For example, Lot of Spirit in Capricorn suggests purpose is expressed through discipline, long-term planning, and institutional structures, while Spirit in Sagittarius channels will through exploration, teaching, and expanding horizons.

How is the Lot of Spirit used in zodiacal releasing?

Zodiacal releasing can be calculated from the Lot of Spirit instead of (or alongside) the Lot of Fortune. When released from Spirit, the resulting periods track career timing, purpose, and conscious direction rather than bodily and material circumstances. Vettius Valens specifically recommended releasing from Spirit for questions about employment and rank.

Methodology: The Lot of Spirit is computed from NASA’s ANISE ephemeris toolkit. Day or night sect is determined by whether the Sun is above or below the local horizon at the exact birth moment. The lot’s zodiac sign follows the Hellenistic Valens/Paulus formula directly and is house-system independent. House placement for the lot is read from Placidus cusps to match the rest of the natal output; many Hellenistic practitioners prefer whole-sign, and the sign the lot falls in is the same either way.

Edge case: Births within a few minutes of sunrise or sunset sit on the sect boundary, where a small birth-time error can flip the chart from day to night and reverse the lot. Approximate birth times cannot reliably resolve sect in that window. For borderline cases, consider rectifying your birth time before relying on the result.
