The Lot of Necessity is one of the seven Hermetic lots in Hellenistic astrology. Paulus connects this Mercury-keyed lot with necessity, binding circumstances, and difficult agreements. Modern readers often expand that into the area of life where duty, obligation, and constraint press most clearly. It is calculated from Mercury and the Lot of Fortune, so the reading combines Mercury's rational and contractual themes with Fortune's material circumstances.

The primary result follows Paulus: Ascendant + Fortune − Mercury by day, reversed at night. Valens's Lot of Necessity appears as a secondary result: Ascendant + Fortune − Spirit by day, reversed at night. Each lineage uses its own arc, projected from the Ascendant.

In Greek philosophy, ananke (necessity) was the force that even the gods could not override. The Lot of Necessity borrows that name, but a natal lot is still one testimony inside a chart, not a verdict that obligations cannot change. Read it as a pressure point, then compare it with the ruler, house, and mitigating testimony.

A useful modern reading compares Necessity with the Lot of Spirit because Spirit describes chosen action while Necessity describes constraint and obligation. Together they can describe the tension between agency and what a situation asks from you.

Mercury's role in the formula is significant. Mercury is the planet of rationality, communication, and the practical mind. Necessity mediated through Mercury suggests that duty is not only blind force. It is something you may be able to understand, articulate, negotiate, and work with.

Because the Lot of Necessity formula uses the Lot of Fortune, Necessity is directly tied to your material circumstances. Fortune describes what happens to the body and livelihood; Necessity describes the constraints, debts, duties, or agreements that may gather around those circumstances.

Necessity also pairs with the Lot of Courage (the Mars lot of boldness and initiative). Courage describes where Mars-like initiative enters the picture; Necessity describes where Mercury-like obligation and constraint need to be read.
