What is the Lot of Substance?

The Lot of Substance is one of the topical lots in Hellenistic astrology, the calculated points (you will also see them called Arabic Parts) that locate a specific life theme by measuring the distance between two planets and casting it from the Ascendant. The Part of Fortune covers the body and the broad sweep of material life. Substance narrows the focus to livelihood: the resource you acquire through your own engine and hold onto.

The two planets it uses tell you what it is about. Jupiter is increase, the benefic of more, gain and surplus and generosity. Mars is what gets spent, cut, risked, and burned. The lot sits in the relationship between them. Read its sign and you learn the manner of your earning. Read its house and you learn the part of life that funds you.

This is older than the modern money-house shorthand, and it reads differently. The 2nd house is a place. The Lot of Substance is a moving point that can land anywhere in the chart, which is why two people with an empty 2nd house can still have very different relationships to resource.

How the Lot of Substance is Calculated

The formula flips by sect, so the first thing to know is whether the Sun was above the horizon at birth (a day chart) or below it (a night chart).

Day chart (Sun above the horizon): ASC + Jupiter − Mars
Night chart (Sun below the horizon): ASC + Mars − Jupiter

Convert the Ascendant, Jupiter, and Mars to absolute degrees from 0° Aries, then apply the rule for your sect. A worked example: a day birth with Ascendant 9° Leo (129°), Jupiter 15° Gemini (75°), and Mars 20° Aries (20°) gives 129 plus 75 minus 20, which is 184°, or 4° Libra. Take the same positions at night and the formula reverses to 129 plus 20 minus 75, which is 74°, or 14° Gemini. Same planets, different sect, a completely different lot.

That is why the calculator needs an exact birth time and place: without an accurate Ascendant and a known sect, the point cannot be fixed. If your time is uncertain, run a birth time rectification before treating the result as settled. Augurine computes this on its Rust engine against JPL ephemeris positions, the same source behind every chart on the site.

Lot of Substance vs Part of Fortune and the Lot of Assets

Three points get called substance or treated as the money lot, and the confusion is fair, because the tradition itself overlaps them.

The Part of Fortune is Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun by day. It is the broadest of the three, the body and the material circumstance that arrives without effort. Some older translations even call Fortune the lot of livelihood, which is where the name collision starts.

The Lot of Assets reads that same Fortune point through a money lens. Same math as Fortune, narrower question: where wealth and possessions cluster.

The Lot of Substance, this page, uses different planets entirely, Jupiter and Mars in place of the Sun and Moon. It reads the acquisitive engine: how you generate resource through your own effort and expansion, and where that resource goes. A rule of thumb: Fortune and Assets answer what material circumstance you have, and Substance answers how you make and hold it.

Why the Formula Uses Jupiter and Mars

Most lots that touch money lean on the Sun, Moon, or Fortune. Substance reaches for Jupiter and Mars instead, and that choice is the whole interpretation.

Jupiter is the greater benefic, the principle of increase: gain, surplus, the deal that grows, the generosity that comes from having enough. Mars is exertion and expenditure, what you spend to get something, the risk you take, the cut you absorb. Livelihood lives in the tension between those two. You earn by some mixture of expansion and effort, and you keep or lose it by how that balance falls.

By day Jupiter leads the measurement, so the lot reads increase first, with expenditure as the counterweight. By night the sect flips and Mars leads, putting effort and outlay in front. A night-chart Lot of Substance often describes resource that is hard-won and actively managed, where a day-chart version can describe gain that compounds with less friction. The sign and house then fill in the detail.

Activating Your Lot of Substance

A lot is a fixed point in the natal chart until something lights it up. When Jupiter, Saturn, or the year's profected ruler crosses the degree of your Substance lot, the livelihood theme moves to the foreground, sometimes as an opening, sometimes as a squeeze.

Annual profections hand the year to a house and its ruler, and when the profection turns to the house holding your Substance lot, money tends to become the year's storyline. Zodiacal releasing can be run from the Lot of Substance itself, not only from Fortune and Spirit, which gives you chapters of material expansion and contraction across a life. Follow those activations on the Lot Activation Map, and for the sibling Jupiter lot of triumph and reward, see the Lot of Victory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Lot of Substance in astrology?

It is a Hellenistic calculated point that describes how you acquire and hold material livelihood. Built from Jupiter (increase) and Mars (expenditure) and cast from the Ascendant, it shows the manner of your earning by sign and the life area that funds you by house. It is one of the topical lots, also called Arabic Parts.

Is the Lot of Substance the same as the Part of Fortune?

No, though the names overlap in older texts. The Part of Fortune uses the Sun and Moon and describes the body and your broad material circumstance. The Lot of Substance uses Jupiter and Mars and describes the working engine of livelihood: how you generate resource and where it goes. They often point to different signs and houses.

How do you calculate the Lot of Substance?

Convert the Ascendant, Jupiter, and Mars to absolute degrees. For a day chart, Ascendant plus Jupiter minus Mars. For a night chart, Ascendant plus Mars minus Jupiter. Normalize the result into the 0 to 360 range and convert back to sign and degree. The calculator above does this against JPL ephemeris positions.

What does the Lot of Substance say about money?

The sign shows your style of acquiring and holding resource, for example Taurus keeps and Gemini diversifies. The house shows where livelihood concentrates, for example the 10th earns through career and the 6th through daily work. It describes pattern and tendency in how you build material life, not a fixed amount or a guaranteed outcome.

Do you need a birth time for the Lot of Substance?

Yes, ideally. The formula depends on the Ascendant and on sect (day or night), and both require an accurate birth time and place. Without a time you can sometimes estimate the sign if the planets are slow-moving that day, but the house stays unknown and the sect can flip the whole result.

What is the difference between the Lot of Substance and the Lot of Assets?

On Augurine the Lot of Assets reads the Part of Fortune through a money lens, so it shares Fortune's Sun and Moon math. The Lot of Substance uses Jupiter and Mars instead and speaks to a different question: how you earn and spend, the active engine behind the circumstance. Run both to see where they agree and where they pull apart.
