What is the Lot of Courage?

The Lot of Courage is one of the seven Hermetic lots in Hellenistic astrology. In Paulus's listing, Courage is the Mars-keyed lot, so it is read through Mars topics: courage, strength, conflict, force, and the capacity to act under pressure. It is calculated from Mars and the Lot of Fortune, which ties the reading to embodied circumstance as well as initiative.

Unlike the Lot of Victory (which shows where you succeed), Courage shows where you dare: the area of life where you are willing to risk, fight, and push through resistance regardless of whether success follows.

Courage as a Mars Virtue in Hellenistic Astrology

In the Hellenistic tradition, Mars was not simply the planet of aggression. It was the planet of courage, the capacity to endure danger and act under threat. The Greek concept of andreia (courage) was one of the four cardinal virtues, and the Lot of Courage maps where that virtue expresses in your chart.

Mars in the formula connects Courage to physical vitality, competitive instinct, and the willingness to confront what others avoid. The sign your Lot of Courage occupies describes the style of your bravery: whether it is impulsive (Aries), enduring (Taurus), intellectual (Gemini), or expressed in another mode entirely.

Courage and Fortune: The Mars-Fortune Link

Because the Lot of Courage formula uses the Lot of Fortune, Courage is tied to your material circumstances. Fortune describes the hand life deals you; Courage describes where Mars-like initiative, force, or fortitude enters that story. Together they give context for how pressure and action interact.

Courage is often compared with the Lot of Necessity (the Mercury lot of duty and obligation). Necessity and Courage can be compared as a modern interpretive pair: one Mercury-keyed, one Mars-keyed, both derived through Fortune in this calculator's tradition. Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Lot of Courage calculated?

The Lot of Courage formula uses the Ascendant, Mars, and the Lot of Fortune. For day charts (Sun above the horizon): Ascendant + Fortune - Mars. For night charts: Ascendant + Mars - Fortune. This links boldness (Courage) to both material circumstances (Fortune) and the planet of action and assertion (Mars).

What is the difference between the Lot of Courage and the Lot of Necessity?

Necessity is Mercury-keyed and describes constraint, obligation, agreements, and binding circumstances. Courage is Mars-keyed and describes courage, initiative, conflict, and the fortitude to act under pressure.

What does 'courage' mean in Hellenistic astrology?

Courage is the Mars-keyed lot in the Hermetic lot sequence. It can be read through Mars topics such as courage, force, conflict, contest, and fortitude. The sign and house describe the style and arena of that testimony, while Mars and the lot's ruler show how strongly it can operate.

Is the Lot of Courage stronger in Mars-ruled signs?

A Mars-ruled sign can make the symbolism easier to read because the lot's topic and sign ruler match. That does not automatically make the lot stronger. Strength depends on Mars, the ruler of the lot's sign, house placement, sect, aspects, and the rest of the chart.

Why does the Lot of Courage use Mars?

Mars is the planet of action, assertion, combat, and physical vitality in Hellenistic astrology. The Lot of Courage combines Mars with Fortune, connecting courage and conflict themes to embodied circumstance. Read it alongside Mars, the lot's ruler, and the relevant house.
