What is the Lot of Exaltation?

The Lot of Exaltation is a calculated point used as a traditional indicator of elevation, recognition, and public regard. It can highlight chart topics an astrologer might inspect when judging eminence, but it does not guarantee fame, rank, or social mobility by itself. This calculator uses the common fixed-degree Sun/Moon version preserved in the traditional lots material.

Unlike most Arabic lots, the Lot of Exaltation does not use two planetary positions in its formula. Instead, it uses a fixed exaltation degreecombined with the sect luminary (Sun for day charts, Moon for night charts) and the Ascendant. This makes it structurally unique among the lots and ties it directly to the concept of planetary exaltation: the zodiacal degree associated with a planet's essential dignity in the traditional scheme.

The Exaltation Degrees: A Unique Formula

In traditional astrology, each of the seven visible planets has a specific degree where it reaches its highest expression of power. These are the classical exaltation degrees:

PlanetExaltation Degree
Sun19° Aries
Moon3° Taurus
Mercury15° Virgo
Venus27° Pisces
Mars28° Capricorn
Jupiter15° Cancer
Saturn21° Libra

The Lot of Exaltation uses only the Sun's and Moon's exaltation degrees because the formula is sect-based. For day charts (Sun above the horizon), the formula is: Ascendant + 19° Aries − Sun. For night charts: Ascendant + 3° Taurus − Moon. The other five planetary exaltation degrees are not used in this lot, though they inform many other techniques in traditional astrology.

Exaltation, Eminence, and the Midheaven

The Lot of Exaltation and the Midheaven (MC) both relate to public standing, but they measure different dimensions of it. The Midheaven describes your career trajectory, professional reputation, and the authority you wield through your vocation. It is a structural point defined by the highest degree of the ecliptic at the moment of birth, and it speaks to the work you do in the world.

The Lot of Exaltation, by contrast, is read as a more specific elevation or recognition indicator. A strong Midheaven can describe visible career testimony; a prominent Lot of Exaltation can add another testimony about public regard. Neither point should be read alone as a promise of fame.

When the Lot of Exaltation falls in the 10th house or shares a sign with the MC ruler, career and recognition topics can be read together. When they occupy different parts of the chart, the recognition topic may point somewhere other than a job title. Studying both points together gives more context than either point can provide alone. Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Lot of Exaltation formula different from other Arabic lots?

Most Arabic lots combine two planetary positions with the Ascendant. The Lot of Exaltation is unique because it uses a fixed exaltation degree instead of a second planet. For day charts the formula is Ascendant + 19° Aries (Sun's exaltation degree) minus the Sun. For night charts it is Ascendant + 3° Taurus (Moon's exaltation degree) minus the Moon. This fixed-degree approach ties the lot directly to the concept of planetary exaltation rather than to a planetary pair.

How does the Lot of Exaltation differ from the Midheaven?

The Midheaven (MC) describes career trajectory, professional authority, and public role. The Lot of Exaltation is a more specific recognition or eminence indicator. A strong MC can describe visible career testimony; a prominent Lot of Exaltation can add another testimony about public regard. Neither point guarantees fame by itself.

What are the seven planetary exaltation degrees used in traditional astrology?

The classical exaltation degrees are: Sun at 19° Aries, Moon at 3° Taurus, Mercury at 15° Virgo, Venus at 27° Pisces, Mars at 28° Capricorn, Jupiter at 15° Cancer, and Saturn at 21° Libra. The Lot of Exaltation uses only the Sun and Moon exaltation degrees because it is a sect-based calculation that selects the appropriate luminary depending on whether you were born during the day or at night.

Why does the Lot of Exaltation depend on whether the chart is day or night?

Sect (the distinction between day and night charts) is fundamental to Hellenistic astrology. The Sun leads the day sect and the Moon leads the night sect, so the Lot of Exaltation uses the relevant luminary for the chart's sect. Day charts use the Sun and its exaltation at 19° Aries; night charts use the Moon and its exaltation at 3° Taurus.

How do I interpret my Lot of Exaltation results?

Start with the sign, which describes the style of the recognition or elevation topic. Then look at the house, which shows the life area involved. The ruler of the lot's sign, the ruler's condition, and the condition of the sect luminary decide how much weight this testimony deserves in the whole chart.
