What is the Lot of Travel (Part of Foreign Places)?
The Lot of Travel, also called the Lot of Foreign Lands or the Part of Foreign Places, is a calculated point that marks the theme of travel, distance, and foreign lands in a birth chart. By day it sits at the Ascendant plus Mars minus Saturn; by night the two planets swap. Its sign and house show how journeys and far-from-home circumstances run through your life.
Settle one thing first: this is a significator, not a forecast. The Lot of Travel does not tell you that you will emigrate, or when, and no single point can. Read it for the weight and the flavor of your relationship to distance and the foreign and it earns its keep. Treat it as a promise of a move and it turns into superstition. It belongs to the wider family of Arabic parts (lots), sensitive points derived from three positions in the chart, and you can compute it next to the rest with the Arabic Parts Calculator.
How the Lot of Travel is calculated
The formula is short, and the order of the planets matters. In a day chart you take the Ascendant, add Mars, and subtract Saturn. In a night chart you reverse the two planets to the Ascendant plus Saturn minus Mars. The result is a single degree of the zodiac that lands in one sign and one house.
Why those two planets. Mars drives the going: the push to set out, the exertion, the risk that travel carried in the ancient world. Saturn is the far edge: distance, boundaries, and the foreign, a long way from where you began. The lot reads the space between the planet that moves you and the planet of the far place, between leaving and arriving. The day and night switch carries meaning too. With Mars leading by day the journey tilts toward something you reach for, the trip taken; with Saturn leading by night it tilts toward distance imposed, the going that was not entirely your idea. Vettius Valens records this Saturn-and-Mars Lot of Foreign Lands in his Anthology (Book II), attributing it to Abraham, and casts it the same way by day and by night; the day-and-night reversal used here follows the later Olympiodorus and Laurentianus tradition for the same lot. Augurine computes the point in its Rust engine in the same of-date frame and whole-sign houses as the rest of your chart, so it agrees with your other lots rather than drifting from them.
Lot of Travel vs astrocartography
People reach this calculator looking for two different answers, and it helps to know which one you want. The Lot of Travel is a point in your own chart. It tells you how heavily the theme of journeys and foreign places weighs in your life, and through which house and sign that weight expresses. It is about meaning and emphasis, and it does not name a place on Earth.
Astrocartography does the opposite. It takes your whole chart and projects it onto the world map, drawing the lines where each planet localizes, so it can point you at actual coordinates. That is the tool for the question of where, when you are choosing somewhere to live, work, or fall in love. Read together they make a fuller picture: the lot tells you that distance matters to you and in what flavor, and the map shows you the longitudes where it lands.
Other travel lots in the tradition
If you have run a travel lot elsewhere and gotten a different degree, the formula is almost certainly the reason. The tradition never settled on a single travel lot. This calculator uses the Lot of Foreign Lands as Vettius Valens gives it, built from Mars and Saturn, which keeps it consistent with how Augurine computes every other lot from primary Hellenistic sources.
The medieval authors offer different points. The Part of Travel by Land is usually given as the Ascendant plus the cusp of the 9th house minus the ruler of the 9th, a house-based construction rather than a planet-based one. The Part of Travel by Water is a separate point again, often anchored on Saturn and a fixed degree of Cancer. Some modern calculators list a Part of Travel built as the Ascendant plus the 9th cusp minus the 7th cusp. None of these are wrong; they are different lots wearing similar names, and they will land on different degrees in the same chart. To see the whole family at once, the Arabic Parts Calculator runs the full set, and the Lot of Spirit and Part of Fortune are the two foundations the rest tend to lean on.
When the Lot of Travel activates
A lot marks where a theme lives; timing techniques tell you when it comes forward. Annual profections hand each year to a house and its ruler, and when a profected year activates the house holding your Lot of Travel, or the planet that rules the lot's sign, the travel theme often moves from background to foreground. Zodiacal releasing does something similar across longer chapters, and transits to the degree of the lot fill in the shorter timing.
For a faster look at which of your lots are lit right now, the Lot Activation Map reads the whole set against the current sky. None of this guarantees a journey. It tells you when the door tends to be open, which is the honest version of what these techniques can do.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Lot of Travel (Part of Travel) in astrology?
The Lot of Travel, also called the Lot of Foreign Lands or Part of Foreign Places, is one of the Hellenistic lots, a calculated point that marks the theme of travel, distance, and foreign lands in a birth chart. It is built from the Ascendant, Mars, and Saturn, and you read it by sign and house. It is a significator of how journeys and far-from-home circumstances run through your life, never a prediction that you will move.
How do you calculate the Part of Travel?
In a day chart you take the Ascendant, add Mars's longitude, and subtract Saturn's. In a night chart you reverse the two planets: Ascendant plus Saturn minus Mars, reduced by 360 if the total runs over. The result is a single zodiacal degree that falls in one sign and one house. An exact birth time is required because the lot depends on the Ascendant. The Saturn-and-Mars Lot of Foreign Lands is recorded by Vettius Valens, who casts it the same day and night; the day-and-night reversal used here follows the later Olympiodorus and Laurentianus tradition. This calculator computes it in whole-sign houses.
What does the Lot of Travel mean in my birth chart?
Read the house first for the area of life the travel theme enters, then the sign for its flavor. A ninth-house lot amplifies the theme into a whole worldview, while a fourth-house lot ties it to family and homeland. Sagittarius leans expatriate; Taurus leans reluctant. The lot shows where distance and the foreign carry weight and in what style, as an available reading rather than a fixed outcome.
Which house rules foreign travel, the ninth, third, or twelfth?
In the Hellenistic system the ninth house is the primary house of long journeys and foreign lands, and the third house covers short and local travel. The twelfth carries older associations with exile and the foreign as a place of retreat, though that reading is heavier in some later traditions than in Hellenistic practice. The Lot of Travel works alongside these houses rather than replacing them, focusing the theme down to a single point you can track.
Is the Lot of Travel the same as astrocartography?
No. The Lot of Travel is a single point in your own chart that measures how much the travel theme weighs and in what way. Astrocartography projects your whole chart onto the world map to show the actual locations where each planet localizes. The lot answers how and how much; astrocartography answers where. They work well together, the lot for emphasis and the map for coordinates.
What is the difference between the travel by land and travel by water lots?
They are separate medieval lots. The Part of Travel by Land is usually given as the Ascendant plus the cusp of the ninth house minus the ruler of the ninth, a house-based construction. The Part of Travel by Water is a different point again, often anchored on Saturn and a fixed degree of Cancer. This calculator uses the planet-based Lot of Foreign Lands from Valens (Mars and Saturn), so its degree will usually differ from either house-based travel lot.
Does the Lot of Travel predict whether I will move abroad?
No. It marks the travel and foreign-places theme as a significator, showing where the theme lives and how strongly, not whether or when you will relocate. Expression depends on timing techniques like profections, zodiacal releasing, and transits activating the lot, and on the rest of the chart. Treat it as a reading of tendency and emphasis, and treat any tool that promises a move on a date as entertainment rather than astrology.
