The Lot of Travel, also called the Lot of Foreign Lands or the Part of Foreign Places, is a calculated point that marks the theme of travel, distance, and foreign lands in a birth chart. By day it sits at the Ascendant plus Mars minus Saturn; by night the two planets swap. Its sign and house show how journeys and far-from-home circumstances run through your life.

Settle one thing first: this is a significator, not a forecast. The Lot of Travel does not tell you that you will emigrate, or when, and no single point can. Read it for the weight and the flavor of your relationship to distance and the foreign and it earns its keep. Treat it as a promise of a move and it turns into superstition. The formula is short, and the order of the planets matters. In a day chart you take the Ascendant, add Mars, and subtract Saturn. In a night chart you reverse the two planets to the Ascendant plus Saturn minus Mars. The result is a single degree of the zodiac that lands in one sign and one house.

Why those two planets. Mars drives the going: the push to set out, the exertion, the risk that travel carried in the ancient world. Saturn is the far edge: distance, boundaries, and the foreign, a long way from where you began. The lot reads the space between the planet that moves you and the planet of the far place, between leaving and arriving. The day and night switch carries meaning too. With Mars leading by day the journey tilts toward something you reach for, the trip taken; with Saturn leading by night it tilts toward distance imposed, the going that was not entirely your idea. Vettius Valens records this Saturn-and-Mars Lot of Foreign Lands in his Anthology (Book II), attributing it to Abraham, and casts it the same way by day and by night; the day-and-night reversal used here follows the later Olympiodorus and Laurentianus tradition for the same lot. People reach this calculator looking for two different answers, and it helps to know which one you want. The Lot of Travel is a point in your own chart. It tells you how heavily the theme of journeys and foreign places weighs in your life, and through which house and sign that weight expresses. It is about meaning and emphasis, and it does not name a place on Earth.

If you have run a travel lot elsewhere and gotten a different degree, the formula is almost certainly the reason. The tradition never settled on a single travel lot. The medieval authors offer different points. The Part of Travel by Land is usually given as the Ascendant plus the cusp of the 9th house minus the ruler of the 9th, a house-based construction rather than a planet-based one. The Part of Travel by Water is a separate point again, often anchored on Saturn and a fixed degree of Cancer. Some modern calculators list a Part of Travel built as the Ascendant plus the 9th cusp minus the 7th cusp. None of these are wrong; they are different lots wearing similar names, and they will land on different degrees in the same chart. A lot marks where a theme lives; timing techniques tell you when it comes forward. Annual profections hand each year to a house and its ruler, and when a profected year activates the house holding your Lot of Travel, or the planet that rules the lot's sign, the travel theme often moves from background to foreground.
