Saturn Return Calculator: When Is My Saturn Return?

The first exact pass most often lands between ages 28 and 30, the second in the late fifties, and the third in the late eighties. The calculator above is free. Enter one birth date above to get the exact date and age of every pass in your own Saturn cycle.

People born in the same year can receive different dates because natal Saturn occupied different degrees on their birthdays. Retrograde motion can also bring Saturn across one natal degree more than once. A personal timeline therefore answers both “when is my Saturn return?” and “when was my Saturn return?” more accurately than an age estimate alone.

Astrology books do not settle on one universal age. They mix a planet’s orbital period with the timing of an exact contact and with wider descriptions of a life stage. The table shows the spread.

Brennan’s figure describes the modern exact-degree return. Riske, Bogart, Jones, Arroyo, Hand, Brady, and Forrest use somewhat different clocks or ranges. This calculator reports the exact-contact clock. Its dates follow the moment transiting Saturn reaches the natal longitude instead of a fixed birthday.

In this calculator’s sample of 1,752 birth dates, every exact second-return pass fell between ages 58.2 and 59.7 and every exact first-return pass between 28.4 and 29.9. The lower ends of the published second-return ranges therefore describe the approach to the return rather than an exact pass.

A Saturn return is the conjunction of transiting Saturn with the ecliptic longitude Saturn held at birth. Riske defines a return chart from the moment a transiting planet returns to its natal position. Brennan identifies the exact natal degree as the usual modern starting point for the Saturn return.[2][1]

One return can contain several exact dates. Forrest says retrogradation produces three exact conjunctions more often than not, all within less than a year. Brady measures a repeated transit from its first exact touch through its last exact touch. She treats the touches as climaxes that mark distinct phases.[10][8] The timeline groups those crossings and numbers the passes so the direct and retrograde contacts remain part of one event.

Saturn’s orbit is close to 29 and a half years.[9][10] Brady gives about 29 years for one trip through the chart and an average motion of about 12 degrees per year.[8] The return is one of four quarter points in the repeating cycle. Brady places waxing squares near ages 7, 36, and 65, oppositions near 14, 43, and 72, then waning squares near 21, 50, and 79.[8] The calculator lists every exact return, square, and opposition from birth through roughly age 100. The answer depends on which timing layer you are asking about. These three layers measure different boundaries around the same return.

A sign-based Hellenistic approach starts earlier and ends later. Brennan gives the example of natal Saturn at 15° Libra. The transit begins when Saturn enters 0° Libra and ends after its final departure from 29° Libra, while the 15° contact remains the exact return inside that sign passage.[1]

Arroyo describes an experiential transition of two to two and a half years surrounding the return date.[5]Forrest calls the event “that year or so” and says it sets the tone for what follows.[9]Greene writes that the year immediately before is often a period of gradual breaking down. She also states plainly that it need not be so and ties her reading to the person’s response.[11]

This calculator shows every exact pass and an active window extending 5 degrees on either side of each exact pass. That five-degree window is this calculator’s convention, and astrologers do not share a single five-degree rule.

Across these accounts, the first return tests arrangements built through the twenties, while Hand and Arroyo make its felt difficulty conditional on what those years established.[7][5] The second reads here as a decision point around security and authority. The third has the thinnest treatment in these accounts.[6][3][9]

The first Saturn return

Hand and Arroyo both make the first return conditional. Hand calls it a period of crisis when a life has been built around activities that are inappropriate for the person, and a time of solidification when earlier work has been sound.[7] Arroyo says the quality of the experience depends entirely on how the previous 29 years have been lived.[5] He considers the return a bit overemphasized, though it often marks what he calls destiny taking form and may feel liberating.[6]

Forrest writes that calling the first return a crisis “over-dramatizes it, but it definitely gets your attention.” He says a manager may offer first-name terms or a parent may ask for advice. A younger stranger may say sir or ma’am. He says people often commit to a relationship or a career path at this passage, and that having children is common. Elsewhere he calls the first return an initiation into life’s long middle.[9]

Greene records marriages ending and marriages being made under the return. She says a marriage made then is not necessarily wrong, and she cautions that the return does not always concern marriage. Its relevance depends on Saturn’s position in the birth chart.[11]Jones says choices begin to be limited as opportunities solidify. Using Jung’s terms, he reads the return as an encounter between the youthful puer and the older senex.[4] Before turning to planetary cycles, Brady closes her keyword sketches by calling them guidelines rather than final statements. In her Saturn return section, she opens with the fairy-story promise of living happily ever after, then treats the return as a review of that expectation.[8]

The second Saturn return

Bogart places the second return between 56 and 60. He calls it potentially a time of productivity and creativity. Some people encounter greater authority, while others become more conscious of fatigue and limits.[3] Arroyo writes that the Saturn returns he has seen are almost always decision times, and his second-return example concerns a practical decision about work and future security.[6]

Forrest says that people psychically “turn sixty” at 59, while also calling the return merely a marker for a process that cannot happen on one day.[9] Riske reports that many people begin thinking about retirement and reconsider which priorities deserve their time.[2]

The third Saturn return

Forrest places the third return in the eighty-ninth year. “Death is the true teacher here.”[9] Bogart gives ages 88 to 90 and says people who reach it have the potential to become wise elders.[3]Bogart puts the limit plainly: “I don’t know the future.”[3]

The modern Saturn return belongs to the twentieth-century meeting of astrology and psychological accounts of adult development. James Holden identifies Dane Rudhyar, 1895 to 1985, as a promoter of what Rudhyar called humanistic astrology. Holden dates Astrology of Personality to 1936 and the six-volume Humanistic Astrology series to 1970 and 1971.[12]

Dane Rudhyar, as quoted by Greg Bogart in Planets in Therapy, organized an 84-year pattern into three periods of 28 years. He called the passages around 28 and 56 two great turning points, framed as second and third births. For ages 27 to 30 he brought together the lunar nodes and the changing Jupiter and Saturn relationship. He also included the progressed Moon and Saturn’s return to its natal place.[3]

Stephen Arroyo says the psychological perspective was initiated by Dane Rudhyar and Marc Edmund Jones. He describes his own route as a deep immersion in C. G. Jung followed by Rudhyar’s work.[5]Mark Jones, citing an earlier account by Rose, traces a therapeutically focused astrology to the 1930s. Jones also records Rudhyar’s meeting with Roberto Assagioli, whose Psychosynthesis joined depth psychology with spiritual concerns.[4]

The astrologers then compare their cycle language with developmental psychology. Daniel Levinson’s The Seasons of a Man’s Lifenames the Age Thirty Transition and a later settling down period. Bogart and Jones both draw the comparison to Saturn’s cycle.[3][4]Erik Erikson’s “generativity versus stagnation” is another developmental psychology model named by Bogart for middle adulthood.[3] The Age Thirty Transition and generativity come from developmental psychology; their connection to planetary timing is the astrologers’ comparison.

John Townley connects planetary cycles with the life-crisis periods popularized by Gail Sheehy in Passages. Townley describes Saturn’s 29 and a half year cycle through stress, testing, and forced economy, while calling it the most securing and strengthening cycle when put to proper use.[13]

In a 1987 seminar published with Liz Greene, Howard Sasportas joked that “Everybody knows about the Saturn return now” and imagined greeting cards for it.[14] Forrest later wrote that Saturn returns had entered popular parlance, tied especially to the social meaning of turning 30 and 60.[9]Benjamin Dykes supplies a useful outside view: the modern meaning of Saturn returns “depends largely upon a psychodynamic understanding of astrology.”[15]

Older astrology has Saturn’s period numbers, each tied to its own timing procedures and conditions, along with schemes for stages of life. It does not supply the modern doctrine of a natal Saturn conjunction as a passage in the late twenties. Abu Ma’shar lists four classes of planetary years for Saturn: 30 lesser, 43 and a half middle, 57 greater, and 265 mighty years.[16] Firmicus gives Saturn 57 years when favorable as Giver of Life and 30 when unfavorable.[17] Dorotheus gives Saturn a 30-year protective period only when Saturn is in a stake and is the relevant triplicity overlord.[18]

In Book I of the Anthology, Valens tells the reader to divide the years since Augustus by 30 in a rule for calculating Saturn’s position. Mark T. Riley’s translation glosses 30 as Saturn’s synodic period.[19]The thirty-year figure is Saturn’s sidereal period, its return to the same place among the stars, which is the sense Beck gives. Saturn’s synodic period, its return to the same position relative to the Sun as seen from Earth, is about 378 days, so Riley’s label is loose. Demetra George gives 30 minor, 43.5 mean, and 57 greater years. She derives the minor years from synodic recurrence cycles and cautions that a proposed link between the greater years and the Babylonian goal-year periods is speculative.[20]Roger Beck agrees that Saturn’s sidereal period is roughly 30 years, while warning that the planetary period numbers as a set are astronomically meaningless.[21]

Ptolemy’s ages of man form a separate life-stage scheme. He assigns Saturn “old age, the latest period, which lasts for the rest of life.”[22]Joseph Crane’s modern account places that Saturnian age from 69. Crane also explains that planetary numbers reappear in systems where planets serve as time rulers.[23]

Babylonian goal-year astronomy describes an observational recurrence, different from a natal return doctrine, and gives Saturn 59 years. Francesca Rochberg describes it as the earlier period used to recover the reappearance of a desired phenomenon.[24] C. B. F. Walker gives the same 59-year cycle in his study of a Saturn tablet.[25] Hermann Hunger records a six-day correction when comparing goal-year data with modern computations.[26]

The number thirty is ancient; the twenty-ninth-year life passage is modern. The transits by age calculator places Saturn’s cycle beside other major transit cycles.

Start with the exact dates, then place them back into the birth chart. The result shows natal Saturn’s sign and degree. With a birth time and location, it also shows the natal house. These placements provide context for a reading without promising events. Greene says an astrologer considers Saturn’s natal house, sign, and aspects when interpreting the return. Her examples connect the seventh or eighth house with relationships and the tenth with career aims. The ninth can describe a person’s world view.[11]

Natal aspects can change the emphasis. Hand says a natal aspect is of primary importance and can seriously modify a transit.[7] Arroyo says close hard aspects from natal Saturn to personal planets may bring the associated conflicts into sharper focus during the return. He says harmonious natal aspects with the Sun or Moon may correspond with confirming and solidifying what has developed over time.[5]

Traditional condition adds two more considerations. Crane says Saturn in a nocturnal chart is out of sect and may be more malefic, while noting that many other factors must be considered.[23]Avelar and Ribeiro define dignity as support for a planet’s expression and debility as a challenge to it. The standard traditional table places Saturn in domicile in Capricorn and Aquarius, exaltation in Libra, detriment in Cancer and Leo, and fall in Aries. They define detriment as opposite domicile and fall as opposite exaltation. Their example says Saturn’s sobriety and caution can become melancholy and meanness in detriment.[27]

This table shows natal Saturn sign by birth date and the calendar years of the first and second return. It uses this calculator’s engine across 1,752 sampled birth dates from 1936 to 2008, with birth time omitted. A birth on or about a listed sign boundary can fall on either side because the engine used an approximate time. In this sample, exact first return passes appeared from age 28.4 through 29.9, and exact second return passes appeared from age 58.2 through 59.7.

A birth year is only a bracket because Saturn changes sign every two to three years, while retrograde loops can move exact passes by months. The calculator above gives the exact dates for one birth date.

Many people born from 1988 to 1991 have Saturn in Capricorn and reached a first return during the 2017 to 2020 Capricorn transit. Many people born from 1991 to 1994 have Saturn in Aquarius and reached a first return during the 2020 to 2023 Aquarius transit.

Saturn’s longitude comes from the JPL DE440s planetary ephemeris through ANISE, using the Saturn barycenter. Positions use the tropical zodiac referred to the true equinox of date.

The engine scans in 12-hour steps from birth to age 100 or the end of the ephemeris range, whichever comes first. It finds every exact conjunction, square, and opposition to natal Saturn’s longitude. Repeated crossings within 300 days are grouped as passes of one event, with as many as three passes when Saturn stations retrograde over the point. Each event has an active window calculated with a 5 degree orb on either side of exactness.

Birth time is optional. Without it, the engine calculates the natal position at an approximate time and flags the result as approximate. With time and location, it also calculates natal Saturn’s house in Placidus houses, using the same of-date frame as the main chart. Orb practice varies. Brady calls orbs a very personal part of an astrologer’s tool kit and uses 12 minutes of arc in her own transit work. Her rule excludes a near miss that turns retrograde before exactness, while treating a Saturn direct station as the start when Saturn later reaches exactness.[8] Riske uses a one-degree orb for outer transits and allows a slightly wider orb around stations.[2] The five-degree active window here is a display convention around events that the engine confirms by exact contact.

This calculator does not cast a Saturn return chart. A return chart is a separate chart for the moment of the exact return. Riske records continuing debate over whether to cast it for the birth place or current residence. She reports a preference for residence and advises trying both, so the location question remains unresolved here.[2] Brady treats a Saturn return chart as current for about 29 years and widens its aspect orbs to two or three degrees.[8]
