A Jupiter return is the moment transiting Jupiter comes back to the exact degree of your natal Jupiter. It happens every 11 years and 10 months. Most people experience Jupiter returns at ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72. Each return opens a window of 12 to 18 months of expansion, opportunity, and renewed perspective.

You'll see other sources round Jupiter's cycle to “every 12 years.” Close enough for a calendar; off by enough to matter for timing. The actual cycle is 4,332 days, so your second return lands a few months earlier than the birthday you'd expect, and the gap accumulates with each cycle. The return itself is a single moment. The influence runs ahead of it and lingers behind. Six months before, you start sensing what wants to expand. Jupiter goes retrograde for about four months out of every thirteen. When your return date falls near one of those station points, Jupiter crosses your natal position, retrogrades back over it, and then crosses it a third time going direct. That's a triple-pass return.

A single-pass return is one date and one window. A triple-pass return is three dates spread across roughly six to nine months, and each pass has a different texture.

The first pass is the announcement. The new theme arrives, often as an external event: an offer, a meeting, an opportunity that drops in unprompted.

Most astrologers will tell you the 3rd Jupiter return is the heaviest one. It lands around age 36. The reason has less to do with Jupiter and more with what surrounds it.

By 36, you've integrated your Saturn return (28 to 30) and you're working with what it left behind. The early 30s are a settling period: the bargains you made at 29 are now visible. The 3rd Jupiter return arrives into that aftermath. It's the first Jupiter return where you've been adult long enough to know what expansion you actually want, instead of accepting whatever expansion the world hands you.

The dates are identical in both frames. A Jupiter return is a transit-to-natal conjunction in absolute ecliptic longitude, and both natal and transiting Jupiter shift by the same ayanamsha (roughly 24°). What changes is the sign label and the within-sign degree.

In practice, your sidereal Jupiter sign is usually one sign earlier than your tropical sign, because the ~24° offset is just under one sign-width. When natal Jupiter sits in the final six degrees of a tropical sign, the sidereal placement can stay in the same sign.
