A Chiron return happens when transiting Chiron reaches the exact zodiac degree it held when you were born. It takes Chiron roughly 50.7 years to complete one orbit of the Sun, so this return arrives once for most people, somewhere between ages 48 and 52.

Chiron is a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, classified as a centaur. It was discovered in 1977. In astrology, it carries the archetype of the wounded healer: the figure who knows a particular kind of pain from the inside, and whose understanding of that pain makes them useful to others moving through the same terrain.

The return is not a one-day event. It's a window of about twelve to eighteen months, anchored by three exact contacts (more on those below).

Most people get their Chiron return between ages 48 and 52. The variation comes from where your natal Chiron sits in the zodiac, because Chiron's orbit is elliptical: it moves fast through some signs and slowly through others.

When transiting Chiron approaches your natal Chiron degree, here is what usually happens:

1. First contact. Chiron crosses your natal degree moving forward (direct motion).
2. Station retrograde and back-up. Chiron slows, stops, reverses, and recrosses your natal degree moving backward.

Chiron moves slowest through Aries, lingering there for roughly eight years at a stretch, which is why the Aries-Chiron generation is so large and why its returns arrive late in the band, around age 49 to 51. Most people carrying natal Chiron in Aries were born across the late 1960s and 1970s, and the current 2018 to 2027 transit through Aries is walking that whole generation back to its birth degree.

That slow Aries passage is now handing off to Taurus. Across 2026 and 2027 transiting Chiron finishes its years in Aries and crosses into Taurus, so people with natal Chiron in the last degrees of Aries reach their return right as the sign changes. Aries-themed Chiron material tends to circle self-assertion and the right to take up space. The return often surfaces whatever you concluded early about being too much, or about not being allowed to want what you want. None of this is a forecast. It is the territory the symbolism points at.

The three contact dates are reported as UTC dates, which match the local calendar date for almost every user.

Without a recorded birth time, natal Chiron is approximated using noon UTC at your birth place. This produces a one to two degree uncertainty in natal position and a few days of drift in the contact dates. Useful, but the dates are sharper with a recorded birth time.
