What is a Chiron sign?

Your Chiron sign is the zodiac sign Chiron occupied when you were born. Chiron is a small comet-like body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, known in astrology as the wounded healer. The sign describes the texture of an old sore spot, and the kind of hard-won skill that can grow from working with it.

Chiron was found in 1977 by the astronomer Charles Kowal, which makes it a late arrival to the chart next to the classical planets. It carries an odd dual identity. It is catalogued both as minor planet 2060 Chiron and as comet 95P/Chiron, because it shows faint cometary activity that neither category fully covers. Sitting between Saturn, the planet of limits, and Uranus, the planet of sudden change, it is usually read as a bridge between the two.

Here is the part most calculators skip. Chiron by sign and house is a prompt, not a diagnosis. It points at where you are tender, and at where, often because of that tenderness, you have ended up with unusual range. It does not name a trauma or hand you a healing assignment. Read your result the way you would read the Lilith placement, as a question worth sitting with rather than a verdict.

How this Chiron calculator works

Enter your birth date, time, and place. The calculator finds Chiron's exact longitude for that moment and reports four things: the sign, the degree, the house, and whether Chiron was retrograde at your birth.

The reason the exact moment matters comes down to Chiron's orbit, which is steeply eccentric. Chiron moves quickly when it is near the Sun and slowly when it is far out, so it can race through one sign in under two years and then sit in another for close to eight. Near a sign change, the placement is genuinely ambiguous from the date alone, and it gets harder when Chiron is retrograde and crossing back over the boundary it just left. If you have only ever checked a Chiron date table, this is the case those tables handle badly. Your birth time and location pin the exact degree, which is the only dependable way to place Chiron near a cusp.

For the sign by itself, your birth date is usually enough. For the house, and for any birth date close to a sign change, the exact time and place do the work. To see Chiron alongside the rest of your placements, run a full birth chart instead.

Your Chiron sign, house, and aspects

Most Chiron calculators stop at the sign. The sign is the slowest layer, though, and a whole age group shares it, so on its own it says less about you than you would think. The house and the aspects are where the placement gets personal.

The sign is the style of the sore spot: the flavor of the sensitivity, and the kind of skill that tends to build around it. The house is where it actually shows up in a life, the specific arena, and because the house depends on your Ascendant it needs your birth time. The aspects are the other planets drawn into the story. A Chiron held tight to the Sun, the Moon, Saturn, or one of the chart angles reads with far more weight than a Chiron sitting quietly with no close contacts. This calculator shows all three layers, plus the degree, so you can see which part of your chart Chiron is actually talking to.

Is Chiron used in Vedic astrology?

Mostly, no. Classical Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, was worked out long before Chiron was discovered in 1977, and it is built around the visible planets together with the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. The large majority of Vedic astrologers do not use Chiron at all, and a Chiron calculator described as Vedic is usually a Western tool with a sidereal zodiac applied to it.

If you do work in a sidereal frame, this calculator gives you Chiron's sidereal position as well, using the Lahiri ayanamsa. In 2026 that sits roughly 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac, often far enough to move Chiron one sign earlier. If the sidereal frame is what you came for, the sidereal birth chart calculator puts your whole chart in that frame.

The Chiron return: why it is not a fixed age

The Saturn return is tidy. It arrives for almost everyone around age 29, give or take a few months, because Saturn's orbit is fairly regular. People expect the Chiron return to behave the same way. It does not.

Chiron's orbit is eccentric and, over long stretches of time, genuinely unstable, nudged around by the gravity of Saturn and Uranus. Its orbital period is usually written as a range, somewhere near 49 to 51 years, rather than one fixed figure. There is a second reason the age slips. Transiting Chiron almost always stations retrograde close to its natal degree, so the return is not a single date. It lands as a window of two or three exact contacts spread across a year or more.

So when someone asks what age the Chiron return happens, the honest answer is a span, not a birthday. Most people meet it somewhere between roughly 49 and 51. The same eccentric orbit that makes a date table unreliable is the reason the return refuses to settle on a clean number. To see the contrast directly, the Saturn return calculator shows how differently a regular orbit behaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Chiron sign?

Your Chiron sign is the zodiac sign Chiron held at your birth. Chiron is a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977 and read in astrology as the wounded healer. The sign describes the style of an old sore spot and the skill you can build from it. It is a prompt to think with, not a diagnosis.

How do I find my Chiron sign?

Enter your birth date, time, and place above. The calculator computes Chiron's exact longitude for that moment and returns the sign, degree, house, and retrograde status. A printed date table can also give you the sign, but it can place you in the wrong sign near a boundary, which is exactly where a real calculation matters.

Do I need my exact birth time to calculate Chiron?

For the sign alone, usually not. Chiron moves slowly enough that your birth date places it in a sign on most days. Two cases need the exact time: when you were born on a day Chiron changed signs, and whenever you want the house, since the house depends on your Ascendant. For those, an accurate birth time and birth location are required.

Is Chiron a planet?

No. Chiron is a small icy body between Saturn and Uranus, catalogued both as minor planet 2060 Chiron and as comet 95P/Chiron because it shows faint cometary activity. Astrologers use it the way they use other chart points, but it is not one of the traditional planets.

How accurate is this Chiron calculator?

Chiron's longitude is computed for your exact birth moment from the same astronomy engine behind every Augurine chart, so the sign and degree are precise when your birth data is correct. The house is only as accurate as your birth time. If you are unsure of your time, the sign and degree still hold; treat the house as approximate.

Is Chiron used in Vedic astrology?

Generally no. Classical Vedic astrology was set long before Chiron was discovered in 1977, and it centers the visible planets plus the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. Most Vedic astrologers do not use Chiron. If you work in a sidereal frame, this calculator still gives you Chiron's sidereal position using the Lahiri ayanamsa, which sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac in 2026.

What is a Chiron return?

A Chiron return is the point when transiting Chiron comes back to where it sat in your birth chart. Unlike the Saturn return, which clusters near age 29, the Chiron return does not land on a fixed age. Chiron's orbit is eccentric, so the return falls somewhere around ages 49 to 51, and because Chiron usually stations retrograde near its natal spot, it arrives as a window of contacts rather than a single date.

Why is Chiron called the wounded healer?

The name comes from the centaur Chiron in Greek myth, a teacher and healer who carried a wound he could not cure, and who taught from what he learned living with it. In a chart the term is shorthand for a tender spot that, worked with over time, becomes a place of unusual skill. It is a way of reading the placement, not a claim about your medical or psychological history.

Methodology: Chiron's longitude is computed for your exact birth moment by the same astronomy engine behind every Augurine chart. House placement uses Placidus cusps. The sidereal figure subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa at the birth instant from the tropical longitude. Retrograde status reflects Chiron's apparent motion on your birth date. For the sign alone the birth date is usually sufficient; the house and any near-cusp placement need an exact birth time and location.
