What is a Chiron sign?

Chiron is the founding member of the centaur family in astrology, the minor bodies whose orbits cross the giant-planet zone between Jupiter and Neptune. Chiron itself sits between Saturn and Uranus, and your Chiron sign is the zodiac sign it occupied when you were born. Known in astrology as the wounded healer, the sign describes the texture of an old sore spot, and the kind of hard-won skill that can grow from working with it.

Chiron was found in 1977 by the astronomer Charles Kowal, which makes it a late arrival to the chart next to the classical planets. It carries an odd dual identity. It is catalogued both as minor planet 2060 Chiron and as comet 95P/Chiron, because it shows faint cometary activity that neither category fully covers. Sitting between Saturn, the planet of limits, and Uranus, the planet of sudden change, it is usually read as a bridge between the two, and it sets the template the other centaurs (Nessus, Pholus, Chariklo) elaborate.

Read Chiron by sign and house as a prompt rather than a diagnosis. It points at where you are tender, and at where, often because of that tenderness, you have ended up with unusual range. It does not name a trauma or hand you a healing assignment. Read your result the way you would read the Lilith placement, as a question worth sitting with rather than a verdict.

Chiron in Aries

There is an old sense that you had to fight for the right to exist, that wanting something for yourself was the opening move in a battle rather than a simple act. It shows up as a hair-trigger around being overlooked, or a reluctance to want anything out loud because wanting it once cost you. The healing is not more aggression, and it is not surrender; it is learning to assert yourself without bracing for a counterstrike. The shadow is picking fights to feel real, or going so quiet about your needs that resentment speaks for you. Worked with, it becomes a courage that is not angry: proof you can go first without making it a war. Read the full Chiron in Ariesguide →

Chiron in Taurus

Your sense of worth got tangled early with what you have: money, comfort, the body itself, the question of whether there is ever enough. It can leave you holding on too tightly, or quietly certain that security is one bad month from collapse. Sometimes it sits in the body as an unease, a feeling that it is not quite safe ground to stand on. The healing is slow here by nature, and that is not a flaw: it comes from building a value that does not rise and fall with the balance. The shadow is hoarding, or measuring yourself only by what you can point to. What grows from it is a steadiness other people lean on when their own ground shifts. Chiron in Gemini

Somewhere early, words failed you, or you felt you failed at them: not heard, not understood, or quietly filed away as not smart enough. It can leave you over-explaining, going silent rather than risk saying it wrong, or talking circles around the thing you actually mean. There is often an old shame about how you learn, what came easily and what did not. The healing is finding your own voice and using it before it is polished. The shadow is hiding behind cleverness, or collecting information instead of saying the simple, vulnerable thing. Worked with, you can take something tangled and hand it back in language a person can actually hold. Read the full Chiron in Geminiguide →

Chiron in Cancer

The longing here is for a home that holds steady, an emotional ground that stays put, and somewhere early that was not reliable. Maybe the holding came and went, or you became the one doing the holding before anyone held you. It can leave you guarding softness, testing whether care will last, or caretaking so hard there is no room left to be cared for. The healing is re-parenting yourself: learning to be the steady presence you needed, without flinching from your own need. The shadow is clinging, or smothering, or withdrawing first so no one can leave you. Worked with, you build a sanctuary for others that shelters without trapping. Chiron in Leo

The old fear here is of being invisible, of mattering only while you are performing, of love that switches off the moment the spotlight does. It can leave you over-reaching for attention or hiding your light entirely, because being seen and then dropped was once unbearable. There is often a sense that your real self, the un-performed one, would not be enough. The healing is creating for the joy of it rather than the applause, and finding that your worth holds steady when no one is watching. The shadow is making everything a bid for recognition. Worked with, you help other people reclaim their own pride and stop apologizing for taking up space. Read the full Chiron in Leoguide →

Chiron in Virgo

The wound here whispers that you are never quite good enough, and it speaks the language of perfectionism, fix-it mode, and a quiet fear of being a burden. It can show up as relentless self-correction, or as serving everyone else so thoroughly that your own needs never make the list. There may be an old sense that flaws disqualify you from belonging. The healing is trading punishing standards for workable ones, and meeting your own imperfection with the patience you would give a friend. The shadow is criticism turned inward until it calcifies, or help offered mainly as a way to earn a place. Worked with, you offer a practical healing that actually lands, because you have stopped needing it to be perfect. Read the full Chiron in Virgoguide →

Chiron in Libra

The tender place here is around relationship: an old experience of rejection, of being treated unfairly, or of losing yourself in the effort to keep the peace. It can leave you over-accommodating, conflict-avoidant, or so tuned to the other person that you cannot locate your own preference. There is often a fear that having needs will tip the scales and cost you the bond. The healing is a boundaried fairness: staying in connection without disappearing into it. The shadow is peace-keeping that is really self-erasure, or quiet score-keeping that leaks out sideways. Worked with, you can teach what fair partnership actually looks like, and how to disagree without it becoming a rupture. Read the full Chiron in Libraguide →

Chiron in Scorpio

The wound here lives around trust and power, and what happens when they are broken: an early experience of betrayal, of being controlled, or of feeling powerless to protect what mattered. It can leave you bracing for the hidden motive, holding people at a depth they cannot quite reach, or keeping one hand on the exit. Intimacy feels high-stakes because once it cost you. The healing is letting someone in slowly and on purpose, and loosening grudges that have outlived their use. The shadow is control disguised as caution, or testing people until they fail. Worked with, you can walk others through their darkest material without flinching, because you have been there. Read the full Chiron in Scorpioguide →

Chiron in Sagittarius

The wound here is a crisis of meaning: a faith that broke, a sense that life adds up to nothing, or an early message that your truth was not welcome. It can leave you restlessly chasing the next belief, or going cynical to protect the part of you that still wants to believe in something. There may be an old hurt around being told your way of seeing was too much, too foreign, too naive. The healing is a wisdom you actually lived rather than borrowed, held with curiosity instead of certainty. The shadow is preaching, or a spiritual bypass that skips the hard part. Worked with, you can restore other people’s hope without lying to them about reality. Read the full Chiron in Sagittariusguide →

Chiron in Capricorn

The old equation here is that love must be earned through achievement, that you are worth what you accomplish and not much otherwise. It often traces back to authority, to a standard that never quite said well done, to a sense that resting was a kind of failure. It can leave you driven and joyless, or quietly braced for the verdict that you have not done enough. The healing is redefining success on terms that include your own life, and letting worth exist before the work is finished. The shadow is workaholism dressed up as virtue, or measuring people by their output. Worked with, you build a mastery rooted in integrity, and mentor others toward it without the cruelty you were handed. Read the full Chiron in Capricornguide →

Chiron in Aquarius

The tender place here is belonging: a long-standing sense of being the outsider, too different to fit, watching the group from one step outside it. It can leave you proudly detached, or quietly aching to be let in while insisting you do not care. Sometimes the wound is emotional distance itself, a feeling of being one room over from your own feelings. The healing is finding a belonging that does not ask you to file down your edges, and connection that survives your strangeness. The shadow is rejecting the group before it can reject you, or using detachment as armor. Worked with, you build community with room for the people who never had a place, because you know what that costs. Read the full Chiron in Aquariusguide →

Chiron in Pisces

The wound here is porousness: boundaries that never fully formed, so you absorb the room’s pain, guilt, and chaos as though it were your own. It can leave you flooded, unsure which feelings are yours, or escaping into fog because the input is simply too much. There is often an old confusion between compassion and self-erasure, as though helping required dissolving. The healing is grounding the sensitivity rather than numbing it: staying open while keeping a center that holds. The shadow is martyrdom, or vanishing into something, anything, to get away from the feeling. Worked with, you offer a compassionate presence that can sit with another person’s pain without drowning in it. Read the full Chiron in Piscesguide →

How this Chiron calculator works

Enter your birth date, time, and place. The calculator finds Chiron's exact longitude for that moment and reports four things: the sign, the degree, the house, and whether Chiron was retrograde at your birth.

The reason the exact moment matters comes down to Chiron's orbit, which is steeply eccentric. Chiron moves quickly when it is near the Sun and slowly when it is far out, so it can race through one sign in under two years and then sit in another for close to eight. Near a sign change, the placement is genuinely ambiguous from the date alone, and it gets harder when Chiron is retrograde and crossing back over the boundary it just left. If you have only ever checked a Chiron date table, this is the case those tables handle badly. Your birth time and location pin the exact degree, which is the only dependable way to place Chiron near a cusp.

For the sign by itself, your birth date is usually enough. For the house, and for any birth date close to a sign change, the exact time and place do the work. To see Chiron alongside the rest of your placements, run a full birth chart instead.

Your Chiron sign, house, and aspects

Most Chiron calculators stop at the sign. The sign is the slowest layer, though, and a whole age group shares it, so on its own it says less about you than you would think. The house and the aspects are where the placement gets personal.

The sign is the style of the sore spot: the flavor of the sensitivity, and the kind of skill that tends to build around it. The house is where it actually shows up in a life, the specific arena, and because the house depends on your Ascendant it needs your birth time. The aspects are the other planets drawn into the story. A Chiron held tight to the Sun, the Moon, Saturn, or one of the chart angles reads with far more weight than a Chiron sitting quietly with no close contacts. This calculator shows all three layers, plus the degree, so you can see which part of your chart Chiron is actually talking to.

Is Chiron used in Vedic astrology?

Mostly, no. Classical Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, was worked out long before Chiron was discovered in 1977, and it is built around the visible planets together with the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. The large majority of Vedic astrologers do not use Chiron at all, and a Chiron calculator described as Vedic is usually a Western tool with a sidereal zodiac applied to it.

If you do work in a sidereal frame, this calculator gives you Chiron's sidereal position as well, using the Lahiri ayanamsa. In 2026 that sits roughly 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac, often far enough to move Chiron one sign earlier. If the sidereal frame is what you came for, the sidereal birth chart calculator puts your whole chart in that frame.

The Chiron return: why it is not a fixed age

The Saturn return is tidy. It arrives for almost everyone around age 29, give or take a few months, because Saturn's orbit is fairly regular. People expect the Chiron return to behave the same way. It does not.

Chiron's orbit is eccentric and, over long stretches of time, genuinely unstable, nudged around by the gravity of Saturn and Uranus. Its orbital period is usually written as a range, somewhere near 49 to 51 years, rather than one fixed figure. There is a second reason the age slips. Transiting Chiron almost always stations retrograde close to its natal degree, so the return is not a single date. It lands as a window of two or three exact contacts spread across a year or more.

So when someone asks what age the Chiron return happens, the honest answer is a span rather than a single birthday. Most people meet it somewhere between roughly 49 and 51. The same eccentric orbit that makes a date table unreliable is the reason the return refuses to settle on a clean number. The Chiron return calculator computes all three exact contact dates for your birth chart. For contrast, the Saturn return calculator shows how differently a regular orbit behaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Chiron sign?

Your Chiron sign is the zodiac sign Chiron held at your birth. Chiron is a small body orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, discovered in 1977 and read in astrology as the wounded healer. The sign describes the style of an old sore spot and the skill you can build from it. It is a prompt to think with, not a diagnosis.

How do I find my Chiron sign?

Enter your birth date, time, and place above. The calculator computes Chiron's exact longitude for that moment and returns the sign, degree, house, and retrograde status. A printed date table can also give you the sign, but it can place you in the wrong sign near a boundary, which is exactly where a real calculation matters.

Do I need my exact birth time to calculate Chiron?

For the sign alone, usually not. Chiron moves slowly enough that your birth date places it in a sign on most days. Two cases need the exact time: when you were born on a day Chiron changed signs, and whenever you want the house, since the house depends on your Ascendant. For those, an accurate birth time and birth location are required.

Is Chiron a planet?

No. Chiron is a small icy body between Saturn and Uranus, catalogued both as minor planet 2060 Chiron and as comet 95P/Chiron because it shows faint cometary activity. Astrologers use it the way they use other chart points, but it is not one of the traditional planets.

How accurate is this Chiron calculator?

Chiron's longitude is computed for your exact birth moment from the same astronomy engine behind every Augurine chart, so the sign and degree are precise when your birth data is correct. The house is only as accurate as your birth time. If you are unsure of your time, the sign and degree still hold; treat the house as approximate.

Is Chiron used in Vedic astrology?

Generally no. Classical Vedic astrology was set long before Chiron was discovered in 1977, and it centers the visible planets plus the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. Most Vedic astrologers do not use Chiron. If you work in a sidereal frame, this calculator still gives you Chiron's sidereal position using the Lahiri ayanamsa, which sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac in 2026.

What is a Chiron return?

A Chiron return is the point when transiting Chiron comes back to where it sat in your birth chart. Unlike the Saturn return, which clusters near age 29, the Chiron return does not land on a fixed age. Chiron's orbit is eccentric, so the return falls somewhere around ages 49 to 51, and because Chiron usually stations retrograde near its natal spot, it arrives as a window of contacts rather than a single date.

Why is Chiron called the wounded healer?

The name comes from the centaur Chiron in Greek myth, a teacher and healer who carried a wound he could not cure, and who taught from what he learned living with it. In a chart the term is shorthand for a tender spot that, worked with over time, becomes a place of unusual skill. It is a way of reading the placement, not a claim about your medical or psychological history.

Methodology: Chiron's longitude is computed for your exact birth moment by the same astronomy engine behind every Augurine chart. House placement uses Placidus cusps. The sidereal figure subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa at the birth instant from the tropical longitude. Retrograde status reflects Chiron's apparent motion on your birth date. For the sign alone the birth date is usually sufficient; the house and any near-cusp placement need an exact birth time and location.
