Part of Fortune in the 12th House: Meaning and Ruler

With Fortune in the twelfth, Valens writes that “there will be no help, not even during transits.” He also judges the rulers of the Ascendant, Fortune, and Spirit together in this sign as disgrace and lack of daily bread. Even benefics placed here are described as unable to bestow their benefits.[1]

The house is cadent and in aversion to the Ascendant. Its difficult position helps explain the shortage of effective aid. Bodily life and livelihood can be subject to confinement or dependence on an authority that controls the person’s movements.

A day chart in Book II has Cancer rising, the Sun and Mercury in Taurus, and the Moon in Aries. Fortune falls in Gemini in the natal twelfth. The person began with modest means, then became a prefect and governor. The source explains the humble start through Fortune and the nativity’s exaltation falling just before an angle.[2]

Mercury, the ruler of Fortune, occupies Taurus in the favorable natal eleventh. The Sun’s earth triplicity rulers also contribute: Venus and Mars are angular in Cancer. A twelfth-house Fortune depends heavily on its ruler’s ability to act. An effective ruler that aspects Fortune from a place with benefic testimony favors help that reaches the person.[3] A ruler trapped in the same difficult house can repeat the lack of freedom and money described by the Lot.

Fortune’s ruler in the eleventh in the historical example gives a specific basis for interpreting advancement through friends or patrons. A trusted sponsor may secure release from a restrictive obligation or a post that pays. That is a better financial footing than the helplessness described by the twelfth-house rule.
