How to read this ephemeris

An ephemeris is a table of where every planet sits in the zodiac on each day of the year. Read down a single column to follow one body, the Moon racing a sign every two and a half days or Pluto holding one sign for years. Read across a row to see the whole sky on one date. Each cell gives the position as degrees, a sign glyph, and arcminutes, so 25 18 reads as 25 degrees 18 arcminutes of Capricorn, with a retrograde mark when the planet is moving backward.

Each month opens with the turning points worth knowing: the sign ingresses where a planet changes sign, the days a planet stations retrograde or direct, the New and Full Moons, and any eclipses. Positions are given for 12:00 UTC each day and come from NASA JPL's DE440 ephemeris, referred to the true equinox of date, so they match professional astrology software to within a fraction of a degree.

Switch between the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology and the Lahiri sidereal zodiac used in Vedic astrology with the toggle above the table. Sidereal shifts every position back by roughly 24 degrees while the dates of retrogrades, lunations, and eclipses stay put. To cast a full chart for a single moment instead, use the birth chart calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ephemeris?

An ephemeris is a table of where each planet sits in the zodiac for every day of a year. Read down a column to follow one body through the signs, or read across a row to see the whole sky on a single date. Astrologers use it to find exact positions, sign changes, and retrograde stations without casting a full chart.

How do you read an ephemeris table?

Each cell gives a planet's position as degrees, a sign glyph, and arcminutes, so 25 Capricorn 18 means 25 degrees and 18 arcminutes of Capricorn. A retrograde mark beside the figure means the planet is moving backward through the zodiac that day. The date runs down the left column, and the planet glyphs head each column across the top.

What positions does this ephemeris show?

The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Chiron, and the North Node, given at 12:00 UTC each day. Each month also carries a short summary of that month's sign ingresses, retrograde stations, New and Full Moons, and eclipses so the turning points are easy to spot.

Is this a tropical or sidereal ephemeris?

Both. The table defaults to the tropical zodiac, the standard in Western astrology. Switch to sidereal for the Lahiri ayanamsa that Vedic astrology uses, which shifts every position back by roughly 24 degrees while leaving the dates of retrogrades, lunations, and eclipses unchanged.

How accurate are the positions, and where do they come from?

Positions come from NASA JPL's DE440 planetary ephemeris, referred to the true equinox of date, the same standard professional software uses. Practical accuracy is within a fraction of a degree, finer than any chart reading needs.

Why does the Moon move so much faster than the other planets?

The Moon travels about 12 to 15 degrees a day, so it changes sign every two to two and a half days, while the outer planets can hold one sign for years. That is why the Moon's column shifts on every row and Pluto's barely moves down the page.

Can I see the ephemeris for a past or future year?

Yes. This ephemeris covers any year from 1850 to 2149. Follow the year links or change the year in the address to see the 2025, 2026, or 2027 ephemeris, each on its own page with the full daily table and that year's events.

Does the ephemeris show retrogrades and eclipses?

Yes. Each month's summary calls out the sign ingresses, the days a planet stations retrograde or direct, the New and Full Moons, and any eclipses, and the retrograde days are marked in the table itself. The summary at the top of the page gathers those turning points for the whole year in one place.
