What is a void-of-course Moon?
The void-of-course (VOC) Moon is the period after the Moon makes its last major aspect to a planet before it changes zodiac sign. During this window, the Moon is "between engagements" and traditional astrologers consider it an unfavorable time for starting new ventures. The concept dates back to the Hellenistic tradition, where the Moon's aspects served as the primary timing mechanism for mundane and electional work.
VOC periods vary widely in length, from a few minutes to over 24 hours. Short voids happen when the Moon makes a late aspect just before the sign boundary. Long voids occur when the last aspect falls early in a sign, leaving many degrees of travel before the ingress. Our calendar uses NASA's ANISE toolkit for arc-second precision, computing the exact moment of each aspect and sign change. Learn more in our guide to the void-of-course Moon.
What to do during a VOC Moon
Electional astrologers advise against starting important new ventures during a void-of-course Moon. This includes signing contracts, launching products, scheduling first dates or job interviews, submitting applications, and making major purchases. The traditional view holds that actions begun during a void tend to fizzle out, produce unexpected results, or need to be revisited once the Moon re-engages.
The flip side is that VOC periods are excellent for routine tasks, rest, reflection, meditation, journaling, and completing existing projects. Think of the void as a natural pause rather than a danger zone. Activities that do not require a specific external outcome benefit from the unstructured energy. Some modern astrologers even find creative breakthroughs during voids, precisely because the pressure to produce concrete results is lifted.
How VOC times are calculated
Our engine scans forward from the Moon's current position to find the exact moment it crosses into the next zodiac sign (the ingress). It then scans backward to find the last major Ptolemaic aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition) the Moon forms with a classical planet (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, or Saturn). The VOC window runs from the completion of that last aspect to the moment of ingress.
All calculations use NASA's ANISE toolkit for planetary ephemeris data, providing arc-second accuracy. Times are computed in UTC and converted to your local time zone in the browser. The calendar updates hourly via incremental static regeneration, so you always see current data without waiting for a full site rebuild.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a void-of-course Moon?
The void-of-course Moon is the period after the Moon makes its last major aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition) to a classical planet before it enters the next zodiac sign. During this window, the Moon is 'between engagements,' and traditional astrologers consider it an unfavorable time to begin new ventures.
How long does a void-of-course Moon last?
VOC periods range from a few minutes to over 24 hours. Short voids (under an hour) happen when the Moon makes a late aspect in one sign before quickly crossing into the next. Long voids occur when the Moon's last aspect happens early in a sign, leaving many degrees to cross before the sign change.
What should I avoid during a VOC Moon?
Traditional electional astrology advises against starting new projects, signing contracts, launching products, submitting applications, scheduling important meetings, or making major purchases during VOC periods. The idea is that actions begun during a void tend to fizzle out, produce unexpected results, or need to be redone.
What is safe to do during a VOC Moon?
Routine tasks, rest, reflection, meditation, journaling, and finishing existing projects are all considered fine during a VOC Moon. The void is a natural pause, not a danger zone. Many astrologers treat it as good time for inward-focused work that does not require a specific external outcome.
How often does the Moon go void of course?
The Moon goes void of course every 2 to 3 days, since it changes zodiac signs roughly every 2.5 days. Every sign change is preceded by a VOC window of some length. Over the course of a month, there are typically 12 to 14 VOC periods.
How are VOC times calculated?
The calculation scans forward from the Moon's current position to find its next sign ingress, then scans backward to find the last major aspect (0, 60, 90, 120, or 180 degrees) to a classical planet (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, or Saturn). The VOC window runs from the end of that last aspect to the moment of sign ingress.
