Pluto is retrograde. Modern astrologers often read this as a period for reviewing power, control, compulsion, and deeper patterns.

Understanding planetary retrogrades

When a planet appears to move backward through the zodiac, it is called retrograde. This is an optical illusion caused by the relative orbital speeds of Earth and the other planet. Before reversing, a planet reaches its station: it slows to an apparent standstill (stationary retrograde), then begins moving backward. When the retrograde ends, the planet stations again (stationary direct) before resuming forward motion. Astrologers often watch station dates closely because the planet lingers near the same degree longer than usual. In electional astrology, retrograde or stationing planets are one timing factor to weigh against the Moon, planetary hour, and chart ruler.

The shadow period (or "retroshade") extends the cycle further. The pre-shadow begins when the planet first crosses the degree where it will eventually station direct; astrologers may treat that degree range as preview material. The post-shadow lasts from station direct until the planet passes the degree where it originally stationed retrograde. The current-status cards on this page focus on retrograde, stationing, and direct motion. They do not display exact shadow ingress or egress dates.

Mercury retrograde vs. other retrogrades

Mercury retrograde gets the most attention because Mercury is traditionally associated with communication, technology, contracts, and travel. It usually happens three or four times a year, lasting about three weeks each time. In some years, Mercury retrogrades in signs of the same element, which astrologers may read as a repeated symbolic theme.

Venus retrograde, roughly every 18 months for about 40 days, is usually read through relationships, values, aesthetics, and finances. Mars retrograde, roughly every 26 months for about 2 to 2.5 months, is usually read through effort, conflict, assertion, and momentum. Inner-planet retrogrades often feel more personal because their topics map onto everyday choices and relationships.

Outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, each spend months retrograde every year, so natal outer-planet retrogrades are common in a birth chart. In modern practice, they are often read at a longer-term or collective scale, while the personal meaning depends on house placement, aspects, rulerships, and the rest of the chart. A natal retrograde planet is best treated as an interpretive modifier, not a standalone diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mercury in retrograde right now?

Check the status at the top of this page for today's answer. Mercury goes retrograde roughly 3 to 4 times per year, with each retrograde lasting about 3 weeks. This page is refreshed hourly from ephemeris-backed planetary positions.

What is a shadow period?

Shadow periods (pre-shadow and post-shadow) mark the zodiac degrees a planet will retrace, or has retraced, during a retrograde cycle. Many astrologers use them as an interpretive extension of the retrograde. The current-status cards on this page focus on retrograde, stationing, and direct motion rather than exact shadow ingress or egress dates.

What does retrograde actually mean?

Retrograde is an apparent change in direction where a planet seems to move backward against the sky because of the relative motion of Earth and the planet. In astrology, retrograde periods are often used for review, reflection, and revision in the topics associated with that planet. They are not automatically negative.

How often does Mercury go retrograde?

Mercury goes retrograde 3 to 4 times per year, with each retrograde lasting about 3 weeks. Some astrologers also track pre-shadow and post-shadow periods around those dates. This tracker answers the current Mercury motion state and refreshes hourly.

Do all planets go retrograde?

All astrological planets except the Sun and Moon can appear retrograde from Earth's perspective. This page tracks Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Chiron. Outer planets spend months retrograde each year, so their natal retrogrades are common and need chart context.
