Retrogrades recur in patterns. Replay shows the sequence.

Each retrograde revisits themes from past cycles. Replay maps retrograde windows across your timeline alongside your other timing systems, so you can see how these review periods connect to life chapters and where their themes keep returning.

Understanding planetary retrogrades

When a planet appears to move backward through the zodiac, it's called retrograde — an optical illusion caused by the relative orbital speeds of Earth and the other planet. Before reversing, a planet reaches its station: it slows to an apparent standstill (stationary retrograde), then begins moving backward. When the retrograde ends, the planet stations again (stationary direct) before resuming forward motion. Planets at station concentrate their energy at a single degree for days or even weeks, making station dates some of the most significant moments in the cycle.

The shadow period (or "retroshade") extends the cycle further. The pre-shadow begins when the planet first crosses the degree where it will eventually station direct — themes that will be revisited start surfacing. The post-shadow lasts from station direct until the planet passes the degree where it originally stationed retrograde, completing the integration. Our tracker detects all of these states in real time using NASA's ANISE toolkit.

Mercury retrograde vs. other retrogrades

Mercury retrograde gets the most attention because Mercury governs communication, technology, contracts, and travel — areas where disruptions are immediately noticeable. It happens three times a year (occasionally four), lasting about three weeks each time, with the full cycle including shadows stretching to roughly eight to ten weeks. Mercury tends to retrograde in signs of the same element within a given year, creating a recurring elemental theme.

Venus retrograde (roughly every 18 months, lasting about 40 days) prompts reassessment of relationships, values, and finances — over an 8-year span, its five retrograde points trace a pentagonal pattern through the zodiac. Mars retrograde (every 26 months, lasting 2–2.5 months) is the rarest inner-planet retrograde and tends to slow momentum, redirect ambition, and resurface unresolved conflicts. These inner-planet retrogrades feel personal and acute.

Outer planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto — each spend four to six months retrograde every year, meaning roughly 30–44% of people have any given outer planet retrograde in their birth chart. Their effects are subtler and more generational: long-term structural revision, shifts in collective values, and slow-burning psychological reckonings rather than day-to-day disruptions. A natal retrograde planet turns its energy inward — Mercury retrograde in the birth chart, for instance, often indicates a reflective thinker who excels at revision and editorial work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mercury in retrograde right now?

Check the status at the top of this page for today's answer. Mercury goes retrograde roughly 3-4 times per year, each lasting about 3 weeks. Our tracker shows the live motion state computed from real-time planetary positions.

What is a shadow period?

Shadow periods (pre-shadow and post-shadow) mark the zodiac degrees that a planet will retrace or has retraced during retrograde. Events and themes from the pre-shadow often resurface during retrograde, and the post-shadow is a period of integration as the planet clears those degrees moving forward.

What does retrograde actually mean?

Retrograde is an optical illusion where a planet appears to move backward in the sky due to relative orbital speeds between Earth and the planet. In astrology, retrograde periods invite review, reflection, and revision in the areas that planet governs. It's not inherently negative — it's a time to revisit and refine.

How often does Mercury go retrograde?

Mercury goes retrograde 3 to 4 times per year, with each retrograde lasting about 3 weeks. Including pre-shadow and post-shadow periods, Mercury spends roughly 2 months per cycle in some phase of retrograde activity. Our tracker shows the exact current state in real time.

Do all planets go retrograde?

All planets except the Sun and Moon experience retrograde periods. Inner planets (Mercury and Venus) retrograde less frequently, while outer planets (Jupiter through Pluto) spend several months retrograde each year. Outer planet retrogrades are subtler and more generational in effect.

Retrograde periods are easier when you practice with them

Retrogrades revisit themes that benefit from conscious attention. The Constellation Atlas helps you work with retrograde energy directly: study the archetype being reviewed, carry one prompt into the day, and track what resurfaces.
