Natal Retrograde Calculator
Enter your birth details to see which planets were retrograde when you were born, from Mercury through Pluto plus Chiron, and what each one means for how you run that part of your life.
What each natal retrograde means
Frequency matters when you weigh these. A retrograde Venus is a genuine signature because it is rare. A retrograde Pluto is close to a coin flip, so it modifies a chart rather than defining it. Percentages below are the share of time each planet spends retrograde, which matches the share of births.
Mercury retrograde
Thought that drafts before it speaks
Venus retrograde
Affection with a private interior
Mars retrograde
Drive that banks before it burns
Jupiter retrograde
Belief built from your own evidence
Saturn retrograde
Authority answering to an inner judge
Uranus retrograde
The quiet radical
Neptune retrograde
Imagination facing inward
Pluto retrograde
Power worked from the inside
Chiron retrograde
The wound that teaches on review
What a retrograde planet in your birth chart means
A retrograde planet in a birth chart is a planet that appeared to move backward through the zodiac on the day you were born. Astrologers read a natal retrograde as a function turned inward: the planet's themes get reviewed and reworked internally before they show in outward behavior.
The backward motion is apparent, never physical. Every planet keeps orbiting the Sun in the same direction; retrograde happens when Earth's own motion overtakes or is overtaken by the other planet, the way a slower car seems to roll backward as you pass it. The birth chart freezes that geometry at your first breath, and whatever was mid-loop gets marked with an Rx.
Traditions weigh it differently. Hellenistic and medieval astrologers listed retrogradation among the impediments, a planet less able to push its agenda in the visible world. Vedic astrology often reads the same condition as strength, since a retrograde planet is near Earth, bright, and moving powerfully in Chesta Bala terms. Modern practice mostly reads interiority: the function works, on its own schedule, facing inward. We hold the modern line with one traditional caveat, expect the planet's results to arrive on the second pass rather than the first.
This calculator reads the sky at your birth. For today's sky, the retrograde tracker shows which planets are retrograde right now, including stations and shadow phases.
How common is each natal retrograde
The odds of being born with a given planet retrograde equal the share of time that planet spends retrograde, and the spread is wide. Mercury manages it about 19 percent of the time, Venus only 7, Mars 9. The outer planets are different animals: Jupiter sits retrograde about 30 percent of the time, Saturn 36, Uranus 41, Neptune 43, Pluto 44, with Chiron a bit over a third. Those figures fall out of each planet's synodic cycle, the rhythm at which Earth laps it or is lapped.
The practical rule: rarity sets weight. A retrograde Mercury, Venus, or Mars is uncommon enough to treat as a personal signature. A retrograde Pluto is close to a coin flip and mostly reads as background unless the planet is emphasized by house or aspect. The ephemeris shows the actual retrograde spans for any year, including the one you were born in.
How many retrograde planets is normal
Across the nine bodies this calculator checks, the average chart carries two or three retrogrades, driven mostly by the slow planets and their long retrograde seasons. Zero is the striking result: only a few charts in every hundred have every body moving direct. Four or five marks a genuinely review-heavy chart, and six or more is rare enough that most astrologers see a handful in a career.
Count is a texture reading, never a score. A chart with five retrogrades is a temperament that metabolizes experience before expressing it, which can look like depth or like delay depending on the decade. A chart with none runs live. Neither one is the better hand; they are different relationships between inner process and outer act.
Born near a station
Twice per cycle a planet stands almost still: the station retrograde, where forward motion runs out, and the station direct, where the backward loop ends. A planet within a day or so of either station was nearly motionless at your birth, and astrologers across traditions treat stationing planets as loud, the way a held note carries over moving ones. If this calculator flips a planet's status when you nudge your birth date by a day, you were born inside a station window and that planet deserves attention regardless of which side it landed on.
Stations are also why birth time almost never changes this result. A planet's retrograde flag holds for weeks at a stretch, so only a birth within hours of an exact station could flip it. Time matters here for one thing: house placement, which needs an accurate Ascendant. The same station mechanics produce triple-pass contacts in transit work, where the planetary returns calculator counts one return happening three times.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was I born during Mercury retrograde?
Enter your birth date above and the calculator answers from ephemeris data. The base rate is about 19 percent, roughly one person in five, so it is a common placement rather than a curse. Natal Mercury retrograde reads as thinking that drafts before it speaks: strong at editing, research, and considered writing, slower at live back-and-forth. It describes a style of processing, never damaged communication.
Can the Sun or Moon be retrograde?
No. Retrograde motion is a line-of-sight effect between Earth and another planet orbiting the Sun. The Sun's apparent motion is Earth's own orbit reflected back, and the Moon circles Earth directly, so neither can ever appear to reverse through the zodiac. If an app shows you a retrograde Sun or Moon, that is a bug in the app.
Is my North Node retrograde, and is that bad?
Almost certainly, and no. The Mean Node is retrograde by definition, drifting backward through the zodiac about 19 degrees per year. The True Node, which this site computes, wobbles day to day but moves backward on balance, so it spends most of its time retrograde with short direct stretches. A retrograde node is the node's normal state, and it carries no affliction.
Does a retrograde planet in my chart make that planet weak?
Depends on whom you ask. Hellenistic and medieval sources listed retrogradation among the impediments, reducing a planet's power to act in the world. Vedic astrology often scores the same condition as strong, since a retrograde planet is close to Earth and bright, earning high Chesta Bala. Modern Western practice mostly reads interiority rather than strength. The workable synthesis: the planet functions fully, but its results tend to arrive on review, the second attempt, the revised draft, the relationship revisited.
Is it rare to have no retrograde planets?
Yes. With nine bodies checked and the slow planets each retrograde a third to nearly half the time, only a few charts in every hundred come out fully direct. An all-direct chart runs in real time, expressing what it thinks and wants without a built-in review pass. People with it often benefit from borrowing the review habit deliberately, since it does not come installed.
Does my birth time change which planets are retrograde?
Almost never. Retrograde periods run from weeks to months, so the flag is set by your birth date, and only a birth within hours of an exact station could flip one. Birth time matters for the houses your retrograde planets occupy, which is where the interpretation gets specific. If you do not know your time, the retrograde list itself remains fully accurate.
Are my retrograde planets the same in sidereal and Vedic charts?
Yes, identical. Retrograde is a fact about motion, and the tropical and sidereal zodiacs are two labeling frames laid over the same sky. The frame shifts which sign your retrograde planet occupies; it cannot change whether the planet was retrograde. What changes between traditions is interpretation, with Vedic astrology generally granting retrograde planets more strength than Western sources do.
