How this calculator reads the manzils
The Moon's position comes from the same computation engine behind Augurine, built on JPL ephemeris data. The 28 manzils are anchored to their determinant stars in the Pleiades-first ordering, where Al Thurayya is the first station, so each station's width follows the real spacing of its star and they average about 12°51' apiece. Because the mansions are anchored to fixed stars, your Moon is matched against the star frame for your birth year, not a single fixed table.
A manzil can describe emotional tempo and timing instinct. It does not predict events, guarantee outcomes, or stand in for medical, legal, or financial advice. Read it as a pattern you can work with.
What is a lunar mansion (manzil)?
A lunar mansion, or manzil, is one of 28 segments of the Moon's monthly path around the ecliptic, averaging about 12°51' apiece. The Moon crosses about one mansion per day. The Arabic manzils, the manazil al-qamar or "stations of the Moon," each carry a ruling angel, electional guidance for what to begin or avoid, and a talismanic image inherited from the medieval magical tradition.
The word is plain. A manzil was the place a camel and rider stopped for the night on a desert journey, a roadside inn. Arab astronomers borrowed that image for the Moon's nightly resting places against the stars. Each station takes its name from the determinant star that marks it: Al Thurayya for the Pleiades, Al Dabaran for Aldebaran in Taurus, Al Simak for Spica.
This is a finer grain than the twelve zodiac signs. A sign holds the Moon for two and a half days. A manzil holds it for one. So two people born a day apart, both with the Moon in Gemini, can still belong to different stations with different lore, the resolution a Moon sign can't give you. Browse all 28 Arabic manzils for the full per-station record.
Arabic manzils vs. Vedic nakshatras
Both systems slice the Moon's path into stations, and people mix them up constantly. They are not the same tradition, and blending them muddies both.
The Arabic manzils number 28 and come out of the medieval Arabic and later Renaissance world, where timing and talismanic magic were the point. The Vedic nakshatras number 27, sit in the sidereal zodiac, and lean toward natal character and deity rulership within Jyotish. They overlap at the stars; the Pleiades anchor both Al Thurayya and Krittika. But the framing diverges hard after that. This calculator gives you the Arabic manzil.
What the manzils are for
The medieval use was timing, and it was specific. The Picatrix and the grimoire tradition treated each station as a window: start the right kind of work while the Moon sits in a friendly manzil, hold off while it sits in a hostile one. With the Moon in Al Dabaran, the texts say, pursue business, travel, marriage, and medicine. With the Moon in Al Hak'ah, begin a fight but do not sow.
Each manzil also carries a ruling angel and a talismanic recipe, an image, a material, and a perfume tied to a specific aim. The manzil pages carry the full set, including the openly destructive stations, as a historical record rather than instruction. If you track lunar timing for elections, pair this with the void-of-course Moon so you know when the Moon's applying aspects have run out.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a lunar mansion?
A lunar mansion is one of the segments the Moon passes through on its monthly trip around the ecliptic, averaging about 12°51' apiece. The Arabic system divides the path into 28 mansions, called manzils, and the Moon spends roughly a day in each. Every manzil has its own meaning, ruling angel, and electional guidance for what to start or avoid while the Moon occupies it.
How many lunar mansions are there, 27 or 28?
The Arabic manzil system uses 28 mansions. The Vedic nakshatra system uses 27, occasionally 28 with the intercalary station Abhijit added. The difference comes from how each tradition handles the Moon's sidereal orbit of about 27.3 days: the 28-fold division gives clean roughly-daily stations, while the 27-fold division splits the zodiac into equal arcs. This calculator uses the 28 Arabic manzils.
How do I find which lunar mansion my Moon is in?
Enter your birth date, time, and place. The calculator computes your Moon's exact ecliptic longitude and maps it to one of the 28 manzils, then shows the determinant star, ruling angel, and electional notes for that station. An accurate birth time helps, because the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day and can cross a mansion boundary within hours.
What's the difference between Arabic manzils and Vedic nakshatras?
Manzils are the 28 Arabic lunar mansions from the medieval and Renaissance tradition, focused on electional timing and talismanic magic. Nakshatras are the 27 Vedic lunar mansions in the sidereal zodiac, focused on natal character and muhurta. They share some determinant stars, such as the Pleiades, but use different orderings and interpretive frameworks. Reading them as one system blurs both.
What lunar mansion is the Moon in today?
The live readout at the top of this page names the manzil the Moon occupies right now and tells you when it crosses into the next one. Because the Moon moves about a mansion a day, this changes daily, which is exactly what electional astrologers track when timing a new venture, a journey, or a ritual.
How long does the Moon stay in each lunar mansion?
Roughly one day. With 28 mansions and a sidereal orbit of about 27.3 days, the Moon spends a little under 24 hours in most stations, which span about 12°51'26" of the ecliptic on average. That's why the manzils give finer timing than the Moon sign, which lasts about two and a half days.
What were the lunar mansions used for?
Electional timing and talismanic magic, mainly. Medieval astrologers, drawing on texts like the Picatrix, chose the moment to begin work by which manzil the Moon occupied: some stations favor travel, trade, marriage, or medicine, while others suit conflict or are best avoided. Each manzil also carried a ruling angel and a talismanic image used to make rings and seals for specific aims.
What does my natal Moon mansion say about me?
Your natal manzil is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied when you were born, read as a lens on your emotional tempo and timing instincts rather than a prediction. It points to the rhythms that feel native to you and the kinds of starts you take to naturally. It describes a tendency, not a fixed outcome.
