The Bright One of the Broken Ring
Alpha Coronae Borealis. From the Arabic Al Munīr al Fakkah, the bright one of the dish or broken ring. The Fakkah refers to the broken or incomplete circle of the constellation. Also known as Gemma (Latin, 'the Gem'), a name introduced by later European astronomers. Allen records the constellation's association with the crown of Ariadne, placed among the stars by Dionysus.
Known As
A ribbon knot holds the Northern Crown's flowers or leaves together, and Alphecca sits at that knot. The wreath belongs to Ariadne, abandoned by Theseus before she became the wife of Bacchus. Ariadne's crown and Alphecca's knot
Ariadne's story gives the Crown a history of abandonment and changed circumstances. Allen tells how Theseus deserted her and she became the wife of Bacchus. In his versions, the crown placed in the sky had been given by Theseus or by Venus; he also records authors who put Ariadne herself among the stars. [5] A birth in 1980 uses about 12°01′ Scorpio; a birth in 2000 uses about 12°18′ Scorpio. Augurine's calculator uses a conjunction orb of 0°30′ for this star. Use the degree for the birth year when deciding whether a planet falls inside that narrow orb.
The Anonymous says Alphecca co-rises with the 16th degree of Libra. Firmicus places the rising Crown constellation at the fifth degree of Virgo. [4] [8] These are rising relationships. Far north of the ecliptic, the star reaches the horizon alongside a zodiac degree in another part of the sky. Alphecca's wreath makers and crowned man
Manilius takes the rising Crown into the garden. His account includes tending plants and making adornments, with an appetite for elegant dress and the pleasure of the hour. Ariadne marries Theseus at Gnosos on Crete, the island ruled by her father Minos. Theseus deserts her, and she becomes the wife of Bacchus. Her crown passes into the sky as the Northern Crown. In Allen's versions, the gift comes from Theseus or from Venus; another version puts Ariadne herself among the stars as the constellation. [1]
