Meaning
The Scorcher, the Glowing One
Alpha Canis Majoris. The brightest star in the night sky. From the Greek σείριος meaning scorching or sparkling. Homer, Hesiod, and Aratos all wrote of it. Its heliacal rising in midsummer was anciently associated with the oppressive heat of the 'dog days.' In Egypt, the heliacal rising of Sirius (as Sopdet or Sothis) predicted the annual flooding of the Nile, making it the most important star in Egyptian astronomy and the foundation of their calendar.
Known As
From the Greater Dog's mouth, Sirius shines in a figure that guarded Europa in one story and pursued the Hare as Orion's hound in another. Greek writers identified Sirius with Sothis, a form of Isis whose return before dawn was connected with the Nile flood and New Year. Cultivation depended on that water. The Dog Star's authority and guardianship
Influence. According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Jupiter and Mars : and, to Alvidas, of the Moon, Jupiter and Mars. It gives honour, renown, wealth, ardour, faithfulness, devotion, passion and resentment, and makes its natives custodians, curators and guardians. It also gives danger of dog bites, and two examples of this effect will be found under Procyon.

Hephaistio pays attention to how the returning star looks. In Book 1.23, a golden appearance receives a favorable judgment of fertility and a timely, moderate flood; a dark appearance receives the opposite judgment. Why Sirius was called the Scorcher
Allen traces Sirius to the Greek sense of sparkling or scorching. Before it became this star's proper name, the word could describe other bright heavenly objects.
