Mercury Through the Twelve Signs

Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, and a zodiac sign is 30 degrees wide. So your Mercury is always in your Sun sign, the sign just before it, or the sign just after it, and never anywhere else. That narrows twelve possibilities down to three before you even run the chart.

When Mercury sits in the same sign as your Sun, your will and your mind speak the same language and you tend to think the way you act. When it falls in a neighboring sign, there is a revealing offset: a Leo Sun with Mercury in Virgo wants the spotlight but edits the script first. Guessing which of the three is yours does not work near a sign change, which is exactly why running the date earns its keep.

Traditional astrology rates how comfortably a planet operates in each sign. Mercury rules both Gemini and Virgo, and it is also exalted in Virgo, the only planet exalted in a sign it already rules, which makes Virgo its most dignified seat. It sits in detriment in Sagittarius and Pisces, the signs opposite its rulerships, and in fall in Pisces, opposite its exaltation. In the remaining signs it is peregrine, neither strengthened nor weakened, and takes its color from the sign's ruler instead.

Dignity is not a verdict on intelligence. A Mercury in detriment or fall simply thinks against the grain of its sign, trading literal precision for vision or intuition, and that trade often produces the most original minds. Each sign guide names the dignity and what it means in practice.
