Drive and Desire
Mars Through the Twelve Signs
How You Act, Sign by Sign
Mars is the part of your chart that shows how you act: how you chase what you want, how you fight, what makes you angry, and how you spend physical and sexual energy. The sign it sits in shapes all of it. These twelve guides take each Mars sign in turn: how it pursues and asserts, how it expresses desire, the traditional strength or weakness of Mars there, and the growth edge it carries.

Source boundary
Mars is an exact natal placement and an interpretive symbol. The sign it occupies describes a way of acting and a set of tendencies, not proof of character, behavior, or how any conflict or relationship will turn out.
What your Mars sign actually describes
Your Sun sign is your core identity. Your Mars sign is what you do about it: the specific way you go after a goal, a person, or a fight, and the way you handle anger and pressure. Where the Sun is who you are and the Moon is what you need, Mars is how you act. Two people with the same Sun can behave nothing alike in a conflict because their Mars signs differ.
Mars also governs physical drive, competition, and sexual energy, so the sign it occupies colors more than temper. It shapes how you compete, what you find worth fighting for, how you pursue attraction, and the pace at which you move from wanting something to chasing it.
Why your Mars sign can differ so much from your Sun
Venus never strays far from the Sun, so a Venus sign is always close to a Sun sign. Mars is different. It orbits beyond Earth, which means from where we stand it can sit anywhere relative to the Sun, from the same degree to the far side of the chart. Your Mars can be a sign or two from your Sun, or half the zodiac away.
That distance is why Mars so often surprises people. A mild Sun sign can carry a forceful Mars, and a bold Sun sign can carry a Mars that fights sideways. Guessing your Mars from your Sun does not work, which is exactly why running the date earns its keep.
Reading the dignity of Mars by sign
Traditional astrology rates how comfortably a planet operates in each sign. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, so it works from home in both. It is exalted in Capricorn, where discipline gives the drive a long target and the patience to reach it. It sits in detriment in Libra and Taurus, the signs opposite its rulerships, and in fall in Cancer, opposite its exaltation. In the remaining signs it is peregrine, neither strengthened nor weakened by dignity.
Dignity is not a verdict on whether you can act well. A Mars in fall or detriment simply has to work against the grain of its sign, and that friction often produces the most self-aware, deliberate people. Each sign guide names the dignity and what it means in practice.
