Jupiter Through the Twelve Signs

Jupiter moves only about five arcminutes a day and spends roughly a year in each sign, so everyone born during the same year-long stretch shares your Jupiter sign. The sign is a generational layer as much as a personal one, which is why two things individualize it: the house Jupiter falls in, which needs your birth time, and the aspects it makes to the rest of your chart.

The sign also sets a clock. Jupiter takes about twelve years to circle the zodiac, so it comes back to its birth position roughly every twelve years, near ages 12, 24, 36, 47, and 59. Essential dignity is traditional astrology's account of a planet's condition in each sign. Ptolemy gives Jupiter two domiciles, Sagittarius and Pisces, places its exaltation in Cancer, and places its depression, now usually called its fall, in Capricorn. Detriment, the sign opposite a domicile, puts Jupiter in Gemini and Virgo. In the remaining six signs Jupiter holds no major dignity, a condition usually called peregrine, and the sign's own ruler shapes much of the reading. Jupiter still holds a minor dignity as a triplicity lord of the fire signs, and in the Dorothean scheme of the air signs as well.

Dignity describes the planet's condition in a sign and carries no judgment of your fortune or your worth. The early record is uneven: Chris Brennan notes that most introductory Hellenistic texts never define detriment, and Firmicus Maternus opens his entry for Jupiter in Virgo, a detriment sign, with a favorable portrait.
