Jupiter in Taurus: Meaning and Growth

Forrest's inflation warning for Taurus concerns "the hyped, empty promises" of a commercialized world, and he names glamour, money, and fame among them. In his account they promise far more peace than they deliver. The excess for this placement tends to look like accumulation past the point of need, or a belief in security that keeps asking for one more thing before it can rest.

Abu Ma'shar's list of Jupiter's significations includes prosperity and wealth, and in the same passage he writes that Jupiter can indicate "recklessness and haste" befalling the person it signifies. In Taurus the excess rarely looks like haste. It tends to show up as stubbornness, the other side of the steadiness Sasportas describes, when a belief or a possession is kept after it has stopped serving you.

Ptolemy gives Jupiter its domiciles in Sagittarius and Pisces (Tetrabiblos I.17) and its exaltation in Cancer, with its depression in Capricorn (I.19). Taurus is none of these, so by sign Jupiter is peregrine here. Helena Avelar and Luis Ribeiro gloss peregrine as "in passing," a planet with nothing of its own in that part of the zodiac that answers to the lords who govern there. They also count the minor dignities of term and face, and by that fuller count they list Jupiter as peregrine in Taurus except between 14 and 22 degrees.

Taurus is an earth sign, and Demetra George's table gives the earth triplicity to Venus by day and the Moon by night, with Mars cooperating, so Jupiter holds no triplicity role here. George writes that the diurnal planets generally do better in the fire and air triplicities, where they have rulership. Sect adds a second layer. Ptolemy reports the Sun and Jupiter as diurnal (I.7), Rhetorius counts Jupiter among the sect rulers of day births, and Chris Brennan writes that in a night chart a benefic has its positive significations suppressed while it stays moderately positive. That reading needs a birth time.

Julius Firmicus Maternus opens his Taurus entry (Mathesis V.IV, in Jean Rhys Bram's condensed translation) by giving the natives "great fame and power," then qualifies it with serious troubles in early life, including quarrels with the powerful and losses. After that period he describes the friendship of the powerful, and natives who are just, brave, and trustworthy friends, fluent in speech, who seek nothing for themselves, and he ties all of it to the calculation of the whole chart. The entry describes status and patronage in a Roman social world, and it reads as historical delineation rather than a portrait of a modern person.

Forrest and the material reading part ways on this sign. Forrest's Book of Fire sets the aim as "an abundance of peace," which he spells out as rest and the ability to tell when you have enough. He adds silence, a healthy relationship with the body, real friends, and natural beauty, with time to enjoy them. On his account the Taurean abundance is measured in calm.

Sasportas and Oken lean toward the material world. Sasportas opens with God sought in money and possessions and then allows for nature and philosophy as other routes. Oken ties the placement to the practical expression of experience in the material sphere of life. Neither promises wealth, and both keep the material reading as a tendency. Forrest reads the same earthy Jupiter as a call for sufficiency.

One way to hold both readings is as stages of one appetite. Sasportas's believer in security and Forrest's seeker of peace both want to feel safe in the physical world. The first looks for safety in having, the second in knowing when there is enough, and a person with this placement may move from one toward the other over a lifetime.

A retrograde Jupiter comes around roughly every 13 months: James Evans gives 399 days from one retrograde to the next, and Forrest estimates that each one lasts about four months. Between 1930 and 2030, Jupiter was retrograde in Taurus during part of 1940, 1952 into 1953, 1964 into 1965, 1976 into 1977, 1988 into 1989, 1999, 2011, and 2023. The 1976 and 1988 retrogrades began in Gemini and backed into Taurus, and the 1999 retrograde began in Taurus and backed into Aries, so a birth in those periods needs the exact date to settle both the sign and the direction.

In Brennan's survey, retrograde planets appear only occasionally in the surviving Hellenistic texts, and many of those passages read retrograde motion as delay. Vettius Valens gives the fullest statement (Anthology IV.14): past the first station a planet delays expectations, actions, profits, and enterprises, and at the second station the delay lifts. He wrote it about transits and time lords, so it reaches a birth chart only by extension.

Demetra George reports the modern reframing of retrograde planets as an internalization of the planet's function, and Forrest's Inner Sky gives retrograde Jupiter a deeply rooted inner faith, with a hedge that it may produce a very serious exterior. Martin Schulman, writing within a karmic and reincarnational framework, goes further and says that for retrograde Jupiter "richness in the inner being" comes to take precedence over the desire for outer riches. That is one esoteric author's view. Applied to Taurus, these readings suggest values worked out privately before they are acted on. No source reviewed here ties the retrograde to money or fortune.

Avelar and Ribeiro note that Jupiter completes its cycle in 12 years and so spends about a year in each sign. A shared Jupiter in Taurus therefore mostly tells you that two people were born in the same year-long stretch, or a full cycle apart. Ronald Davison makes the same point about Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, whose signs contemporaries tend to share, and it holds for Jupiter over a shorter span.

The better question is Sasportas's, asked of both people: what does each believe in, and how does each share it? For a Taurus Jupiter, the useful conversation is often about security, what makes each of you feel safe and how much is enough. Forrest's test for this placement is recognizing enough when you see it. Name a concrete amount of money or time that would count as enough for the next year, and write it down before you reach it. That gives the steadiness Sasportas describes a finish line.

Forrest also asks this Jupiter to trust quiet and the body's signals. Protect regular unhurried time and some contact with the natural world, which Sasportas names as one of this placement's routes to meaning. When a belief or possession has stopped serving you, change it on purpose rather than waiting until you are forced to.
