Beta Persei. From the Arabic Ra's al-Ghūl, the Head of the Demon or Ogre. Represents the severed head of Medusa held by Perseus. Its remarkable variability (dimming every 2.87 days) was likely known in antiquity and contributed to its sinister reputation. The Hebrew name Rōsh ha Sāṭān (Satan's Head) and the Latin Caput Larvæ (Head of the Spectre) reflect the same fearsome associations across cultures.

Algol is Beta Persei, the bright star in the Gorgon's head. Allen traces its Arabic name to the Demon's Head and explains al Ghul as a mischief-maker. He also records Lilith, Adam's legendary first wife, among its Hebrew names; Robson repeats that identification. The Chinese name in both books is Tseih She, the Piled-up Corpses. [2] [1] Such names make it easy to fear a conjunction before looking at the person's life.
In Allen's account, Perseus uses Minerva's shield as a mirror to avoid Medusa's gaze, then uses the severed head in rescuing Andromeda. Manilius also describes the raised Gorgon face as part of the rescue. [2] [7] Perseus needs a way of looking at what he fears that lets him act. With Algol prominent, anger demands the same distance. Algol was at 24°47′ Taurus in 1900 and reaches 26°32′ Taurus in 2026; its next tropical sign ingress is into Gemini in June 2274. Robson printed 25°3′ Taurus for 1920. [1] A birth in 1980 uses about 25°53′ Taurus, so the degree you check moves with the date of the chart. Augurine's calculator uses a conjunction orb of 45′ for Algol.

Medusa's serpents and the reflection in Minerva's shield
Perseus holds Medusa's head in his left hand and a curved blade received from Mercury in his right. The young hero wears winged sandals and has a light scarf thrown around his body. Algol shines in the severed head; Allen traces its Arabic name to the Demon's Head. [2]
Medusa, who was the only mortal one of the three Gorgon sisters, was originally a beautiful maiden, but her hair was changed into hissing serpents by Minerva in consequence of her having become by Neptune the mother of Chrysaor and Pegasus in one of Minerva’s temples. This gave her so fearful an appearance that everyone who looked at her was changed into stone.
Perseus owed Polydectes a Gorgon's head. He found the sisters asleep at the Ocean, where he could approach Medusa with Minerva's shield as a mirror. Looking at her reflection let him avoid the glance that would turn him to stone. He cut off her head and later used it to rescue Andromeda. The severed head remained dangerous after Medusa's death, and the hero turned that danger against what threatened Andromeda. Allen tells the rescue this way. [2]
