Why Hydra's Heart is called solitary
From Al Fard al Shuja, the Solitary One in the Serpent.
Allen explains Alphard's solitary name through its position in the sky. He traces the name to Arabic and records other Arabic names for the serpent's backbone and neck. Tycho introduced Cor Hydrae, the Hydra's Heart; Allen also records a Latin Neck title. [1] The familiar Heart name and the solitary name have different histories, although both now identify Alpha Hydrae.
Fiorenza makes solitude the basis of his modern reading in sidereal Leo. His Alphard is willing to leave an accepted consensus and pursue an independent path, even at the cost of standing alone. [7] Choosing your own course differs from finding everyone difficult to tolerate. You might need to leave a group because it has no room for the work you want to do. You might also need company that permits disagreement without demanding that you leave.
Robson also identifies Hydra as the snake carried to Apollo by the crow. [2] In Allen's account of Chinese astronomy, Alphard determines the eighth lunar division, Sing, in the neck of the Red Bird. [1]
Alphard's pleasure and the turn to restraint
Ptolemy states that it is of the nature of Saturn and Venus, but according to Alvidas it is similar to the Sun and Jupiter in sextile. It gives wisdom, musical and artistic appreciation, knowledge of human nature, strong passions, lack of self-control, immorality, revolting deeds and a sudden death by drowning, poison or asphyxiation.
Robson's 1923 account moves from appreciation of art to predictions of punishment and death. Treat those dangers as tendencies to weigh against the whole chart, rather than literal predictions. Someone who recognizes what is beautiful or desirable may still have difficulty deciding how much room it should occupy. Brady calls for a subject or cause that receives deliberate effort. For the Moon, Robson includes failed projects and financial help from a relative; the Anonymous allows substantial possessions in his rising account. Mars is the combination Brady singles out in her discussion of violent examples, while Robson's Mars list stresses scandal through love affairs. Blake and King in Brady's Alphard examples
Brady describes William Blake with Alphard rising as Jupiter reaches the Nadir, and Stephen King with Alphard culminating with Saturn. She also gives O. J. Simpson as an example of Alphard setting while Jupiter culminates. These are her reported paran examples, in which the star and planet occupy angles together. [6] Blake and Simpson share a Jupiter contact in very different lives. The planet alone tells you too little to assume someone finds their passion easy to manage.
Brady advises a focus that receives strength and determination. [6] Ask what the person returns to willingly, even when the work is difficult. Alphard's late Leo degree before March 2195
Alphard stands at about 27°39′ tropical Leo in 2026. Robson lists 26°10′ Leo in 1920. [2] For a birth in 1950, use about 26°35′ Leo; for 2000, about 27°17′ Leo. The difference matters with a close conjunction. Augurine's calculator uses an Alphard conjunction orb of 1°07′30″, so choose the position for the birth year before deciding which planet to read.
Alphard enters tropical Virgo in March 2195. The change of sign follows precession, while Ptolemy's Saturn-Venus attribution concerns the bright stars of the constellation Hydra. [3] For present-day natal work, check a late-Leo planet against the birth year's degree.
Alphard and the snake in the crow's excuse
Apollo needs water for a feast he is giving Jupiter in Robson's legend. He sends the crow to fetch it with a cup, but the bird notices a fig tree along the way. The figs are still unripe. The crow settles down to wait, then feasts on the fruit before remembering the errand. The crow fears Apollo's anger. [2]
The crow picks up a snake and takes it back to Apollo, saying the creature kept him from filling the cup. Apollo forbids the crow to drink while figs remain unripe. He puts the crow in heaven with the cup and snake as a memorial. Hydra is the snake in this story. [2]
