Hand of the Central One
Alpha Orionis. The name's corruption is one of the most tortured in stellar nomenclature. The original Arabic Yad al-Jawzā' (Hand of the Central One) was misread in medieval manuscripts when the initial yā' was mistaken for a bā', producing Bait al-Jawzā' and eventually Betelgeuse. Allen traces the chain of transliteration errors in detail. The star's dramatic red color made it one of the most discussed stars in all ancient literature.

Orange Betelgeuse occupies Orion's right shoulder. The hunter boasts that he can kill any beast on earth, then dies from a scorpion's sting. Orion's shoulder earns its honors
According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Mars and Mercury; and, to Alvidas, of Mercury, Saturn and Jupiter in good aspect. It gives martial honour, preferment and wealth.
Ptolemy assigns Mars and Mercury to Orion's shoulders, including the right shoulder, Betelgeuse; the other bright stars in the figure receive Jupiter and Saturn. Hephaistio repeats the division with the Greek names Ares and Hermes. [4] [5] Command here requires knowledge of the task. Someone has to understand it well enough to carry it out or direct other people doing it.
Brady centers her reading on personal talents. She reports Ebertin's expectation of luck and lasting fame, with Rigor adding rashness and changeability. [2] In Robson's occupations, skill has working conditions. An engraver needs people who value the finished work; a commander needs authority to direct the job. Read accomplishment in the setting where the person has to sustain it. Praise alone leaves those conditions unresolved.
Manilius describes Orion with alert minds and bodies quick to answer duty. Betelgeuse's armpit name and Ardra

The name starts a little below the shoulder. Allen derives Betelgeuse from Ibt al Jauzah, the Armpit of the Central One, and follows it through spellings such as Bed Elgueze and Beit Algueze. He lists the Arabic shoulder and right-hand titles separately. Robson also begins with the armpit derivation, alongside Bullinger's religious interpretation, the Coming of the Branch. [3] [1] The armpit belongs to the derivation Allen gives; the hand is another name he records for the star.
Allen connects the star's reputation for martial honors and wealth with older kingly names. He reports Sayce and Bosanquet's identification with Gula, possibly including other stars, and Brown's proposal that Kakkab Bar, the Constellation of the King, included Betelgeuse and neighboring stars. [3] Bowen and Rochberg identify the Babylonian Orion as the True Shepherd of Anu. [9] These identifications concern larger celestial figures. Keep the possible inclusion of other stars attached to Allen's report.
In Allen's account of Indian astronomy, Betelgeuse alone forms Ardra, Moist, pictured as a gem and presided over by Rudra, the storm-god. He also records the Sanskrit Bahu, Arm. [3] Ardra belongs to a lunar system with its own image and divinity. Read that lunar station within its own practice.
Betelgeuse enters Cancer in December 2088
Betelgeuse stands at 29°07′ tropical Gemini in 2026, and the next calculated ingress is into Cancer in December 2088. Robson printed 27°38′ Gemini for 1920. [1] For a birth in 2000, use about 28°45′ Gemini. Augurine's calculator uses a conjunction orb of 1°30′ for this star. Check the birth year's position when a planet sits near the edge of that orb.
Precession changes the star's tropical longitude over time. The move into Cancer leaves Betelgeuse on Orion's shoulder, the place Ptolemy assigned Mars and Mercury. [4] A Cancer planet in a future chart can meet the same star that a late-Gemini planet meets today. Keep the constellation's shoulder attribution when checking a chart from either side of the ingress.
Betelgeuse on the shoulder of the boastful hunter
