Antares

Orion sinks below the horizon as the Scorpion that killed him rises into view. Antares glows reddish at the Scorpion's heart, and its name compares it with Mars. The tradition gives Mars the greater share, with some Jupiter, a mixture suited to contention and command. Its determination has the force to sustain a difficult undertaking. Generosity has a place here too, alongside the obstinacy of a quarrel prolonged at great expense. The danger lies in a taste for intensity itself. A contest can remain absorbing after its purpose has been served, until ordinary achievement feels insufficient.

Antares by birth year

On 1 January 2026, Antares stood at ♐ 10°08′ Sagittarius in the tropical zodiac.

It entered Sagittarius in October 1299.

Positions are for 1 January of each year; a star moves about 50 arcseconds a year, so a birth late in the decade sits close to the next row.

From latitudes poleward of 63.5° N it never rises, and from latitudes poleward of 63.5° S it never sets (geometric horizon, refraction ignored).

Why Antares rivals Mars

Allen records rival of Mars or similar to Mars as the usual derivation of Antares, from its reddish color. He also discusses equivalent of Mars and the Scorpion's astrological relationship to the planet. Ptolemy names Antares as the reddish middle star of the three in the Scorpion's body and gives that group Mars with some Jupiter; Hephaistio repeats the mixture as Ares with some Zeus. The emphasis is martial, with Jupiter secondary. ^{[1] [2] [3]}

The Arabic Kalb al 'Akrab and Latin Cor Scorpii both name the Scorpion's Heart in Allen's account. Antares alone formed the Arabic lunar station Al Kalb, which Allen calls fortunate. The Hindu Jyestha, Oldest, and Chinese Sin, Heart, included neighboring stars; Allen reports Brown's interpretation of the Chinese heart as the Azure Dragon's. ^[1]

Read Mars first and the ambition has a contest to engage in; Jupiter gives it scope. Joseph Crane prints both Mars with Jupiter and Mars with Venus for Antares, while Robson reports Alvidas's Jupiter sextile Venus and rejects it as too mild for the star. ^{[8] [5]} With Ptolemy's qualified Mars and Jupiter, the person wants room to exercise authority and is prepared to contend for it. The Anonymous describes independent leaders who remain contentious once they have people to govern. ^{[2] [4]}

How Antares handles authority and affection

With Antares on your Ascendant, taking charge comes readily and opposition is difficult to leave alone. The Anonymous describes readiness for command; Robson gives riches and honor of uncertain duration. On the Midheaven, the Anonymous describes administration of cities or nations, and Robson's culmination entry is unusually favorable. ^{[4] [5]} Authority requires you to hear people who disagree with you. Read how you respond when a colleague's objection delays a decision you are ready to make.

Robson's medical and fatal language is the old predictive register; weigh its conflict and advancement against the whole chart rather than predicting those outcomes. With the Sun, ambition becomes costly when defending your position takes over the work. ^[5] Read with Brady, you keep raising the stakes because ordinary achievement has begun to feel insufficient. A demanding aim gives you work to do even when you have no opponent. ^[6]

With the Moon, Antares is more sociable. Robson includes influential friends and participation in local affairs, with intellectual interests broad enough for religious opinions to change. ^[5] Community involvement absorbs you. Read with Brady, notice when the household's life starts to depend on the next dispute or campaign. Keep enough time for home life to continue while public affairs are heated, including time when the people at home have your attention without having to join the cause. ^[6]

For Mercury, Robson stresses suspicion and wrongful accusations against friends. Brady's Mercury examples are Agatha Christie and Nelson Mandela, with Mercury culminating as Antares rises. These are parans, simultaneous angular relationships. ^{[5] [6]} With Mercury, close attention produces a convincing argument when you remain willing to check your reasoning. Suspicion becomes harder to put down when every answer from a friend becomes another reason to distrust them.

Robson gives Mars quarrels with friends and relatives, but also some prospect of gain. His Venus entry allows ability and effort while treating the person's motives harshly. ^[5] With Mars, count what another round of the contest asks of the people close to you. With Venus, pursuing your own interest puts pressure on the affection or cooperation you want. Read with Brady, easing that pressure gives another person room to answer without having to match your intensity. ^[6]

Robson gives Jupiter religious zeal and advancement through religious institutions, then questions its sincerity. Saturn gets frustration and losses through quarrels or legal affairs. ^[5] With Jupiter, conviction becomes self-justifying when your standing depends on defending it. With Saturn, a dispute consumes resources without improving your position. In consultation, work through a recent decision and what it cost before describing the person as obstinate. Someone who sees the expense clearly has a specific reason to reconsider the next step.

When Antares keeps the fight going

Robson describes obstinacy beside liberality and broad-mindedness. The person who refuses to let a quarrel go is also capable of generosity. Brady's excess test concerns seeking drama for its excitement, even when success requires less intensity. ^{[5] [6]} Before committing more time or money, identify what remains to be achieved. If the original aim is already within reach, finish that work before opening another dispute.

Brady's Joan of Arc example has Mars rising while Antares is at the nadir. Her Mercury examples concern thought and speech; here Mars puts action at the center. Brady also uses Antares as a heliacal rising star at birth, in both apparent and cosmic rising, and allows for success throughout her treatment. ^[6] Keep the planet's activity in view when reading her examples. A Mercury argument and a Mars confrontation require different decisions from the person living them.

Aldebaran rising, Antares setting

The Anonymous of 379 describes Aldebaran rising with Antares opposite at the setting horizon. He gives this arrangement an exceptional reach for fame, then reads Antares at the marriage angle through good fortune and inheritances from women. ^[4] On the Descendant, read opportunity and material support through a relationship. Another person's resources help determine what becomes possible, so the partnership needs attention in its own right.

Robson's Moon entry at Antares includes compound configurations with Mars or Saturn at Aldebaran, expressed in his severe language of violent outcomes. His eye-injury condition instead pairs the Moon at Antares with Mars or Saturn at Regulus. ^[5] Keep those configurations distinct. In a contemporary reading, examine the tension between the Moon's involvement and the demands of the opposing planet. Trace the conflict into the person's home life and identify which demands they have room to reduce.

Antares in a coat of mail

Robson calls Antares the Watcher of the West among the four Persian Royal Stars and places it at the autumnal equinox in 3000 BC. Allen treats its identification with Satevis as probable and records disagreement about the four assignments. ^{[5] [1]} A separate Babylonian example reproduced by Lis Brack-Bernsen locates Jupiter's first appearance relative to Alpha Scorpii, with Antares as the reference for a planet's position. ^[7]

In Magical Influences of Fixed Stars, Robson gives Antares the image of a man in a coat of mail or a scorpion. His talismanic account assigns it understanding and memory, together with protection against spirits. ^[5] In a natal reading, the armor describes readiness for conflict. You may have sound reasons for being prepared. When circumstances allow a more open exchange, give the person in front of you time to speak before preparing your defense.

Locating Antares in a Sagittarius birth chart

Antares entered tropical Sagittarius in October 1299. In 2026 it is at 10°08′ Sagittarius; Robson printed 8°39′ Sagittarius for 1920. ^[5] Augurine's calculator uses a conjunction orb of 1°30′. Precession accounts for the changing tropical degree, so check the conjunction for the birth year. Using the 2026 degree for a much older chart risks including or excluding a planet close to the edge of that orb.

The constellation remains Scorpius. Ptolemy's Mars with some Jupiter describes the named star in the Scorpion's body, and the Sagittarius coordinate gives its place in a tropical chart. ^[2] Read the Sagittarius planet through its sign and house, then add Antares if the contact is close. With Mercury, examine the argument occupying your attention; with the Moon, look at the public affairs that are becoming hard to set aside at home.

Orion's retreat and the Scorpion's red heart

Allen tells how the Scorpion killed Orion and was raised into the sky. Orion still fears it and sinks below the horizon as the Scorpion rises. ^[1]

Antares is the tawny middle star of the three in the Scorpion's body, at its heart. Allen gives rival of Mars or similar to Mars as the usual derivation of Antares, referring to its reddish color. ^{[2] [1]}

In Chinese astronomy, Sin, the Heart, contains Antares and a neighboring star on each side. Allen reports Brown's interpretation of this figure as the heart of the Azure Dragon, one of the four great divisions of the Chinese zodiac. ^[1]

Antares also presides over a celestial court. Sons and courtiers stand nearby as stars, while Antares announces the principles of government to them in the Emperor's Council-hall. Allen preserves this image under the name Ta Who. ^[1]
