See which planets bear witness to each placement, the Ascendant, and the Lot of Fortune. Every testimony is sorted by configuration, nature, sect, and side (overcoming or overcome), and resolves to a bonification, maltreatment, or mixed verdict per point.
What is witnessing in astrology?
In Hellenistic astrology, a planet bears witness to another planet or point when it regards that point by one of the five configurations: conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition. Witnessing is testimony. A benefic that witnesses a placement tends to support it, and a malefic that witnesses it tends to apply pressure.
The Greek term is epimartyria, and it shares a root with martureo, the verb for bearing witness, giving evidence, testifying to what you have seen. That visual sense is the point. The old astrologers conceptualized aspects as the planets being able to see or not see each other, borrowed from Greek optical theory where rays travel between the eye and the thing observed. Even the flat modern word carries it: "aspect" comes from the Latin aspectus, a look. A planet does not just make an aspect. It looks at another point, and on the strength of what it sees it gives testimony for or against.
Whole signs first, degrees second
Configurations are defined first by sign, and only then refined by degree. Two planets are configured by sign when they sit in signs that hold one of the five relationships. The rationale, from Antiochus of Athens through Porphyry, is affinity: sextile signs share gender, square signs share modality but differ in gender, trine signs share element and gender, and the opposition sits across the axis.
The signs a planet cannot see are in aversion, turned away. From any sign, four others share no affinity and so make no configuration. This is why the semisextile and the quincunx were never aspects in this tradition. The calculator treats aversion as a real result in its own right: a malefic in aversion to your significator cannot reach it to obstruct, while a benefic in aversion is a friend who cannot see you waving.
Once a sign-based configuration exists, degree closes the distance. When a planet comes within three degrees of exact, the contact reaches its most intense range, called engagement, or for a conjunction, adherence. The Moon gets a wider thirteen degree range. These windows are the closest the tradition came to the modern idea of orbs. If you want the degree-based picture on its own, the partile aspects and applying and separating aspects calculators cover it.
Right, left, and who has the upper hand
Every planet has a right side and a left side. The configurations it has already passed, the signs earlier in zodiacal order, sit on its right. The ones it is moving toward sit on its left. When two planets are configured by sextile, square, or trine, the one on the right is in the superior position and overcomes the other. The Greek is kathuperteresis, from a word for having the upper hand. The overcoming planet dominates the relationship, for better or worse.
Take Brennan's example. Jupiter in Taurus and Mars in Leo: Jupiter overcomes Mars and can force it to behave better than it otherwise would. Flip it, Mars in Taurus and Jupiter in Leo, and now Mars overcomes Jupiter and drags the same square somewhere worse. Same configuration, opposite verdict, decided entirely by who stands on the right. The superior square is so forceful it has its own name, domination, since the dominating planet sits in the tenth sign from the other. The calculator names the side each witness stands on and flags domination wherever it falls.
Benefic and malefic testimony: bonification and maltreatment
Underneath the configurations is a division of labor. The benefics, Jupiter and Venus, affirm what a planet wants to signify. The malefics, Saturn and Mars, negate it. When a benefic's testimony is strong enough to improve a point's condition, that is bonification. When a malefic's testimony is strong enough to corrupt or block it, that is maltreatment. The two were reconstructed from Antiochus as a matched set of conditions: overcoming, opposition and trine, enclosure, adherence, engagement, striking with a ray, and being ruled by a well-placed or poorly-placed planet. The full picture lives in the bonification and maltreatment calculator; witnessing is the layer of testimony underneath it.
None of this is fixed in strength, and sect is the dial. The malefic contrary to sect, Mars in a day chart or Saturn in a night chart, has the most capacity to harm. The benefic of sect, Jupiter by day or Venus by night, has the most capacity to help. So the same Mars square reads as a serious maltreatment in one chart and a manageable one in another, purely on day or night. The calculator weights every testimony by sect rather than treating Mars as Mars and Saturn as Saturn. Enclosure, where a point is hemmed between the two malefics or the two benefics, is read in full by the besieged planet calculator.
Reception: the condition that can rewrite the verdict
Before you take a maltreatment at face value, check for reception. Reception comes from the guest and host model: the ruler of a sign is the host, and a planet visiting that sign is its guest. When a point is configured to its own domicile lord, host and guest are in contact, and a more supportive relationship forms. So when a planet is being maltreated but sits in the maltreater's own sign, the harm tends to be less severe and more workable than it looks.
Stronger still is mutual reception, two planets each sitting in the other's domicile, supporting each other like family. The calculator flags reception and mutual reception on each testimony so a frightening looking square does not get read out of context.
Witnessing the Lot of Fortune and the lights
This technique earns its keep on the chart's most loaded points. The same testimony logic extends to any significator, including the Sun, the Moon, and the Lot of Fortune. Benefics bearing witness to Fortune and the lights was one of the marks the Hellenistic astrologers read for a flourishing life, the way malefic testimony to those points marked where difficulty gathered. The witnessing report includes the Ascendant and the Lot of Fortune by default for exactly this reason, so you can see who testifies to the parts of the chart that carry the most weight.
Read it as the ancients did: a record of who in the chart is watching, who has the better view, and what each one testifies.
The five configurations
What each kind of testimony carries when one planet bears witness to another.
Conjunction (copresence)
Two planets under one roof.
Two planets in the same sign are copresent, blending their natures whether they sit a degree apart or twenty-nine. A benefic copresent with a point lends it grace; a malefic copresent presses on it, and presses harder still when the contact tightens by degree into an adherence. The early authors hesitated to call copresence a true configuration, since planets in one sign are present together rather than looking at each other, but its effect on condition is real.
Sextile (hexagon)
The gentle, supportive look.
Sextile signs share gender, masculine to masculine or feminine to feminine. Valens read the sextile as the trine's effects gone "dim and weak," positive but lighter. A benefic by sextile supports without the full force of the trine, and a malefic by sextile does no real harm, which is why the sextile rarely turns a point's condition on its own.
Square (tetragon)
The hard, forceful look.
Square signs share modality but differ in gender, and that mismatch is the friction. Porphyry calls the square hard and inharmonious. A malefic overcoming by square is one of the strongest pressures in the chart, so strong it earns its own name, domination. A benefic in a square is powerful and challenging at once: when it has the upper hand it can still force a constructive result.
Trine (triangle)
The most harmonious look.
Trine signs share both element and gender, the deepest affinity of the five. Porphyry calls the trine sympathetic and beneficial, and it is the configuration by which a benefic bonifies most cleanly. A malefic by trine is held to be incapable of doing harm, so a trine from Mars or Saturn reads as a calmer, more cooperative contact than its body would suggest.
Opposition (diameter)
The adversarial look.
Opposing signs share modality and gender but sit at opposite ends of the year. Porphyry calls the opposition adversarial, and it is the configuration by which the malefics do their most difficult work. A benefic by opposition is less positive than by trine, supportive rather than transforming. Neither planet overcomes the other across an opposition; they meet as equals on the axis.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean when a planet bears witness?
It means the planet regards another planet or point by one of the five configurations (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition) and gives testimony about it. A benefic witness lends support; a malefic witness applies pressure. The Greek term, epimartyria, is built on the verb for bearing witness, and the planets were imagined as actually seeing each other.
Is witnessing the same as a regular aspect?
It is the older and fuller version of the same idea. Modern aspects are degree-based lines within tight orbs. Witnessing starts from whole signs, asks whether two planets can see each other at all, then refines by degree. Same family, more information.
What is the difference between overcoming and hurling a ray?
Both describe direction. A planet overcomes when it sits on the right, in the superior position, and dominates a sextile, square, or trine. A planet hurls or strikes with a ray when it fires a ray backward in the order of signs, often the inferior planet striking the one above it. Overcoming is about having the upper hand; striking with a ray is about reaching across a distance.
Does witnessing use orbs or whole signs?
Whole signs first. Two planets are configured as soon as they occupy signs that hold one of the five relationships, regardless of degree. Degree then intensifies it: applying within three degrees (thirteen for the Moon) is the most acute range, the nearest the tradition came to orbs.
How does sect change who bonifies or maltreats?
Sect sets the intensity. In a day chart Jupiter is the strongest helper and Mars the most cutting malefic; in a night chart Venus helps most and Saturn cuts deepest. The same configuration can read as a serious maltreatment or a mild one depending on whether the chart is diurnal or nocturnal.
How does a benefic witnessing the Lot of Fortune affect the chart?
Benefic testimony to the Lot of Fortune, and to the Sun and Moon, was read as a sign of a more favorable and flourishing life, while malefic testimony to those points marked where difficulty gathered. Because Fortune and the lights carry so much weight, the witnessing report includes them by default.
