Free Sect Calculator
Discover whether you have a day chart or night chart, identify your sect light, and find your most supportive and most challenging planets.
What this calculator tells you
The sect calculator determines whether you have a day chart or night chart, identifies your sect light (Sun or Moon), and ranks every traditional planet from most supportive to most challenging. It also analyzes Mercury's oriental or occidental status and computes a three-level hayz analysis showing how each planet is supported or strained by the chart conditions.
This is a traditional condition framework, not a guarantee of ease, harm, health, wealth, or outcome. For the full conceptual framework, see our complete guide to sect in astrology.
How to use your sect results
Your benefic of sect shows where growth and ease have more support in the traditional condition model. Pay attention to the houses it rules and occupies. Your malefic out of sect marks where friction concentrates and needs more care. Awareness of these areas helps you work with the symbolism consciously rather than treating it as a verdict. Learn the full four-tier ranking in our guide to benefics and malefics by sect.
Pair your sect analysis with your birth chart to see house placements, or explore how sect interacts with profection years and firdaria for timing techniques.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is sect in astrology?
Sect is a Hellenistic astrology concept that divides charts into two types, day (diurnal) and night (nocturnal), based on whether the Sun was above or below the horizon at birth. It determines which planets are your greatest benefic and greatest challenge, making it one of the most important factors in traditional chart interpretation.
How do I know if I have a day chart or night chart?
If the Sun was above the horizon (in houses 7-12) when you were born, you have a day chart. If it was below (houses 1-6), you have a night chart. This requires an accurate birth time. Enter your birth data in the calculator above and we'll determine it for you.
What is a sect light?
The sect light is the luminary (Sun or Moon) that leads your chart. In a day chart, the Sun is your sect light, and solar themes like purpose, visibility, and conscious will guide the chart. In a night chart, the Moon is your sect light, and lunar themes like intuition, emotional wisdom, and inner rhythms take the lead.
What does 'out of sect' mean?
A planet is 'out of sect' when it belongs to the opposite team from your chart type. For example, Mars is a nocturnal planet, so in a day chart, it's out of sect and its difficult qualities are amplified. The malefic out of sect (Mars in day charts, Saturn in night charts) is traditionally considered the most challenging planet in the chart.
How does sect determine my best and worst planets?
Sect creates a four-tier ranking: (1) the benefic of sect is your greatest ally (Jupiter in day charts, Venus in night charts), (2) the benefic out of sect still helps but with less force, (3) the malefic in sect challenges you constructively, and (4) the malefic out of sect is your greatest challenge. This ranking applies to the traditional planets only: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, and Venus.
Is having a malefic out of sect bad?
Not inherently. Every chart has a malefic out of sect; it simply shows where challenges concentrate. If that planet is in its own domicile or exaltation, or receives supportive aspects from benefics, its difficulty is mitigated. Awareness is the most powerful tool: knowing which planet carries the most friction helps you work with it consciously rather than being blindsided.
Does sect matter in modern astrology?
Sect was developed in the Hellenistic era (2nd century BCE) and fell out of use for centuries. It has been revived by modern traditional astrologers like Chris Brennan and is now widely considered essential for accurate chart interpretation. Many modern practitioners who initially dismissed it report that adding sect analysis significantly improves the accuracy of their readings.
Why does the calculator require my birth time?
Sect depends entirely on whether the Sun was above or below the horizon at your birth, which requires knowing your birth time and location. An approximate time works for most births, but if you were born near sunrise or sunset, even a few minutes' difference could flip your chart from day to night. For the most accurate results, use the time from your birth certificate.
