You have a day chart when the Sun sat above the horizon at the moment you were born, and a night chart when it sat below. Above the horizon means the upper half of the wheel, houses 7 through 12. Below means houses 1 through 6. Whether the Sun had cleared the horizon is the whole test.

That single fact reorganizes the chart. It decides which luminary leads, which benefic carries the most weight, and which malefic asks for the most care. The two chart types split the traditional planets into different roles.

Birth time is what makes the call reliable. A chart cast for noon and one cast for midnight sit on opposite sides of the horizon, so a guessed time can flip the result. The margin is tightest near dawn and dusk, when the Sun rides close to the Ascendant or Descendant and a few minutes decide the sect. Sect does more than label a chart. It ranks the four traditional non-luminary planets from most supportive to most demanding, and that ranking is one of the first things a traditional astrologer reads.

• Greatest benefic. Jupiter in a day chart, Venus at night. The planet that works with full constructive force, where ease and growth arrive most readily.
• Supporting benefic. The other benefic. Still helpful, though its gifts take more conscious effort to reach.
• Constructive challenge. The malefic in sect, Saturn by day and Mars by night. Difficulty of the productive kind, the sort that builds discipline and staying power over time.
• Greatest challenge. The malefic out of sect, Mars by day and Saturn at night. The chart's hardest energy, arriving with less tempering, and the placement worth understanding most carefully.

The sect light is the luminary that leads the chart. In a day chart that's the Sun, and solar themes of purpose and visibility set the agenda. In a night chart it's the Moon, and lunar themes of instinct and emotional timing take the lead. The sect light is often the steadier of the two lights to lean on, since it operates on home ground.

Mercury sits apart from the day and night split. It belongs to whichever team it rises with. Oriental Mercury, which rises ahead of the Sun, takes a diurnal, quick-to-speak cast, while occidental Mercury, which sets after the Sun, takes a nocturnal, reflective cast. Hayz (sometimes spelled haiz) is the traditional name for a planet at maximum contentment. Strictly, it's an all-or-nothing condition: a planet earns it only when three separate agreements line up at once. The calculator breaks those three into levels so you can see how close each planet comes, which is a modern teaching aid rather than the classical yes-or-no verdict.

• Chart sect. The planet is on the right team for the chart type. Diurnal planets (Sun, Jupiter, Saturn) qualify in a day chart; nocturnal planets (Moon, Venus, Mars) qualify at night.
• Sign gender. The planet sits in a sign that matches its nature. Diurnal planets prefer the masculine signs (fire and air); nocturnal planets prefer the feminine signs (earth and water).
• Hemisphere. The planet sits in the favored half of the chart. Diurnal planets prefer the day half, above the horizon in houses 7 through 12; nocturnal planets prefer the night half, houses 1 through 6, following the whole sign convention.

A planet meeting all three is in hayz and about as comfortable as its placement allows. One meeting none is working against the grain at every level. Most planets land somewhere between.

Picture someone born in Chicago at 11:40pm. The Sun is well below the horizon, so this is a night chart. The Moon becomes the sect light, and the chart runs on lunar logic: instinct and timing ahead of declared intention.

On the nocturnal team, Venus is the greatest benefic. The houses Venus rules and occupies are where support tends to gather, so relationships and the things this person values can become a genuine resource. Mars, also nocturnal, is the constructive challenge: its drive is demanding but usable, the kind of pressure that gets things done.

Saturn tells the other half of the story. As a diurnal planet in a night chart, it's out of sect and carries the greatest challenge. Its restrictions ask for more patience, and a Saturn return here reads as heavier work than the same return in a day chart.
