Fundamentals
Sect Light in Astrology: Sun vs Moon Leadership
The sect light is the luminary (Sun or Moon) that leads your chart. In a day chart, the Sun is your sect light and solar themes guide your path. In a night chart, the Moon takes the lead and lunar themes become primary.

What the sect light does
The sect light is the luminary that carries the most weight in your chart. It's not that the other luminary doesn't matter; both Sun and Moon are always significant. But the sect light has a kind of 'home court advantage,' operating with more natural authority and setting the tonal direction of the chart.
This has practical implications. Day chart natives (Sun as sect light) often lead with purpose, clarity, and conscious direction. Night chart natives (Moon as sect light) often lead with emotional intelligence, intuition, and an attunement to rhythm and timing.
Sect light and the Lots
The sect light also affects the calculation of the Lot of Fortune and Lot of Spirit, two important calculated points in Hellenistic astrology. The formulas reverse depending on whether you have a day or night chart, changing which houses these Lots fall in and therefore which areas of life they activate.
In a day chart, the Lot of Fortune = Ascendant + Moon − Sun. In a night chart, the formula reverses: Ascendant + Sun − Moon. This reversal is one of the most concrete ways sect shows up in chart calculation, not just interpretation.
