Source boundary: a Venus return is an exact timing calculation and a symbolic return chart. It can frame Venus topics (love, money, beauty, values) for an eleven-month cycle, but it does not predict marriages, breakups, financial windfalls, medical diagnoses, or relationship outcomes on its own.
What is a Venus return?
A Venus return is the exact moment transiting Venus crosses back over the longitude it held when you were born. Astrologers cast a chart for that moment and read it as a snapshot of the year's love, money, beauty, and value themes. It happens roughly every eleven months, but not on the same date each year.
The drift is the part most calculators don't explain. Venus orbits the Sun every 225 days, but from Earth we don't see the orbit cleanly. We see Venus pull ahead of the Sun as the evening star, stop, retrograde, pass through inferior conjunction, then come up as the morning star. That cycle (the synodic cycle) runs 584 days. Your natal Venus return depends on where Venus is in that cycle relative to your birth, so the calendar date of your return shifts by roughly a month each year. Some years two months. Once every eight years, the date snaps back close to the same day you had eight years ago. That's the Venus pentagram, and it's the reason astrologers treat Venus returns as a long, slow rhythm rather than a strict annual beat.
The calculator above pulls your next three returns at once because the next one is only half the story. Looking at three lets you spot when a retrograde will fold the cycle into a tight 120-day cluster, which is the year where Venus actually has something to say.
How Often Does a Venus Return Happen?
Eleven months on average. Anywhere from eight to eighteen months in practice.
Pick a real case. If you were born with natal Venus at 12° Aries, your returns might land in May 2026, then April 2027, then March 2028. Each year drifts a few weeks earlier. Until Venus retrogrades through 12° Aries (which happens roughly every eight years for that specific degree), at which point you get three returns inside 120 days, then a long quiet stretch of fourteen or fifteen months before the next standalone return.
This irregularity is the single biggest difference between Venus returns and solar returns. Your solar return always sits within a day of your birthday. Your Venus return wanders across the calendar. People who plan their year by their solar return often miss the Venus return entirely because they aren't watching for it. The drift means a Venus return chart can fall in February one year and August the next, and if you're not tracking it, you'll only notice the shift in your love life or finances in hindsight.
That's the strongest practical case for keeping the chart on hand. Run it now, run it next year, watch the date move.
Three Venus Returns in One Year: How Retrograde Changes the Math
Venus retrogrades about every nineteen months, for roughly forty days at a stretch. When she retrogrades across the degree your natal Venus occupies, you get three crossings instead of one: direct, retrograde, then direct again. The three are usually spaced about sixty days apart.
What do you do with three charts?
Hellenistic and modern astrological tradition converge here. Read the last of the three as the operative chart for the cycle ahead. The first chart is an opening of the theme. The retrograde return is the reassessment, the meeting with someone from before, the going-back-over what you thought was settled. The third return is the chart that holds for the next year of Venus matters.
Practitioners differ on how much weight to give the first two. Robert Hand and Bernadette Brady both argue the retrograde return is more diagnostic than predictive, showing you what is being reviewed rather than what is being launched. That tracks with experience: people getting their retrograde Venus return often describe it as a strange in-between period where old contacts surface, old purchases get re-examined, old aesthetic choices get questioned. The post-retrograde return is where new ground breaks.
A live example for 2026: Venus retrogrades from October 3 to November 13, starting at about 8° Scorpio and walking backward through Scorpio into late Libra, ending at about 22° Libra. If your natal Venus is between 22° Libra and 8° Scorpio, the calculator above will flag three return dates spaced about sixty days apart, the first in late summer 2026 and the third in early 2027. Read the third.
What to Look For Once You Cast the Chart
The calculator gives you the return date, Venus degree, retrograde status, and synodic phase. If you cast a full Venus return chart from that moment, this six-item checklist is worth keeping nearby. Items four and five are where most surface-level guides stop short, and where the chart starts telling you something specific.
- The Ascendant of the return chart and its ruler. The Ascendant sets the keynote of the year. Where the ruling planet of that Ascendant sits, what condition it is in (essential dignity, retrograde, combustion, aspects from malefics), tells you whether the keynote unfolds smoothly or against friction.
- Venus on the angles. Venus within five degrees of the Ascendant, Midheaven, IC, or Descendant means the year arrives loudly in love, public reputation, home, or partnership. Closer to the angle, louder. Venus on the Midheaven of the return year is often the chart attached to public visibility shifts, professional recognition, or a notable creative output.
- Aspects from natal personal planets to return-chart Venus. Look at where natal Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn fall relative to the return Venus position. Orbs under two degrees do the most work. A natal Saturn within one degree of return Venus is a year of slowness and structure around Venus topics. A natal Mars at the same orb is the opposite (heat, urgency, friction in relationships).
- The sect condition of Venus at the return moment. Venus is the nocturnal benefic. If you were born at night and Venus is above the horizon when the return fires, she is in her preferred mode. Day-born with Venus below the horizon, same. Out of sect (night-born with Venus below or day-born with Venus above) softens her support and shifts her tone. Check this against your natal sect using the sect calculator.
- The synodic phase at the return moment. Is Venus a morning star (Phosphorus, rising before the Sun) or evening star (Hesperus, setting after the Sun) when the return fires? Morning Venus returns lean toward initiation, new connections, the early phase of attraction. Evening Venus returns lean toward consolidation, established bonds, the finalizing phase. The Hellenistic distinction is older than most modern interpretations of return charts and it sharpens the reading considerably. See the Phosphorus or Hesperus calculator for the synodic phase context.
- Eclipse proximity. A return that lands within two weeks of a solar or lunar eclipse gets amplified. Venus themes for that year become a fulcrum the rest of the chart pivots around, rather than a quiet sub-current.
If you read for clients, items 4 and 5 are the ones that make your reading sound specific. Anyone can describe Venus on the Descendant. Few people can tell you whether your Phosphorus or Hesperus Venus is on that Descendant, and what that means for the year's relational tone.
Venus Return vs Solar Return: Which One Matters More?
Neither replaces the other. They answer different questions.
The solar return is the year's storyline. It runs from your birthday to your birthday and shows the chapter ahead in general terms (career, family, identity, spiritual themes, the lot). The Venus return is the love-and-money sub-chapter inside that storyline. It runs from one Venus return to the next, on whatever date Venus chooses.
Used together, they layer. Imagine someone whose solar return puts Saturn in the seventh house. The whole year is going to have a partnership-and-structure theme. Six weeks later their Venus return fires with Venus retrograde and conjunct that same natal Saturn. Now you know the specific shape: the partnership theme is going to land as a slow conversation about commitment, often involving someone from earlier in their life, often centered on what they value versus what they have been told they should value. Two charts, one story.
The mistake is using the Venus return as a standalone prediction. The solar return frames the year. The Venus return sharpens the part of the year that is specifically Venus-shaped.
Does Location Matter? Relocation and Venus Returns
Two schools.
School A casts the return for your birth location every year. The angles stay anchored to where you started. The chart describes the inner shape of the cycle without regard to where you are currently living.
School B casts it for where you actually are at the return moment. The angles move to your current latitude and longitude. Houses Venus occupies and planets sitting on angles can change dramatically with location.
Modern predictive astrologers tend toward School B, because the angles of a return chart describe where the year unfolds, and the year unfolds wherever you actually live. Running both charts and comparing is the most rigorous approach for a major year. The calculator above does not cast a relocated return chart yet. Use the return date it gives you as the exact moment to compare birth-location and current-location charts in a dedicated chart tool.
For now, you can compare the two manually: the date and Venus sign and degree stay the same, only the house Venus occupies and the planets sitting on the angles change with location. If your birth-location return puts Venus in the twelfth house and a current-location reading puts her on the Midheaven, that contrast itself is the reading.
A caveat worth saying clearly. If you travel to a specific city for the return moment hoping to “tune” the chart by being there briefly, the relocation read of that single moment does not override where you actually spend the year. The chart describes a year, not an hour. Use the location you will inhabit, not the location of the return moment alone.
Venus Retrograde 2026: The Cycle to Watch
Venus retrogrades once in 2026, from October 3 to November 13. The retrograde station sits at about 8° Scorpio. Venus then walks backward through early Scorpio, crosses the Libra-Scorpio boundary near October 24 (the moment of inferior conjunction with the Sun), and continues retrograde into late Libra. The direct station sits at about 22° Libra.
If your natal Venus is between 22° Libra and 8° Scorpio (a roughly 16° arc), you will see three return dates flagged in the panel above for this cycle. The first lands in late summer 2026, when transiting Venus first reaches your natal Venus moving direct. The second fires in October, during the retrograde, often with notable revisits or backward-looking themes. The third closes in early 2027, when Venus returns to your natal position moving direct again. If you cast charts for the three passes, that third chart is the one to read for the cycle ahead.
The location of this retrograde matters. The sweep starts in Scorpio (where Venus is in detriment, opposite her Taurus home) and ends in Libra (where Venus is in domicile). That mixed-dignity arc is unusual and gives the cycle a layered tone: the Scorpio half leans toward depth, intimacy, debt, shared resources, the difficult truths under a relationship; the Libra half leans toward repair, restoration of balance, the diplomatic work of putting things back together. People with personal planets in this arc feel the cycle most directly, whether or not they have a Venus return inside it.
The next Venus retrograde after this one falls in 2028. Returns landing between November 2026 and early 2028 will be standalone single-return years, the calm rhythm before the next cluster.
Venus Return and Medical Astrology
Venus traditionally rules the kidneys, throat, and ovaries. Modern medical astrologers added the skin, thyroid, parathyroid, and thymus to her territory. The link runs through Venus's classical rulerships of Taurus (the throat) and Libra (the kidneys, the body's filter and balance organ).
Practitioners who watch the Venus return chart for health themes look at hard aspects to Venus (squares and oppositions from Mars or Saturn) as windows worth paying attention to those body systems. A Venus return with Mars square Venus within one degree might correlate with a year of inflammation themes in Venus-ruled areas (throat infections, skin flare-ups, kidney stress). A Venus return with Saturn opposite Venus might read as a year of structural restriction in those systems (thyroid sluggishness, dehydration, mineral imbalance).
Read it as one signal in a larger picture. The Venus return chart shows where the year emphasizes Venus-ruled systems. It does not diagnose anything. Most years, the read is mild (“extra hydration for the kidneys this cycle,” “be careful with throat strain during travel”). Some years it is nothing notable at all.
This is educational context, not medical advice. Any persistent symptom warrants evaluation by a clinician. Medical astrology is most useful as a complement to ordinary preventive care, not a replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Venus return chart?
A Venus return chart is the chart cast for the exact moment transiting Venus returns to the zodiacal longitude it held at your birth. Astrologers read it as a cycle snapshot of love, money, beauty, and what you value. The calculator above gives you the exact return dates, retrograde grouping, natal Venus context, and synodic phase tags; it does not generate a full return chart yet.
How often does a Venus return happen?
About every eleven months on average, with gaps anywhere from eight to eighteen months. Venus's apparent motion is irregular, so unlike solar returns (which always land near your birthday), Venus returns drift across the calendar year and can fall in any month.
Can I have three Venus returns in one year?
Yes, when Venus retrogrades across the degree of your natal Venus. You get three crossings (direct, retrograde, direct again), usually spaced about sixty days apart. The calculator above flags this automatically and shows all three dates.
Which Venus return chart do I read during a retrograde year?
If you cast charts for all three passes, astrological tradition reads the final (third) chart as the operative one for the cycle ahead. The first two are introductions. The retrograde return often shows up as revisits, reassessments, or people from your past surfacing again.
Is a Venus return the same as a solar return?
No. A solar return is cast when the transiting Sun returns to its natal position (annual, near your birthday). A Venus return is cast when transiting Venus returns to natal Venus (annual, on a shifting date). Use the solar return for the year's storyline and the Venus return for the love-and-money sub-chapter inside it.
Does my Venus return chart change if I move?
Venus's position by sign and degree stays the same. In a full return chart, the houses and angles change with your location. Most modern astrologers cast the return for current location, because the angles describe where the cycle actually unfolds. Use the date from this calculator if you want to compare birth-location and current-location charts elsewhere.
How long does the Venus return influence last?
Until the next Venus return, typically eleven months later. During retrograde cycles, the influence period covers the full span of all three crossings (roughly four to six months) before settling back into the standard eleven-month rhythm.
What if Venus is retrograde during my return?
The themes turn inward and backward. Expect reassessment of values, encounters with people from prior chapters, or a slower pace on Venus matters. Important commitments usually hold for the post-retrograde return chart rather than the retrograde one.
Is the Venus return chart used in medical astrology?
Some practitioners read it for emphasis on Venus-ruled body systems (kidneys, throat, skin, thyroid). Treat it as one signal among many, not a diagnosis. Any persistent symptom should be evaluated by a clinician.
Can a Venus return fall on my birthday?
Only when your natal Sun and Venus sit very close together (within about half a degree), which is uncommon. Most birth charts have a Venus that's already drifted to a different zodiac longitude than the Sun, so the Venus return lands on a different calendar date.
