Meaning

Bear Guard, Bear Watcher

Alpha Boötis. From the Greek ἄρκτος (arktos, bear) and οὖρος (ouros, guard or watcher). So named for its position closely following Ursa Major across the sky. One of the earliest star names in recorded literature, mentioned by Homer, Hesiod, and in the Book of Job. Its heliacal rising marked the beginning of autumn in Greece. Allen devotes extensive commentary to its ancient importance in agriculture and navigation.

Golden-yellow Arcturus stands on Boötes's left knee, behind the Bear. In one story, the figure is Arcas pursuing his transformed mother Callisto, until Jupiter lifts them both into heaven to prevent him from killing her. The Bear Guard's astrology concerns initiative and the trust placed in someone who takes responsibility. Keepers of royal and temple wealth appear in its readings; the newer theme is the impulse to find a better way of doing things. Independence here includes acting on another person's behalf. Confidence can sustain patient leadership, and authority over decisions can turn controlling when others disagree.

Someone has to be trusted with the king's money. Manilius and Firmicus give that responsibility to people born with Arcturus rising; Robson later puts them in government office or a position of trust in a corporation. Brady's pathfinder adds the initiative to change how things are done. [5] [6] [7] [8] With Arcturus, look for the person others trust to make a consequential decision, whether they own the business or answer to someone else. Taking responsibility includes deciding when to act without waiting for instructions.

Ptolemy assigns Arcturus Jupiter and Mars, making an exception to the Mercury and Saturn nature he gives the other stars of Boötes. Hephaistio repeats the distinction. [2] [4] The Anonymous of 379 describes authority with a contentious side. [3] Being capable enough to lead leaves you with choices about how to use the position. Notice what you do when someone questions a decision you had the authority to make.

Arcturus by birth year

On 1 January 2026, Arcturus stood at 24°36Libra in the tropical zodiac.

It has been in Libra since before the year 1000 and stays there past 2400.

Positions are for 1 January of each year; a star moves about 50 arcseconds a year, so a birth late in the decade sits close to the next row.

Arcturus and custody of the king's money

Manilius describes people born with Arcturus rising as keepers of royal wealth and temple finances. He names ministers of state and guardians of the people, but also stewards managing another person's house. Firmicus adds the ability to keep a friend's secrets in faithful silence. His account ranges from custody of a royal or temple treasury to work as a royal doorkeeper when malefics are in aspect. [5] [6]

At work, begin with who relies on you and what you have been allowed to decide. A corporate appointment fits Arcturus as readily as an independent venture. Someone gives you access to money and expects you to exercise judgment on their behalf. You might have considerable authority while still answering to a board or a client. Permission to spend requires attention to whose money it is and what they expect from you.

The Anonymous of 379 includes commanders and administrators in his Jupiter and Mars group, with controlling or contentious conduct among its possibilities. [3] A trusted adviser who is promoted also gains the power to compel people to act. The discretion Firmicus describes matters even more when someone else's affairs are in your hands. [6] Leave room for the person affected by a decision to challenge it, especially when you are certain you know what should happen.

The Bear Guard and Arcturus in Job

A golden-yellow star situated on the left knee of Bootes. From Arktouros, the Bear Guard. Also called Arctophilax, the Bear Watcher ; and Alchameth, Azimech, and other variants of Al Simak, the Lofty One.
Vivian Robson, The Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology (1923), entry 26, Notes[7]

Bear Guard has named more than this star. Allen traces its early use to Hesiod and explains that writers sometimes used Arcturus for Boötes as well as for its bright star, Alpha Boötis. The Arcturus in the Book of Job names Ursa Major in Allen's account; he approves the Revised Version's translation as the Bear. [1] Check which part of the sky an older writer means before applying the name to a chart.

The Arabic Al Simak al Ramih is the Lofty Lance-bearer in Allen's discussion, though he records disagreement about the meaning of Simak. He also describes changing placements in drawings of Boötes, from the breast or girdle to the knees and tunic's fringe. [1]

Arcturus from patient work to a position of trust

According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Mars and Jupiter, but Alvidas substitutes Venus and Mercury conjoined. It gives riches, honours, high renown, self-determination and prosperity by navigation and voyages.
Vivian Robson, The Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology (1923), entry 26, Influence[7]

With the Sun, keep working on the change you want to make after the first proposal meets with little response. Robson emphasizes slow, patient work and favorable dealings with the public or lawyers; Brady emphasizes initiative. [7] [8] Other people need time to trust a different way of working. Persistence includes doing the work long enough for them to see how it holds up.

Sober, industrious, popular, inclined to be religious, somewhat extravagant but well-off, help through friends, holds position of trust in large company or corporation, or receives promotion under direction, favourable for health and domestic affairs.
Vivian Robson, The Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology, entry 26, With Mercury[7]

With Mercury, colleagues come to you for advice and increasingly leave decisions with you. Robson describes corporate trust and promotion. [7] Read this as a tendency toward responsibility earned through daily work, weighed against Mercury's condition in the chart. The treasury keeper has a recognizable modern counterpart in someone authorized to act for an organization. Notice whether a larger title has come with more discretion or simply more work to do.

New friends, business success, good judgment, domestic harmony.
Vivian Robson, The Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology, entry 26, With Moon[7]

With the Moon, good judgment extends to the people you spend time with and the business you do together. Robson's Venus list also emphasizes popularity and help from friends, with some friendships proving false. [7] Brady's Mary Shelley example includes Arcturus rising with Venus and culminating as the Moon rose. [8] With either planet, friends make room for your initiative. A project that develops through their support also depends on your judgment about whom to trust.

Robson gives Mars considerable gain but difficulty saving because of extravagance. With Jupiter, he names legal or Church affairs and foreign business or shipping. With Saturn, he favors business judgment and gain while describing selfishness or meanness. [7] For Mars, compare what you earn with what remains after spending. For Jupiter, locate the work that gives you influence. With Saturn, notice who in the household or business bears the cost of your financial caution.

When Arcturus rises at birth, Robson gives good fortune with cares arising from personal folly. When it culminates, he names government office and substantial profit or reputation. The Anonymous of 379 also reads these angular positions through leadership and command. [7] [3] For an Ascendant longitude conjunction, check the geometry; at about 31° north of the ecliptic, Arcturus need not actually be rising. Read the Ascendant through choices you initiate and the Midheaven through public responsibilities. At the Midheaven, check who relies on the decisions your position allows you to make.

Arcturus's pathfinder needs other people

Brady describes someone who takes the first step toward another way of living or doing something, then leads others along that path. Her examples include Mary Shelley and Mao, whose Mars she describes setting with Arcturus. [8] They share initiative in her account, despite their different lives and purposes. Taking the first step says little by itself about what others are being asked to follow.

Brady begins with finding a better way of doing something. [8] Name the change you are trying to make, then check how much agreement it has from the people involved. The Anonymous's contentious commander and Firmicus's trusted keeper both have authority over other people's affairs. [3] [6] When your proposed improvement changes their work, give them room to answer before treating their participation as settled.

Arcturus in the sailor's calendar

Arcturus stands at 24°36′ tropical Libra in 2026, about 31° north of the ecliptic. Robson gives 23°7′ Libra in 1920. [7] Both place it in Libra, but a birth chart uses the degree for its own date. Its distance north of the zodiac means the Libra degree describes its projected longitude rather than a star lying among the planets. Augurine's calculator uses a 1° conjunction orb for Arcturus.

For classical sailors, the star's seasonal risings had immediate financial consequences. Allen recounts an Athenian shipping loan whose interest increased if the vessel returned after the stipulated Arcturus season. He connects that concern with feared weather; Robson's separate weather entries likewise name winds and storms. [1] [7] The borrower faced both the weather and the cost of returning late.

Arcturus behind Callisto's Bear

Arcas is hunting when he comes upon a bear and pursues her into Jupiter's temple. He does not recognize his mother Callisto, whom Juno has transformed. Killing her there would also cost him his life at the hands of the priests. Jupiter takes pity on them and lifts them both into heaven before either can be killed. In Robson's legend, Boötes is the son still following the Bear, with golden-yellow Arcturus, the Bear Guard, in his figure. [7]

According to another account Bootes is Icarius, who was killed by some shepherds he had made drunk with a flagon of wine given him by Bacchus.
Vivian Robson, The Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology (1923), Boötes, Legend[7]

Icarius leaves a grieving daughter, Erigone, and the family's hound. Their grief moves Jupiter to take the family into heaven together. He gives the father a place as Boötes and the daughter a place as Virgo. The hound joins them as Canis Minor. [7]

Natal Conjunctions

Find your conjunctions →

Arcturus Conjunct Sun

You keep working on a proposed change through months when few people recognize its value. Robson favors public dealings and legal affairs, with success reached slowly. Brady's pathfinder directs that persistence toward improving how something is done. A project that has survived that slow beginning gives people something to assess. Your initiative becomes more persuasive when people can see both the proposed improvement and your willingness to carry it through.

Arcturus Conjunct Moon

The people at home know how you make decisions in ordinary circumstances. Robson names new friends and business success alongside harmony at home. People who trust your instincts may be willing to act on a proposal you have considered together. A project may develop because your household or friends help with its costs or daily work. Familiar relationships can provide enough steadiness for you to try a different way of doing something.

Arcturus Conjunct Mercury

Being authorized to act for an organization is central to Robson's account. He names a position of trust in a large company and promotion under someone else's direction, with assistance from friends. The working reading concerns advice that colleagues use and decisions they allow you to make. Independent judgment can develop inside an institution. Look at whether increased responsibility gives you the discretion to improve the work.

Arcturus Conjunct Venus

A friend who contributes to the costs gives your independent undertaking a chance to begin. Robson describes popularity and gifts or favors from friends, with some friendships proving false. Their help has a place in the reading alongside your own initiative. A generous introduction or shared resource may matter more than agreement with everything you propose. The strongest relationships allow affection and judgment about resources to coexist as you decide what to do together.

Arcturus Conjunct Mars

Earning well and keeping the proceeds are separate concerns here. Robson describes considerable gains alongside spending that prevents saving, with friends and social popularity in the same entry. The cost of acting on your own initiative deserves a place in the reading. An ambitious undertaking can attract support and still consume everything it earns. What remains after the spending determines how much of the work you can continue.

Arcturus Conjunct Jupiter

Robson places influence in law or religious institutions, and also names foreign business and shipping. He includes hypocrisy beside the favorable prospects. The reading concerns how closely an influential person's conduct matches the principles they ask others to accept. A larger appointment gives your judgment wider consequences. Look for a role where you can exercise initiative and explain how the decisions serve those who rely on you.

Arcturus Conjunct Saturn

Financial caution can support a business while putting strain on the people closest to it. Robson combines shrewd judgment and favorable gains with selfishness or meanness, and allows difficulty in early married life. The terms on which you share resources deserve close attention. Protecting a reserve and meeting household needs put competing demands on the same funds. The strain shows where those sharing the money understand its purpose differently.

Arcturus Conjunct Uranus

Quick buying and selling receives an unusually specific place in Robson's reading. He also describes collections of antiques and an official role in a club or society, with gains through friends. This suggests initiative exercised through specialist knowledge and social contacts. You may recognize the value of something others have passed over. Someone entrusting a purchase to you needs your knowledge of the subject and a decision made in time.

Arcturus Conjunct Neptune

A partner's advice may be especially valuable when your business judgment keeps changing direction. Robson pairs ingenuity with losses through changeability, then emphasizes support through partnership and reliance on a spouse's counsel. The choice between competing possibilities is where that counsel matters. A trusted person can help you test an idea before you commit resources. The proposal needs enough consistency for you and a partner to know what you are committing to.

Arcturus Conjunct Pluto

When others entrust you with shared resources, the limits of your authority matter from the start. Extend Arcturus's established concern with entrusted responsibility to Pluto's pressure for consequential change. The reading asks what you can alter on another person's behalf and where their consent remains necessary. Reorganizing a business or shared undertaking may reveal how much confidence people place in you. That trust is strongest when the terms of your authority stay clear.

Arcturus Conjunct North Node

You may be ready to take responsibility for an improvement you have wanted for some time. The starting point is Arcturus's concern with initiative that affects other people. You may be learning to move from private dissatisfaction toward a proposal others can discuss and use. Consider where you need greater discretion and what preparation would justify it. A next step needs a real decision attached to it and someone affected by how you decide.

Arcturus Conjunct Ascendant

An opportunity to act for yourself puts your judgment to a test. Robson pairs rising Arcturus with good fortune and anxieties arising from personal folly; the Anonymous of 379 includes command and contention. A longitude conjunction to the Ascendant differs from Arcturus actually rising because the star lies well north of the ecliptic. The choices you readily make for yourself belong beside their consequences for the people affected by them.

Arcturus Conjunct Midheaven

Public responsibility has strong support in this reading. Robson names government office and substantial profit or reputation when Arcturus culminates, while the Anonymous of 379 includes administrators and commanders. Brady adds the initiative to introduce another way of doing things. The appointment needs to permit some discretion if you are to change how the work is done. The promising appointment gives you enough authority to make an improvement and clear responsibility for its consequences.

Setting

Helping another person assume responsibility may become more satisfying as you grow older. Give them room to exercise their judgment while drawing on your experience.

At the Nadir

You develop a principle for work others continue, away from public attention. Its lasting value depends on how people can apply it.

Arcturus in Paran with Saturn

Culminating

An established role can give you authority to revise procedures others depend on. At the height of work, consistency matters alongside your proposed improvement.

Setting

Transferring responsibility in later life tests how well your methods support someone else. They need an arrangement with room for necessary changes.

At the Nadir

Years of quiet use test the structures you leave behind. An improvement lasts when others can maintain the way of working without you.

Arcturus in Paran with Ascendant

Setting

Taking initiative requires negotiation with a partner as you grow older. Your approach to change becomes especially apparent in the decisions you make together.

At the Nadir

An arrangement at home changes because you act on a private conviction. Your household may remember that initiative long after the work itself is done.

Arcturus in Paran with Midheaven

Rising

A first undertaking sets a possible direction for public work. The early emphasis is on your wish to improve an existing practice.

Culminating

Entrusted authority defines the responsibilities of your public role during your most visible years. The appointment tests how you exercise judgment on others' behalf.

Setting

A public role may develop through partnership and later through letting another person lead. Your contribution can continue through the work you enable them to undertake.

At the Nadir

An improved practice continues in use after public attention moves elsewhere. Quietly maintained responsibilities are part of what remains of the career.

Star Connections

Mars and the Moon with Pollux

Pollux

Robson specifies Mars with Arcturus in the first, seventh, ninth, tenth or eleventh house while the Moon is with Pollux. His 1923 entry attaches a suffocation warning to this exact compound. That fatal outcome needs weighing as an old delineation rather than treating it as a personal forecast. For a working reading, examine how forceful action interacts with emotional conflict, especially when someone has authority over other people. The point to watch is whether a dispute still allows room for reconsideration and voluntary agreement.
