The Descendant in Astrology

Because the Descendant is always opposite the Ascendant, there are six fixed pairings. Aries rising always has a Libra Descendant. Taurus rising pairs with Scorpio. Gemini with Sagittarius, Cancer with Capricorn, Leo with Aquarius, and Virgo with Pisces. Each pairing describes a specific polarity between what you embody and what you seek.

These are not oppositions of conflict but of completion. The sign on your Descendant holds qualities you have not fully developed in yourself, which is precisely why those qualities feel so attractive when you encounter them in another person. Over time, the healthiest expression of any axis pair is integration: learning to carry both sides rather than outsourcing one to a partner.

The planet that rules the sign on your Descendant is called the Descendant ruler (or 7th house ruler). Its natal sign, house, and aspects describe how partnership themes tend to unfold for you. If the ruler is well-placed (in its own sign, exalted, or in a strong house), partnerships tend to be supportive and well-matched.
