Composite Chart Placements
Planet in House Interpretations
A composite chart gives the relationship a chart of its own, built from corresponding positions in two natal charts. These readings follow Robert Hand's Planets in Composite, including his judgments about which placements support a relationship and which tend to strain it. The house method matters: Augurine calculates composite cusps differently from Hand.[1]
The Sun describes the relationship's organizing purpose. The Moon shows its emotional habits and need for security. Venus brings affection and enjoyment; Mars brings desire and the drive to assert yourself within the partnership. A romance and a working association put those needs into different settings.
Each placement below pairs Hand's composite interpretation with a Davison chart reading. A planet can occupy different houses in your composite and Davison charts, so follow each chart's own house placements.

Some houses suit personal relationships better
Hand ranks the first, fifth, seventh, and eleventh as the best houses for a personal relationship when emphasized by the Sun or Moon, or by a strong planetary cluster. The third and ninth come next because they sustain communication. The fourth is especially suited to marriage and sharing an intimate home life.[1]
The second and tenth have more significance for professional associations. The eighth often describes a bond experienced as fateful. The sixth and twelfth are the least desirable for personal relationships, although good aspects can give even those houses a positive expression.[1]
This ranking puts the type of relationship first. Work may give a sixth-house emphasis a fitting purpose, while a romance feels reduced to duty. Hand normally advises against marriage when the twelfth house is very strong; he also recognizes that some couples gain from its demanding encounters with hidden patterns.[2]
Augurine and Hand calculate the houses differently
In Hand's method, the composite Midheaven supplies the tenth-house cusp. He casts the remaining cusps for that Midheaven at the latitude where the couple lives or the relationship takes place. His book uses Koch houses, although he permits other house systems.[3]
The midpoint of the two natal Ascendants is a separate sensitive point in that chart. Hand calls it the composite Ascendant, and says it can fall from the eleventh house through the second rather than marking the first-house cusp. Aspects to that point describe how the relationship meets the outside world.[2]
Augurine takes the shorter-arc midpoint of each pair of natal house cusps. It also takes the shorter-arc midpoint of the natal Ascendants. With Placidus, that point coincides with the first cusp because each natal Ascendant marks its first cusp; the composite cusps remain independent natal cusp midpoints. Augurine does not cast a new set of houses at the relationship's latitude. Averaging each cusp independently can also put the resulting cusps out of zodiac order in some widely separated charts.
The calculator defaults to whole sign houses for both natal charts, with each natal cusp at 0° of a sign. Their composite cusp midpoints are evenly spaced 30° apart, each at 0° or 15° of a sign. The midpoint of the two actual Ascendants generally falls inside a house rather than on the first cusp.
A planet may therefore occupy a different house in Augurine than in a composite calculated by Hand's method. These articles adapt his house meanings to the placement shown by our calculator. To reproduce a reading from his book, calculate houses from the composite Midheaven and the relationship's latitude, then select the article for that resulting house.
Hand also uses both midpoints when the natal positions are more than 150 degrees apart. For widely separated natal Midheavens, that gives two sets of houses; he gives the nearer set precedence and uses the farther set for supplementary information. Augurine returns one set from the shorter-arc cusp midpoints.[1]
An exact angle conjunction concentrates the planet
A planet anywhere in an angular house brings its subject into a prominent area of the relationship. An exact conjunction to the angle concentrates that subject at a particular point of expression. Mars on the Descendant puts assertion and confrontation directly into partnership; Venus on the Midheaven makes affection and shared taste especially visible in the couple's public presence.
Hand specifically increases the weight of a planet conjunct or opposed to his composite Ascendant, wherever that point falls in his house chart.[2]In Augurine, the displayed Ascendant follows the midpoint method described above. Birth-time reliability matters for both angles and houses, and a house placement alone does not establish an exact conjunction. An aspect reading applies to the measured aspect; a sign reading describes another part of the chart.
The relationship supplies the context
The natal charts and the kind of relationship come first in Hand's procedure. House emphasis identifies the main issues; aspects to the Sun and Moon show how the couple tends to deal with them. Venus and Mars add particular weight in a sexual relationship.[1]
These readings describe symbolic tendencies. They do not forecast a marriage, a breakup, a pregnancy, or a financial return. A placement with strong potential can still be difficult to live, and a demanding placement can be part of a relationship the partners value.
