Davison Chart Placements

The Davison relationship chart was developed by British astrologer Ronald C. Davison in the 1970s as a way to give a relationship its own natal chart. To calculate it, you find the midpoint in time between two birth dates and the midpoint in space between two birthplaces, then cast a standard horoscope for that moment and location. The result is a real chart, not an averaged set of positions, but an actual configuration of the sky at a specific time and place.

This differs from the composite chart, which averages the natal planetary positions directly. The Davison chart has its own Ascendant, Midheaven, and house system derived from a real birthplace latitude and longitude. Many astrologers find the Davison chart responds more sensitively to transits and progressions, making it especially useful for tracking how a relationship evolves over time.

Planets in the Davison chart describe qualities that belong to the relationship as an entity, not to either individual. The Sun shows the relationship's core purpose and vitality, meaning what the bond is fundamentally organized around. The Moon reveals the emotional texture of the partnership, how comfort and safety are established between two people. Venus describes the aesthetic sensibility and relational style that emerges when these two people are together. Mars shows where the relationship directs its energy, ambition, and desire.

The house each planet falls in tells you which area of life becomes the arena for that planetary energy. A Davison Moon in the 4th house, for instance, places the relationship's emotional center squarely in the domain of home and family. A Davison Mars in the 10th house channels the partnership's drive into career and public achievement. Reading the house as the stage and the planet as the actor gives you a clear interpretive entry point for any placement.

Both the Davison and composite charts aim to describe the relationship as a whole, but they do so differently. The composite chart averages natal positions and may produce a chart location that doesn't exist (mid-ocean, for example), whereas the Davison chart is always cast for a real, calculable point in time and space.

In practice, many astrologers use both. The composite chart tends to describe the relationship's internal architecture, the patterns and themes that define the bond itself. The Davison chart often responds more clearly to real-world timing, making it the preferred tool for relationship forecasting and transit work. Together they provide a comprehensive picture of who you are as a couple and how your story unfolds.
