Decans in Astrology: The 36 Faces of the Zodiac

Every zodiac sign spans 30 degrees, and decans split that span into three equal segments of 10 degrees each. Each decan has its own planetary ruler, following the Chaldean order (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, cycling continuously from Aries through Pisces). This creates 36 distinct decan rulers across the zodiac, adding a layer of specificity that sign-level astrology alone cannot provide.

What decans are

A decan (also called a face) is a 10-degree division of a zodiac sign. Aries has three decans: 0 to 10 degrees (first decan), 10 to 20 degrees (second decan), and 20 to 30 degrees (third decan). Each decan is assigned a planetary ruler that modifies the pure sign energy.

The concept originates in Egyptian astronomy, where the 36 decans were star groups used for timekeeping. Hellenistic astrologers adapted the system, assigning planetary rulers using the Chaldean order. In the essential dignity framework, decans are the weakest minor dignity (+1 point), but they add meaningful interpretive nuance.

The Chaldean decan rulers

The Chaldean order arranges the seven traditional planets by decreasing orbital speed as understood in ancient astronomy: Saturn (slowest), Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon (fastest). Starting with Mars as the ruler of Aries decan 1, the sequence cycles continuously through all 36 decans.

Aries: Mars, Sun, Venus. Taurus: Mercury, Moon, Saturn. Gemini: Jupiter, Mars, Sun. Cancer: Venus, Mercury, Moon. Leo: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars. Virgo: Sun, Venus, Mercury. Libra: Moon, Saturn, Jupiter. Scorpio: Mars, Sun, Venus. Sagittarius: Mercury, Moon, Saturn. Capricorn: Jupiter, Mars, Sun. Aquarius: Venus, Mercury, Moon. Pisces: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars.

The complete 36 decan table

Aries: 1st decan (0 to 10 degrees) ruled by Mars, 2nd decan (10 to 20 degrees) ruled by the Sun, 3rd decan (20 to 30 degrees) ruled by Venus. Taurus: 1st Mercury, 2nd Moon, 3rd Saturn. Gemini: 1st Jupiter, 2nd Mars, 3rd Sun. Cancer: 1st Venus, 2nd Mercury, 3rd Moon. Leo: 1st Saturn, 2nd Jupiter, 3rd Mars. Virgo: 1st Sun, 2nd Venus, 3rd Mercury.

Libra: 1st decan ruled by the Moon, 2nd Saturn, 3rd Jupiter. Scorpio: 1st Mars, 2nd Sun, 3rd Venus. Sagittarius: 1st Mercury, 2nd Moon, 3rd Saturn. Capricorn: 1st Jupiter, 2nd Mars, 3rd Sun. Aquarius: 1st Venus, 2nd Mercury, 3rd Moon. Pisces: 1st Saturn, 2nd Jupiter, 3rd Mars. Notice that the sequence cycles through the Chaldean order continuously without interruption across sign boundaries.

Each decan carries a distinct coloring of the sign it belongs to. The Saturn decan of Leo (0 to 10 degrees) has a more disciplined, serious quality than the Jupiter decan (10 to 20) or the Mars decan (20 to 30). People born with the Sun in the same sign but different decans often report noticeably different temperaments, and the decan ruler is part of why.

Decan rulers sign by sign

Aries decan 1 (Mars) brings pure martial energy: initiative, directness, and competitive drive at their most raw. Aries decan 2 (Sun) adds leadership quality and a desire for recognition. Aries decan 3 (Venus) softens the Aries edge with charm and social awareness. Taurus decan 1 (Mercury) combines earthy stability with intellectual curiosity. Taurus decan 2 (Moon) is the most nurturing and comfort-seeking portion of Taurus. Taurus decan 3 (Saturn) brings discipline and endurance to the sign of material security.

Gemini decan 1 (Jupiter) adds philosophical breadth to Gemini's curiosity. Gemini decan 2 (Mars) sharpens the intellect into debate and decisive communication. Gemini decan 3 (Sun) focuses Gemini energy on self-expression and creative output. Cancer decan 1 (Venus) turns Cancer's caring instinct toward beauty and relationship. Cancer decan 2 (Mercury) brings analytical skill to emotional intelligence. Cancer decan 3 (Moon) is Cancer at its most lunar: deeply intuitive, protective, and attuned to mood.

Leo decan 1 (Saturn) tempers Leo's fire with structure and gravitas. Leo decan 2 (Jupiter) is generous, expansive, and naturally theatrical. Leo decan 3 (Mars) adds fierce willpower and physical vitality. Virgo decan 1 (Sun) gives Virgo's precision a confident, authoritative voice. Virgo decan 2 (Venus) brings aesthetic sensibility to Virgo's attention to detail. Virgo decan 3 (Mercury) is the most analytical and communicative portion of Virgo.

Libra decan 1 (Moon) adds emotional depth to Libra's social grace. Libra decan 2 (Saturn) brings seriousness and fairness to partnerships and justice. Libra decan 3 (Jupiter) gives Libra an optimistic, philosophical, and diplomatic quality. Scorpio decan 1 (Mars) is Scorpio at its most intense and penetrating. Scorpio decan 2 (Sun) channels Scorpio's depth into personal authority and transformation. Scorpio decan 3 (Venus) adds magnetic allure and relational depth to Scorpio's intensity.

Sagittarius decan 1 (Mercury) grounds the archer's vision in communication and teaching. Sagittarius decan 2 (Moon) connects Sagittarian wanderlust to emotional exploration and intuition. Sagittarius decan 3 (Saturn) brings discipline and structure to Sagittarius's quest for meaning. Capricorn decan 1 (Jupiter) infuses ambition with optimism and vision. Capricorn decan 2 (Mars) adds drive and competitive edge to Capricorn's climb. Capricorn decan 3 (Sun) gives Capricorn a regal, authoritative quality.

Aquarius decan 1 (Venus) adds warmth and artistic sensibility to Aquarian independence. Aquarius decan 2 (Mercury) is the most intellectually inventive portion of Aquarius. Aquarius decan 3 (Moon) brings emotional awareness to the sign of detachment. Pisces decan 1 (Saturn) provides structure and discipline to Pisces's boundless imagination. Pisces decan 2 (Jupiter) is the most spiritually expansive and idealistic portion of Pisces. Pisces decan 3 (Mars) adds willpower and creative drive to the final degrees of the zodiac.

Traditional vs. modern decan systems

The Chaldean decan system described above is the traditional assignment used in essential dignity scoring. Modern astrology sometimes uses a triplicity-based decan system where each decan is ruled by the next sign of the same element (Aries decan 1 = Aries/Mars, decan 2 = Leo/Sun, decan 3 = Sagittarius/Jupiter).

The two systems produce different rulers for many decans. This calculator uses the Chaldean system because it is the one integrated into the traditional essential dignity scoring framework. The modern triplicity decans are a separate interpretive tool, not part of the classical dignity table.

Decans in dignity scoring

In the essential dignity scoring system, a planet gains +1 point if it is the Chaldean ruler of the decan it occupies. Mars at 5 degrees Aries is in the first decan of Aries, which Mars rules: +1 face dignity. Mars at 15 degrees Aries is in the second decan, ruled by the Sun: no face dignity bonus.

Because the scoring engine uses separate positive and negative branches, a planet in detriment that holds face dignity scores +1, not -5. The positive face dignity causes the negative branch to be discarded entirely. Even face (+1), the smallest bonus in the system, is enough to override detriment (-5) or fall (-4). This branching behavior means that any positive dignity rescues a debilitated planet from its negative score.

Using decans in chart reading

Decans add specificity to sign-level interpretation. Two people with Sun in Leo may have noticeably different expressions if one has Sun in the Saturn decan (0 to 10 degrees) and the other in the Jupiter decan (10 to 20 degrees). The decan ruler colors the sign energy without replacing it.

Some traditional sources, particularly the Picatrix and Agrippa's Three Books, associate each decan with specific images, themes, and magical correspondences. While these associations are beyond the scope of dignity scoring, they reflect the long history of treating decans as meaningful subdivisions of the zodiac.

Decans and the Tarot

The 36 Chaldean decans correspond directly to the 36 numbered pip cards (2 through 10) of the four Tarot suits. The Golden Dawn system, which formalized this connection in the late 19th century, assigns each pip card to a specific decan: the 2 of Wands corresponds to Mars ruling the first decan of Aries (0 to 10 degrees), the 3 of Wands to Sun ruling the second decan of Aries (10 to 20 degrees), and so on through all four suits and twelve signs.

This correspondence means that pulling a specific pip card in a Tarot reading activates the same planetary and zodiacal energy as the corresponding decan in an astrological chart. The 9 of Cups, for example, corresponds to Jupiter ruling the second decan of Pisces (10 to 20 degrees), combining Jupiter's generosity with Pisces' emotional depth. Understanding the decan system connects Tarot and astrological practice by revealing the shared symbolic framework underneath both traditions.
