Algenib in Astrology

Algenib, in the wing of Pegasus, combines Mars-Mercury energy to produce sharp, assertive mental faculties and the courage to speak boldly. It bestows intellectual combativeness and a talent for persuasion through forceful argument. The native thinks quickly under pressure and communicates with decisive authority.

Mythology & History

Algenib takes its name from the Arabic al-Janb, meaning 'the side' or 'the flank,' describing its position in the wing of Pegasus. The winged horse Pegasus sprang from the blood of Medusa when Perseus beheaded her, born simultaneously with the warrior Chrysaor. Pegasus was later tamed by Bellerophon with a golden bridle given by Athena, and together they defeated the Chimera. But when Bellerophon tried to ride Pegasus to Mount Olympus, Zeus sent a gadfly that stung the horse, throwing the presumptuous rider back to earth while Pegasus continued upward to become a constellation.

Pegasus Context

Algenib marks the southeastern corner of the Great Square of Pegasus, one of the most prominent asterisms in the autumn sky. The Great Square represents the body of the winged horse, and Algenib sits where the wing meets the flank. Its Mars-Mercury nature gives it the quality of swift, forceful intellectual energy, appropriate for a constellation associated with the power of flight, inspiration, and the dangerous consequences of overreaching. Pegasus' mythology warns against hubris while celebrating the divine gift of imagination.
