Local space astrology maps planetary energy as compass bearings. Each planet draws a line from your birthplace outward, highlighting cities and regions aligned with its theme.
Bring an exact birth time
Local space lines radiate from your exact birth location at birth. Even small time errors shift the entire compass.
Add your current city
If you live somewhere different from where you were born, adding your current location shows which lines pass through real places near you.
What Is Local Space Astrology?
Local space astrology converts your natal planetary positions from the ecliptic (zodiac) into your horizon coordinate system, producing a personal compass showing which direction each planet occupies. Planets near the horizon are the strongest directional forces; those high above carry less directional influence.
Developed by astrologer Michael Erlewine in the 1970s as a complement to astrocartography, local space astrology is sometimes called "astrological feng shui" for its focus on directional energy in your immediate environment.
Local Space vs Astrocartography
Both tools use your birth data, but they answer different questions. Use them together for the most complete locational picture.
| Feature | Local Space | Astrocartography |
|---|---|---|
| What it maps | Compass directions from your location | Angular lines across the world map |
| Line type | Straight lines radiating outward | Curved lines following angularity |
| Best for | Directions within a city or home | Choosing which city or country |
| Coordinate system | Horizon (azimuth + altitude) | Ecliptic (longitude on angles) |
| Strength indicator | Altitude (closer to horizon = stronger) | Distance from line (closer = stronger) |
| Changes with relocation | Yes — directions shift in each city | No — lines are fixed at birth |
How to Read Your Local Space Chart
Three steps to get the most from your compass wheel and map.
- 1
Check which planets are near the horizon
Planets with altitudes close to 0° sit on your horizon and have the strongest directional pull. These are the compass directions that matter most in your chart.
- 2
Note the azimuth (compass bearing)
Each planet's azimuth tells you its compass direction — north, south, east, west, or any point between. This is the direction from your location where that planet's themes concentrate.
- 3
Trace the direction on the world map
Follow each planet's line from your location outward to see which cities and regions fall along that bearing. Cities on your Venus line, for example, may feel particularly harmonious.
Your Planetary Directions
Each planet activates a specific compass direction in your chart. Here is what each one brings to the direction it occupies.
Sun
Identity, confidence, vitality
The direction where you feel most yourself. Face it when you need clarity or self-assurance.
Moon
Comfort, emotion, nurturing
The direction of emotional safety. Align your resting space or bedroom toward your Moon line.
Mercury
Communication, learning, travel
The direction that sharpens thinking. Face it for study, writing, or important conversations.
Venus
Love, beauty, pleasure
The direction of attraction and ease. Social spaces and creative areas benefit from Venus alignment.
Mars
Drive, energy, assertion
The direction of action and ambition. A home gym or workspace facing Mars can boost motivation.
Jupiter
Growth, opportunity, expansion
The direction of abundance. Travel or commute along your Jupiter line for broadened horizons.
Saturn
Structure, discipline, mastery
The direction of long-term effort. Align your workspace for focused, sustained productivity.
Uranus
Innovation, disruption, freedom
The direction of change. Expect surprises and breakthroughs when you orient toward Uranus.
Neptune
Inspiration, intuition, imagination
The direction of creative and spiritual sensitivity. Good for meditation or artistic spaces.
Pluto
Transformation, power, depth
The direction of profound change. Pluto directions tend to be intense — approach consciously.
Astrological Feng Shui
How Astrological Feng Shui Uses Your Local Space Chart
Traditional feng shui assigns universal meanings to compass directions. Astrological feng shui personalizes this by using your birth chart to determine which directions carry the most energy for you specifically. Your local space chart becomes the map: if Venus sits at 220° azimuth, the southwest corner of your home or office aligns with themes of love, beauty, and social ease. Arranging your space to honor these planetary directions is the core practice.
Unlike generic feng shui, every person's directional map is different. Your Jupiter direction is unique to your chart, and it shifts when you relocate — which is why the relocation comparison feature matters for anyone designing or choosing a living space.
Finding Your Best Direction with Astrology
Start with your strongest horizon planets — the ones closest to 0° altitude. These directions carry the most concentrated planetary energy. If your strongest horizon planet is Jupiter at 135° azimuth (southeast), that direction is where growth, opportunity, and expansion focus for you.
Practical applications include orienting your desk toward your Mercury direction for sharper communication, placing your bed to align with your Moon direction for better rest, or choosing a commute route that follows your Jupiter line for a sense of expansion. The compass wheel makes these directions easy to identify and apply.
One important note
Local space astrology depends on the same birth details you would use for a birth chart. Even a small birth-time error shifts your horizon enough to rotate planetary directions, so use the most accurate time you can.
Best when you are asking:
Which direction should my desk or workspace face?
Why does a certain corner of my home feel different?
How do my planetary directions change if I move cities?

Frequently Asked Questions
What is local space astrology?
Local space astrology converts your natal planetary positions from the zodiac into the horizon coordinate system — azimuth (compass direction) and altitude (elevation). This creates a personal directional compass showing which compass directions are activated by each planet in your birth chart.
How is local space different from astrocartography?
Astrocartography shows where on the globe each planet was angular (on the MC, IC, ASC, or DSC) at your birth — it's a world map with curved lines. Local space shows which compass direction each planet lies in from your location — it's a personal directional compass with straight lines radiating from you. They're complementary: astrocartography for choosing cities, local space for choosing directions within a city.
What does it mean when a planet is on the horizon in local space?
A planet near the horizon (within 10° altitude) is the strongest directional force in your local space chart. It means that planet's themes — whether love (Venus), ambition (Mars), or growth (Jupiter) — concentrate most powerfully in that compass direction. The planet closest to 0° altitude is your dominant directional influence.
Can I use local space astrology to choose where to live?
Yes — the relocation comparison feature recalculates your local space chart from a new city while keeping your birth time. This shows how your planetary directions shift in different locations. A planet that's dormant (high altitude) in your current city might become a powerful horizon force in another, activating its themes directionally.
What is the local space compass wheel?
The compass wheel is a 360-degree chart of your horizon, with East at 0° and directions measured counter-clockwise (following astrologer Michael Erlewine's convention). Each planet is plotted at its azimuth (compass direction) and altitude (distance from the horizon). Planets near the outer rim are near your horizon and strongest.
