Local space astrology maps planetary symbolism as compass bearings. Each planet draws a full line from your selected origin, with cities and regions shown as geographic reference points.
Bring an exact birth time
The calculation preserves your exact birth instant before projecting planetary bearings from the selected origin.
Add your current city
If you live somewhere different from where you were born, adding your current location shows which lines pass through real places near you.
Source Boundary for This Calculator
Local space converts natal planetary positions into horizon coordinates from a specific location. The compass and map show directional symbolism rather than a physical force field.
Use the directions as prompts for place-based reflection rather than proof that a room, route, city, or relocation will produce a specific outcome. Practical constraints, safety, cost, access, relationships, and ordinary preference still matter.
What Is Local Space Astrology?
Local space astrology converts your natal planetary positions from the ecliptic (zodiac) into your horizon coordinate system, producing a personal compass showing which direction each planet occupies. The result keeps altitude signed so above horizon, below horizon, zenith, and nadir states remain distinct.
Developed by astrologer Michael Erlewine in the 1970s as a complement to astrocartography, local space astrology is sometimes called "astrological feng shui" for its focus on directional symbolism in your immediate environment.
Local Space vs Astrocartography
Both tools use your birth data, but they answer different questions. Use them together for the most complete locational picture.
| Feature | Local Space | Astrocartography |
|---|---|---|
| What it maps | Compass directions from your location | Angular lines across the world map |
| Line type | Two arms of a full great circle | Curved lines following angularity |
| Best for | Directions within a city or home | Choosing which city or country |
| Coordinate system | Horizon (azimuth + altitude) | Ecliptic (longitude on angles) |
| Displayed evidence | Signed altitude and horizon separation | Angular line and distance evidence |
| Changes with relocation | Yes, directions shift in each city | No, lines are fixed at birth |
How to Read Your Local Space Chart
Three steps to get the most from your compass wheel and map.
- 1
Read the signed coordinate table
Compare each North clockwise bearing with its signed altitude, horizon separation, and nearest cardinal direction. Open the receipt to see the threshold policy behind any match label.
- 2
Note the azimuth (compass bearing)
Each planet's azimuth tells you its compass direction: north, south, east, west, or any point between. This is the direction from your location where that planet's themes concentrate.
- 3
Trace the direction on the world map
Follow each planet's line from your location outward to see which cities and regions fall along that bearing. Cities on your Venus line, for example, may feel particularly harmonious.
Your Planetary Directions
Each planet emphasizes a specific compass direction in your chart. Here is what each one brings to the direction it occupies.
Sun
Identity, confidence, vitality
The direction linked with solar symbolism: visibility, confidence, and self-definition.
Moon
Comfort, emotion, nurturing
The direction of emotional comfort. Some practitioners align resting spaces toward the Moon line.
Mercury
Communication, learning, travel
The direction linked with Mercury topics such as study, writing, messages, and movement.
Venus
Love, beauty, pleasure
The direction linked with Venus topics such as social ease, beauty, art, and pleasure.
Mars
Drive, initiative, assertion
The direction linked with Mars topics such as effort, action, heat, and directness.
Jupiter
Growth, opportunity, expansion
The direction linked with Jupiter topics such as expansion, study, travel, and support.
Saturn
Structure, discipline, mastery
The direction linked with Saturn topics such as structure, patience, limits, and long effort.
Uranus
Innovation, disruption, freedom
The direction linked with Uranus topics such as novelty, disruption, experiment, and freedom.
Neptune
Inspiration, intuition, imagination
The direction linked with Neptune topics such as imagination, reflection, ambiguity, and art.
Pluto
Transformation, power, depth
The direction linked with Pluto topics such as depth, pressure, control, and release.
Astrological Feng Shui
How Astrological Feng Shui Uses Your Local Space Chart
Traditional feng shui assigns universal meanings to compass directions. Astrological feng shui personalizes this by using your birth chart to determine which planetary symbolism is associated with each direction. Your local space chart becomes the map: if Venus sits at 220° azimuth, the southwest corner of your home or office aligns with themes of love, beauty, and social ease. Arranging your space to honor these planetary directions is the core practice.
Unlike generic feng shui, every person's directional map is different. Your Jupiter direction is unique to your chart, and it shifts when you relocate. That is why the relocation comparison feature matters for anyone designing or comparing a living space.
Finding Your Best Direction with Astrology
Start with the exact coordinate table. A Jupiter bearing of 135° points southeast from the selected origin, while its signed altitude records whether Jupiter was above or below the horizon. The bearing can serve as a prompt for observing Jupiter themes without turning the altitude into a rank.
You can test a Mercury direction when choosing a desk orientation, or record how a Moon direction feels in a room. Treat these as observations alongside comfort, safety, cost, and ordinary preference.
One important note
Local space astrology depends on the same birth details you would use for a birth chart. Even a small birth-time error shifts your horizon enough to rotate planetary directions, so use the most accurate time you can.
Best when you are asking:
Which direction should my desk or workspace face?
Why does a certain corner of my home feel different?
How do my planetary directions change if I move cities?

Frequently Asked Questions
What is local space astrology?
Local space astrology converts your natal planetary positions from the zodiac into the horizon coordinate system: azimuth (compass direction) and altitude (elevation). This creates a personal directional compass showing which compass directions correspond to each planet in your birth chart.
How is local space different from astrocartography?
Astrocartography shows where on the globe each planet was angular (on the MC, IC, ASC, or DSC) at your birth. It is a world map with curved lines. Local space shows which compass direction each planet lies in from your location. It is a personal directional compass with straight lines radiating from you. They are complementary symbolic location layers.
What does it mean when a planet is on the horizon in local space?
A planet near the horizon (within 10° altitude) carries the clearest directional symbolism in your local space chart. Its themes, such as Venus for connection or Mars for assertion, are easiest to read along that compass bearing. The planet closest to 0° altitude is the most prominent directional testimony.
Can I use local space astrology to choose where to live?
Use it as one symbolic input, not as a housing verdict. The relocation comparison feature recalculates your local space chart from a new city while keeping your birth time, so you can see how the planetary bearings shift. Practical concerns, safety, cost, climate, and community still matter more than any chart line.
What is the local space compass wheel?
The compass wheel is a 360-degree chart of your horizon, with East at 0° and directions measured counter-clockwise (following astrologer Michael Erlewine's convention). Each planet is plotted at its azimuth (compass direction) and altitude (distance from the horizon). Planets near the outer rim are closest to your horizon and easiest to read directionally.
