What is a Human Design chart?

A Human Design chart, or BodyGraph, maps your birth data onto a nine-center diagram to show your Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, and Incarnation Cross. It reads two moments, your birth and a Design point 88 degrees of solar arc earlier, and reads best as a mirror for self-understanding rather than a forecast of events.

For the background, the four core Types, and the five labels commonly used in guides, read the guide to the Human Design Types.

What your free chart includes

Your free result includes a BodyGraph overview and every chart layer listed below, all read from your birth data:

  • Energy Type and Strategy, the headline of your chart.
  • Inner Authority, a decision practice to test.
  • Profile and its two lines, the role you play.
  • Definition, how your centers connect.
  • Incarnation Cross, a life theme from your Suns and Earths.
  • All nine centers, defined and open states.
  • The thirty-six channels, which ones are switched on.
  • Every activation, across Personality and Design.

Creating a free account is optional. It keeps your birth data ready for Augurine's traditional astrology chart and timing tools.

How your chart is calculated

Your BodyGraph is built from two snapshots of the sky. The first is your birth moment, which gives your conscious, Personality activations, drawn in black. The second is your Design point, the instant the Sun sat exactly 88 degrees of arc earlier, roughly 88 days before you were born, which gives your unconscious, Design activations, drawn in red.

At each of those two moments, thirteen bodies, the Sun and Earth, the Moon, both lunar nodes, and the planets, land in one of 64 gates and one of its six lines. When both gates of a channel are switched on, that channel completes and colors in the two centers it connects. Which centers end up defined is what sets your Type, Authority, and Definition.

The positions come from the same of-date engine behind every chart on the site, the apparent positions astronomers and professional software use, rather than a lookup table. Your conscious Sun and Earth and your Design Sun and Earth form the four gates of your Incarnation Cross.

Because a fast point like the Moon can change gate within a single day, an exact birth time gives the most reliable chart. If you are not sure of yours, see how to find your birth time.

Your Type and its Strategy

Your Type is the headline of your chart. It comes from which centers are defined and whether a motor center connects to the Throat, and it points to one Strategy for meeting life with less resistance. Your result above names your Type, Strategy, and Authority.

The original system defines four core Types and treats Manifesting Generator as part of the Generator Type. Many current guides display Manifesting Generator as a fifth label for easier comparison. Read the guide to the Human Design Types.

Authority as a decision practice

Authority is the decision practice Human Design assigns from the defined centers. The system checks them in a fixed order: Emotional, then Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental, and finally Lunar for Reflectors.

A defined Solar Plexus points to observing an emotional wave before deciding, while a defined Sacral points to the gut response in the moment. Treat the assigned Authority as an experiment and compare its guidance with your actual decision process over time.

Human Design and Gene Keys

Human Design and Gene Keys run on the same 64 gates and the same birth-plus-Design calculation, so the underlying numbers match. What differs is the use. Human Design reads your gates as Type, Strategy, and Authority, a guide for decisions in the moment. Gene Keys reads the same gates as a Shadow, Gift, and Siddhi to contemplate over years.

Both calculators on this site share one engine, so your gates line up exactly between them. The four gates of your Incarnation Cross also connect to your lunar nodes, if you want to follow that thread through your chart.

The nine centers

Each center governs a theme of life. Defined centers represent more consistent patterns within Human Design. Open centers describe themes that may vary with the surrounding environment. Find your defined and open centers in your chart above, then read them here.

Head

inspiration and mental pressure

Defined: A defined Head is associated with a consistent source of questions and inspiration. It may also bring steady pressure to make sense of ideas.

Open: An open Head may amplify questions and mental pressure from the surrounding environment. Notice which questions deserve attention and which can pass.

Ajna

how you think and hold certainty

Defined: A defined Ajna is associated with a consistent way of processing ideas and holding a point of view. Other people may notice the steadiness of that framework.

Open: An open Ajna may support trying several ways of thinking. Flexibility can be useful when certainty feels pressured or borrowed from the room.

Throat

communication and manifestation

Defined: A defined Throat is associated with a more consistent mode of expression. A motor connection adds an action component within the Human Design model.

Open: An open Throat may express differently across settings. Notice the difference between a genuine opening to speak and pressure to attract attention.

G Center

identity, love, and direction

Defined: A defined G Center is associated with a steadier sense of identity and direction across changing circumstances.

Open: An open G Center may experience identity and direction as more responsive to surroundings. Place and company can become useful points of observation.

Heart

willpower, worth, and the ego

Defined: A defined Heart is associated with access to willpower in pulses. Commitments may work better when effort and rest are both included.

Open: An open Heart may amplify pressure to prove worth or make promises. Notice when a commitment serves the task and when it seeks approval.

Sacral

life force and work energy

Defined: A defined Sacral is associated with renewable energy for work that draws a response. Satisfaction and fatigue can be observed as feedback about effort.

Open: An open Sacral may amplify other people's work energy. Clear stopping points can help distinguish borrowed momentum from available personal energy.

Spleen

instinct, intuition, and well-being

Defined: A defined Spleen is associated with a steady, present moment instinct. The signal may be quiet and brief, which makes it useful to observe without treating it as a guarantee.

Open: An open Spleen may amplify fear or attachment from the surrounding environment. Notice when familiarity keeps something in place past its practical use.

Solar Plexus

emotions and feeling

Defined: A defined Solar Plexus is read through an emotional wave with changing highs and lows. Important decisions can be observed across more than one point in that wave.

Open: An open Solar Plexus may amplify the emotional tone of a room. Pausing can help identify which feelings began in the surrounding environment.

Root

drive, pressure, and stress

Defined: A defined Root is associated with a more consistent way of handling pressure and pulse. It may supply steady fuel for starting or completing a task.

Open: An open Root may amplify pressure to finish quickly. Letting the first stress response pass can create more room for a deliberate choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Human Design chart?

A Human Design chart, also called a BodyGraph, maps your birth data onto a nine-center diagram to show your Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, and Incarnation Cross. It reads two moments: your birth and a Design point 88 degrees of solar arc earlier. The system blends astrology, the I Ching, the chakras, and the Kabbalah, and it is used as a guide to decision-making rather than a forecast.

Is this Human Design chart calculator free?

Yes. The free result includes a BodyGraph overview with gate activation markers, plus your Type, Strategy, Authority, Profile, Definition, Incarnation Cross, all nine centers, and every activation. Creating an account is optional and keeps your birth data ready for Augurine's traditional astrology chart and timing tools.

Do I need my exact birth time for Human Design?

For a definitive chart, yes. Your Type and Authority depend on which gates are active, and the Moon and other fast-moving points can change gate within a single day. You can still generate a chart with an approximate or unknown time, but treat it as a sketch and confirm it once you have an exact birth time.

What are the five Human Design types?

The original system defines four core Types: Generator, Projector, Manifestor, and Reflector. Manifesting Generator is a Generator subtype, and many current guides display it as a fifth label for easier comparison. Generators and Manifesting Generators share the Strategy of waiting to respond.

What is my Authority in Human Design?

Authority is the decision practice Human Design assigns from your defined centers. The hierarchy begins with Emotional, then checks Sacral, Splenic, Ego, Self-Projected, Mental, and Lunar. Treat the assigned practice as an experiment and compare it with your actual decisions over time.

How is Human Design different from Gene Keys?

They run on the same 64 gates and the same birth-plus-Design calculation, so the underlying numbers match. Human Design reads those gates as Type, Strategy, Authority, and centers, built for decisions in the moment. Gene Keys reads the same gates as a Shadow, Gift, and Siddhi to contemplate over years. You can hold both, and our Gene Keys calculator uses the identical engine.

How accurate is this Human Design chart?

It is built from a real astronomical ephemeris, the apparent of-date positions professional software uses, rather than a stored lookup table, and the Design point is solved to the moment the Sun sat exactly 88 degrees of arc before your birth. On your side, the one factor that most affects accuracy is birth time, since a fast point can change gate within a day.

Why might two Human Design calculators show different results?

Almost always birth time or node convention. A few minutes can move the Moon or another fast point into the next gate, which can change a channel and even your Type. Calculators also differ on the lunar node, since some use the mean node and some the true node, and the two can disagree right at a gate boundary. With an exact birth time, your core Type, Strategy, and Authority stay stable across tools.
