A dominant planet score does not prove personality, behavior, vocation, destiny, outcome, or the single force that runs a life. Treat it as a chart-emphasis index and compare it with the full natal chart.
What is a dominant planet?
A dominant planet is the body this calculator scores as most emphasized in your birth chart. Older astrological traditions called one version of this planet the lord of the geniture; modern practitioners call it the dominant planet or the strongest planet. It is not the same as your Sun sign (which is set by birth date alone) and not the same as your chart ruler (which is set by your Ascendant alone). The dominant planet is the planet that wins when the chart is scored as a whole.
People often discover their dominant planet is something other than the Sun. That is normal: dominance is about which planetary energy a scoring method emphasizes, which is usually richer than the surface identity carried by the Sun sign. A Cancer Sun with Mars in the 10th house and Mars ruling the Ascendant hands Mars the full angularity bonus and the chart-ruler bonus, which is usually enough to put it ahead of the Sun in this calculator.
How we calculate the dominant planet
The composite score adds six transparent line items per planet. Every line item is shown in your result, so you can see exactly why one planet won.
- Essential dignity runs on the Hellenistic table, where domicile (+5), exaltation (+4), triplicity (+3), and Egyptian bounds (+2) stack, detriment (-5) and fall (-4) stack the same way, and a planet holding none of them is peregrine at -5. That puts the range at -9 (Mercury in Pisces, which is in detriment and in fall at once) to +11 (Mercury in the first 7 degrees of Virgo, holding domicile, exaltation, and its own bound) for the seven traditional planets. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto score 0 on this line by design: the classical dignity table does not cover them, and crediting modern domicile would hand a whole birth cohort the same points for reasons that say nothing about the individual chart. Computed using the JPL DE440s planetary ephemeris via ANISE.
- Angularity awards +5 to planets in houses 1 or 10, +4 in houses 4 or 7, +2 in succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11), and 0 in cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12). Angular placements are visible and active; cadent placements are private and slow.
- Aspect activitycounts the planet's major aspects to the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. The effective orb follows the natal engine's planet-pair limits: 6° for Sun to Moon or either light to the Ascendant, 5° for Mercury, Venus, or Mars to a light or the Ascendant, 4.5° for Jupiter or Saturn to a light or the Ascendant, and 4° for Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto to a light or the Ascendant. The line awards at most 3 points to every planet except the Sun and Moon. The Sun and Moon can score at most 2 because neither can aspect itself. Aspects to the Midheaven are not currently counted because the natal aspect engine does not include the MC in its aspect inputs.
- Sect bonus awards +2 to the sect light (Sun by day, Moon by night) and +1 to the benefic and malefic of the sect (Jupiter and Saturn by day, Venus and Mars by night). Sect, the day-or-night division of the chart, is among the oldest classical distinctions and shapes how every other planet reads.
- Chart-ruler bonusawards +3 if the planet rules your Ascendant. The chart ruler tops the composite score in some charts and places mid-table in others. Your result reports the winner's margin over the runner-up, so a decisive lead reads differently from a contested one.
- Almuten standingawards +5 to the Almuten Figuris victor and 0 to 3 for runners-up scaled against the victor's total. The Almuten Figuris is the strongest classical signal we have, so it carries weight in the composite even though it is also displayed separately.
The three outer planets score only on angularity and aspect activity, which sets an 8-point ceiling. A traditional planet can reach the high twenties, so an outer planet wins only when the traditional planets are unusually weak.
Why almuten standing is one of the six lines
One of the six scoring lines awards points based on a planet's standing in the classical almuten contest, the medieval method that scores each traditional planet across five life-bearing points. Its dignity table awards rulership +5, exaltation +4, triplicity lords +3 each, term +2, and face +1. The day ruler receives +7 and the hour ruler receives +6. House position contributes 12 points in the 1st house down to 1 point in the 6th. The contest victor adds +5 to its composite score here. Runners-up earn a fractional bonus scaled to the gap.
The almuten contest supplies one classical input to the composite score. The composite winner can differ when other scoring lines tip the balance.
The composite essential-dignity line and the almuten contest share the dignity table, so those scores overlap. The almuten total also includes house-position points, so an angular planet earns points through both the angularity line and the almuten line.

These three terms get conflated in pop-astrology but describe different things. The table below disambiguates them.

What each dominant planet means
A short read on every dominant planet, in classical order. The final three are reachable but rare, because the scoring model gives the outer planets a lower point ceiling.
Sun-dominant
Self-driven, generative, organized around purpose and visibility.
Sun-dominant lives are arranged around a single throughline. The world reads you as a leader before you ask to lead, because energy concentrates around what you decide to back. Identity is the central currency, and you spend most of your life building the version of it that can hold up under pressure.
Watch for: Other people's brightness can register as competition rather than color. The work is to let the room be lit by more than one source.
Moon-dominant
Receptive, rhythm-driven, organized around feeling and cycle.
Moon-dominant lives move in waves. The instinct for what a moment needs is faster than analysis, and the body keeps the score on what other people miss. Memory, atmosphere, and care are the load-bearing structures, and you are usually the person other people return to when they need to feel known.
Watch for: The receiving channel can stay open after the moment has passed. Closing it deliberately protects your own rhythm.
Mercury-dominant
Quick, plural, organized around language and connection.
Mercury-dominant minds collect, sort, and re-route. You are usually the translator between people who do not realize they want the same thing. Reading, writing, teaching, and brokering all come naturally because you can hold multiple voices in mind without losing your own.
Watch for: Speed can mistake itself for depth. Slow speech, slow reading, slow writing, and slow decisions are unfamiliar but available.
Venus-dominant

Mars-dominant
Direct, decisive, organized around action and protection.

Jupiter-dominant

Watch for: Intensity becomes the only register that feels real. Light, surface, play, and small joys count too.
How our method differs from other calculators
A weighted-ruler method uses the Sun-sign ruler (40%), Moon-sign ruler (35%), and Rising-sign ruler (25%). The method is modern and lossy. It returns one number without exposing the calculation. Our method preserves the classical signal layers and shows you each line item.
We also factor the classical almuten standing as one of the six lines. The contest requires full dignity tables scored across the five chart points. Our backend uses rulership +5, exaltation +4, triplicity lords +3 each, term +2, and face +1. Day rulership adds +7 and hour rulership adds +6. The score gap between the top three planets is usually informative: a runaway leader points to a single-throughline life, while a tight three-way race points to a multi-dimensional personality with several major significators sharing the load. Do I need my exact birth time to find my dominant planet?
Yes, this calculator requires one. Angularity, sect, chart rulership, the almuten contest, and the aspect-activity count (which includes aspects to the Ascendant) all depend on a known birth time, so the tool asks for a time rather than returning a partial score. An approximate time still works and usually returns the same dominant planet, though the hour ruler and any placement near a house cusp can shift. What does it mean if my dominant planet is unexpected?

What's the difference between a dominant planet and a stellium?
