Mythology & History
Sualocin, or Alpha Delphini, has one of the most charming origin stories in star naming. The name is 'Nicolaus' spelled backward, honoring Niccolo Cacciatore (Nicolaus Venator in Latin), the assistant and eventual successor to the astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi at the Palermo Observatory. Cacciatore secretly inserted his Latinized name, reversed, into Piazzi's 1814 star catalog, and the name stuck. Before this playful naming, the star had no widely used proper name. In astrological tradition, Delphinus stars carry a nature of playfulness, cleverness, and the joy of swimming through life's currents.
Delphinus Context
Sualocin is the brightest star in Delphinus the Dolphin, a small but distinctive constellation whose four main stars form a diamond shape called Job's Coffin. The Greeks told that Delphinus was the dolphin sent by Poseidon to find and persuade the sea nymph Amphitrite to marry him. In another myth, dolphins rescued the poet Arion when he was thrown overboard by pirates, carrying him safely to shore. The constellation's association with rescue, music, and playful intelligence gives all its stars a lighthearted quality tempered by genuine helpfulness.
