Shen

Shen, meaning 'Three Side by Side,' is the fourth Chinese sieu, corresponding to Mintaka (delta Orionis) in Orion's Belt. Ruled by Mercury, this mansion draws its character from the three bright belt stars of Orion, one of the most recognizable patterns in the entire sky.

The 'three side by side' imagery speaks to alignment, order, and the power of things arranged in proper sequence.

Shen belongs to the White Tiger palace. Orion's Belt has been recognized across virtually every culture as a significant asterism, and its inclusion in the Chinese system under Mercury's rulership connects it to commerce, communication, and the ordering of information.

When the Moon transits Shen, Mercury's influence favors communication, commerce, and the arrangement of things in proper order. The alignment of the three belt stars symbolizes a period for getting one's affairs in order and establishing clear sequences.

The White Tiger (Bai Hu) is the celestial guardian of the West and the season of Autumn. Associated with the element Metal, the White Tiger represents courage, righteousness, and the harvesting energy that gathers what has ripened. In Chinese cosmology, the West is the direction of completion and return, where the Sun sets and the day's work is gathered in. The seven sieu of the White Tiger trace the great feline from its hind legs (Goel) through its body to its head, forming one of the four great celestial animals that divide the Chinese sky.
