The nakshatras are the 27 (or 28, including the intercalary Abhijit) lunar mansions of Vedic astrology. Each nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes of the ecliptic, is ruled by a planetary lord and presided over by a Vedic deity, and carries a distinctive symbol, caste, and asterism type that colors the nature of planets and the Moon when they pass through.
