Uranus Opposition

In The Gods of Change, Sasportas describes both disappointment with an early ambition and the emptiness that may follow achieving it. In the latter case, interests put aside to pursue success begin to insist on time.[2] A person who has built a respected career may still want an education or a creative life that the career has crowded out.

Changing that identity may involve grief for the old self. His account also asks for recognition of qualities excluded from a flattering self-image, including jealousy and greed.[2] At midlife, dissatisfaction may force you to admit desires that respectable success has kept out of view.

A one-sided life may swing toward its neglected side. The practical materialist may turn toward religion; someone absorbed in meditation may develop an appetite for worldly achievement.[2] The suddenness can surprise a partner who has relied on the old division of roles.

At January 1, 1985, 12:00 UTC, natal Uranus is at 15.39° Sagittarius. The opposition is exact at 15.39° Gemini. The passes fall on June 22 to 23, 2029, January 5, 2030, and April 7, 2030: direct, retrograde, then direct again. The first is at age 44½ and the last at 45¼.

Uranus turns direct near 14.51° Gemini in February 2030, less than one degree from the opposition target. The January retrograde pass and April direct pass fall nearly equal distances on either side of that station. This slow near-opposition keeps the aspect close for months. A desire to break free that first appeared in June may still be pressing when the final pass arrives.

For the same birth, Saturn opposes natal Saturn at 24.78° Scorpio on August 20 and September 22, 2029, then April 21, 2030. The final Saturn and Uranus passes are about two weeks apart. The wider midlife cluster described in The Gods of Change includes these oppositions, Neptune square Neptune and, for some cohorts, Pluto square Pluto.[2] Saturn’s limits and Uranus’s restlessness can put an established life under pressure from two directions.

A three-pass Uranus opposition may unfold as one episode: an initial change of direction, a peak or crisis on the return pass, then a conclusion at the last contact. Planets in Transit also describes cases in which a single pass presents the issue. Settling it can leave the remaining passes quiet; leaving it unresolved allows it to return from another angle. When Uranus stations at the aspect degree, the sustained contact usually takes precedence over faster passes as the time of the main event.[1] A postponed decision about leaving a job may become urgent during that pause.

Uranus’s roughly 84-year orbit gives the familiar halfway estimate of 42, but its speed varies along its elliptical orbit. It moves faster near perihelion, its nearest point to the Sun, and slower near aphelion, its farthest.[3] Earth’s motion adds the apparent retrograde loops. Different halves of the zodiac therefore take different amounts of time to cross.

The cohort range in The Gods of Change is 38 to 45. Births in the 1930s through 1950s tend toward the earlier part, about 38 to 41; births in the 1960s through 1980s tend toward 41 to 45.[2] The Sagittarius-to-Gemini half of the orbit puts the 1985 birth near the late end of that spread.

Virgo rising places Sagittarius in the fourth whole sign house and Gemini in the tenth. Natal Uranus in Sagittarius receives its opposition from Gemini across home and public work. A parent whose children have left may suddenly want a career that requires months away from the place the family has always lived.

Pisces rising reverses those positions: natal Uranus in Sagittarius is in the tenth and the Gemini transit in the fourth. A public career may give way to a more experimental domestic life, such as living between two countries. If the natal Moon is closely conjunct Uranus, the transit also opposes the Moon; attachment to home and familiar rhythms becomes part of the upheaval.
