Timing Techniques
Annual Profections
What Each House Year Means for You
Annual profections are a traditional Hellenistic timing technique for tracking which house topics are emphasized in a given year. Every birthday, the focus of your chart advances one house. At 24 you start a new 1st house year; at 25, the 2nd house is emphasized. The planet ruling the activated sign becomes your lord of the year, one of the main planets to watch through transits and solar-return testimony. Below you will find what each of the twelve house years brings into focus.

How the House Cycle Works
The count begins at birth. At age 0, the 1st house is active. Each birthday advances the focus one house forward through the zodiac. At age 1, the 2nd house. At age 2, the 3rd. The cycle completes at age 12 and begins again, so ages 12, 24, 36, and 48 are all 1st house years.
The active house identifies which life area gets emphasized for the year. A 7th house year can foreground partnerships and one-on-one dynamics. A 10th house year points attention toward career and public reputation. The house number can be found from age alone, while the lord of the year requires the rising sign and whole-sign houses. For a deeper look at finding and judging the ruling planet, see the lord of the year guide.
What Each House Year Emphasizes
Each of the twelve houses is associated with a distinct domain: identity (1st), money (2nd), communication (3rd), home (4th), creativity (5th), health (6th), partnerships (7th), shared resources and mortality (8th), travel and belief (9th), career (10th), community (11th), and retreat or hidden matters (12th). When your profection lands on a given house, that domain becomes a useful lens for the year.
The individual house pages below explore each domain in detail, including the typical ages, which transits to watch, what the lord of the year means in context, and a retrospective exercise for comparing past cycles. Select any house to read the full guide.
The 12-Year Rhythm
Because there are twelve houses and the count advances one per year, you revisit each house multiple times in a lifetime. Comparing the same house year at different ages reveals how a single life theme evolves. Your 7th house year at age 18 will look very different from the same house year at age 42, even though both foreground partnerships.
The cycle also means that certain ages repeat the same house position. Ages 0, 12, 24, and 36 are 1st house years. Ages 9, 21, 33, and 45 are 10th house years. Knowing the cycle lets you anticipate which life area to watch next, long before it arrives.
Combining Profections with Other Techniques
Profections are most useful when layered with transits and solar returns. If Saturn is transiting your 10th house during a 10th house profection year, career and responsibility themes may be reinforced. If your solar return Ascendant also falls in the same sign as the profected house, the year has another testimony pointing toward that house.
Monthly profections add another layer by advancing one house per month from your birthday, creating 12 sub-periods within each annual profection. This helps narrow which topics to watch during different parts of the year.
