Square

Aspect

A square forms when two planets are approximately 90 degrees apart, like two cars arriving at an intersection at the same time, both wanting to go straight. Neither can proceed without the other yielding, creating a stressful decision point. Squares represent internal tension that demands action and creative problem-solving. Though uncomfortable, they're the engine of growth -- many of the most accomplished people have charts full of squares, because the constant friction drove them to achieve. The tension never fully goes away, but over time you learn to work with it skillfully. Without squares, there's little motivation to change. "Hard" doesn't mean "bad" here. A square between Venus and Mars might create romantic frustration, but it also creates passion that a trine between the same planets never would. Squares force you to develop strength exactly where you feel the most resistance. In the aspect cycle, the square is a turning point that demands you commit to a direction.
