Degree Theory in Astrology

Each zodiac sign spans 30 degrees (0° through 29°), and the full zodiac circle is 360 degrees across all 12 signs. In degree theory, the 30 degrees within any sign carry the same pattern of zodiac energies, so the system applies identically regardless of which sign a planet occupies.

The 0° degree (Aries energy, raw initiation) and the 29° anaretic degree (urgency and culmination) are often considered the most significant. Critical degrees (0°, 13°, 26° for cardinal signs; 8-9°, 21-22° for fixed; 4°, 17° for mutable) also amplify planetary energy. The 22° degree is specifically noted by Nikola Stojanovic as the degree of extremes.

Degree theory was developed by Serbian astrologer Nikola Stojanovic. His system assigns zodiac sign energy to each degree based on a 12-degree cycle, a simpler and more systematic approach than Sabian symbols, which assign unique images to each of the 360 individual zodiac degrees.

Degree theory was developed within the Western tropical zodiac framework. While the degree numbering is the same in both systems, the sign boundaries differ (tropical vs. sidereal). Most practitioners apply degree theory using tropical positions, though some Vedic astrologers have adapted the concept to sidereal charts.
