Degree Theory Calculator
Enter your birth details to see the degree theory interpretation for every planet in your chart, including critical degrees and anaretic positions.
Source boundary for this calculator
This calculator maps each natal placement to a degree-theory overlay, then flags critical and anaretic degrees. The astronomical placement is calculated from the chart; the degree meaning is a modern interpretive layer.
Degree theory is not a traditional dignity system and does not prove personality, fate, talent, danger, relationship outcome, or life-event timing. Read it as a symbolic overlay after the sign, house, dignity, aspect, and timing context are already considered.
What is degree theory in astrology?
Degree theory is a system developed by Serbian astrologer Nikola Stojanovic that adds a second layer of meaning to every planet placement. In addition to the sign a planet occupies, its exact degree within that sign carries the energy of a corresponding zodiac sign: 1° = Aries, 2° = Taurus, 3° = Gemini, cycling through all twelve signs. The 0° degree is special: it amplifies the pure energy of whatever sign the planet is already in.
This creates a subtle overlay: Mars at 8° Aries still operates through Aries's direct, action-oriented style, but the 8° Scorpio energy adds intensity, investigative drive, and a willingness to dig beneath the surface. The sign gives the context; the degree gives a possible undercurrent. Reading both together can add a richer symbolic picture of how each planet is interpreted in practice.
Our calculator computes your natal chart using the JPL DE440s planetary ephemeris via ANISE, the same data NASA uses for mission planning, then maps each planet's degree to its degree theory interpretation. It also flags critical degrees (specific degrees that amplify a planet's energy) and the anaretic 29° degree, which carries the urgency of completion. Frequently Asked Questions
What is degree theory in astrology?
Degree theory is a system developed by Serbian astrologer Nikola Stojanovic that assigns zodiac sign energy to each degree from 0° to 29°. The 0° degree amplifies the pure energy of its host sign, while degrees 1° through 29° cycle through the zodiac: 1° = Aries, 2° = Taurus, 3° = Gemini, and so on. A planet's degree adds a secondary layer of meaning on top of the sign it occupies.
How does the degree theory calculator work?
Enter your birth details and our calculator computes your natal chart using the JPL DE440s planetary ephemeris via ANISE, the same data NASA uses for mission planning. It then maps each planet's degree to its corresponding zodiac energy, flags any critical or anaretic degrees, and shows you the degree theory interpretation for every placement in your chart.
What are critical degrees in astrology?
Critical degrees are specific degrees that some astrologers read as amplifying a planet's symbolism when occupied. For cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), the critical degrees are 0°, 13°, and 26°. For fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), they are 8° to 9° and 21° to 22°. For mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces), they are 4° and 17°.
What is the anaretic degree (29°)?
The 29th degree is called the anaretic degree. It represents the final degree of any sign before transitioning to the next. Planets at 29° are often read through urgency, completion, and accumulated experience. It can be interpreted as mastery, transition pressure, or unfinished business at the threshold, depending on the rest of the chart.
Do I need my exact birth time for degree theory?
An exact birth time gives the most accurate degree positions, especially for the Moon (which moves about 1° every 2 hours) and the Ascendant. Without an exact time, the outer planets and Sun will usually still be reliable because they move slowly enough that the degree will not change much over a day.
Is degree theory the same as Sabian symbols?
No. Degree theory (Nikola Stojanovic) maps each degree to a zodiac sign's energy on a 12-degree cycle. Sabian symbols assign a unique symbolic image to each of the 360 degrees of the zodiac. They are separate systems that can be used together but operate on different principles.
