Karmic Synastry Calculator

Karmic synastry compares two birth charts to surface the patterns each person carries into the relationship from before it began. In practice, that means flagging South Node contacts (recognition), Saturn contacts (responsibility), Chiron contacts (wound triggers), and 12th or 8th house overlays (hidden material). The calculator scores each contact and shows the evidence behind every flag.

The word “karmic” is the most over-loaded term in relationship astrology. Half the internet uses it to mean “you were married in a past life.” The other half uses it to mean “this person is teaching you a lesson you didn’t sign up for.” Both readings make the chart smaller than it is.

What we mean by karmic, on this page, is narrower and more useful: the pattern is older than the relationship. Every person walks into a partnership carrying material they were already carrying, written into their natal chart before they ever met the other person. When two charts share contacts that activate that older material on both sides, you get a relationship that feels weighted. Not because it’s destined. Because the patterns it presses on are not new.

That distinction matters because it changes what you do with the information. If “karmic” means “fated,” you wait it out. If “karmic” means “this is the pattern you both carry, here’s the evidence,” you can read it, name it, and decide what’s yours to work with. We built the second tool.

Most karmic synastry calculators return a number between 0 and 100 and a paragraph of mood lighting. We return the number too, because people want a number. But every point in the score has a line of evidence attached. If the score reads 76, you can see which contacts pushed it there, what their orbs are, and why each one is weighted the way it is.

Eight categories carry weight in the model: nodal axis contacts (NorthNode and SouthNode are 180° apart, so a contact to one implies a contact to the other), Saturn contacts to personal planets and angles, Chiron contacts to the lights and Venus, Vertex axis contacts, Hellenistic Lot of Eros contacts, Hellenistic Lot of Marriage contacts, 12th house overlays by whole sign, and 8th house overlays by whole sign. Reciprocal contacts (where both partners activate the same axis in each other) get a 1.4× multiplier because they are qualitatively different from one-way contacts.

Default orbs are 3° tight and 5° wide for the synastry aspects, 1.5° tight and 3° wide for the Vertex (the Vertex is sensitive to birth-time precision), and 2° tight and 4° wide for the Hellenistic lots. Tighter orbs score higher. Conjunctions score higher than oppositions, oppositions higher than squares, hard aspects higher than soft aspects within the same category. Stellium overlays (three or more planets in the same overlay house) get a 1.35× multiplier because a single planet in the 12th reads as a flavor while a stellium structures the relationship.

The Vertex is a sensitive angle in the chart, derived from the intersection of the prime vertical and the ecliptic. It moves at a different rate than the Ascendant, and it operates largely below conscious awareness. In synastry, conjunctions to the Vertex within 1.5° orb describe meetings that arrived rather than were chosen. People who carry tight Vertex contacts in their synastry report being struck by their partner from the start, often in ways they could not have planned.

We surface Vertex contacts to the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Saturn, Ascendant, and Midheaven on either side of the partnership. Conjunctions and oppositions weigh heaviest, with squares included at lower weight. The Anti-Vertex (180° opposite the Vertex) is captured by the same opposition aspect. Vertex contacts require both partners to have an exact birth time. The Vertex moves about one degree every four minutes, so a birth time off by ten minutes shifts the Vertex by enough to change which planets it contacts. If either chart has an approximate or unknown birth time, the Vertex receipts are skipped from the score and noted in the report.

The Hellenistic tradition computed dozens of lots, calculated points derived from arithmetic on natal longitudes. Two of them speak directly to relationship synastry: the Lot of Eros (romantic and erotic emphasis) and the Lot of Marriage (partnership emphasis). Both formulas are sect-aware: the calculation reverses between day and night charts, the same way the Lot of Spirit reverses around the Lot of Fortune.

For Eros we use the standard formula: by day, Asc + Venus - Spirit, where Spirit is itself Asc + Sun - Moon. The day formula reduces to Venus + Moon - Sun. By night, the formula reverses to 2·Asc + Moon - Sun - Venus. For Marriage we use the non-gendered Asc + Descendant - Venus by day, Asc + Venus - Descendant by night. This is the variant Brennan (2017) labels the “Lot of Marriage of Men” in the gendered tradition; we treat it as the canonical Lot of Marriage on this page. Both formulas are documented in the methodology section below so you can verify them against your own ephemeris.

In synastry, the calculator scans each partner’s Lot of Eros and Lot of Marriage against the other partner’s personal planets, Saturn, and angles, with a 4° wide orb and a 2° tight orb. A conjunction to the Lot of Marriage within 1° reads loud regardless of the rest of the chart. A square to the Lot of Eros at 3° orb is a softer flag, but still a data point worth seeing on the page rather than buried.

Saturn is the chart’s teacher in night charts and the chart’s heavy in day charts. The same Saturn contact reads materially differently depending on whether the partner who carries the Saturn was born before or after sunrise. We weight Saturn contacts by sect on the source side of the contact, applying a 15% penalty when the natal Saturn is in a day chart. Mars receives the mirror treatment in traditional weighting, easier in day, harder in night. None of the major free karmic calculators applies this distinction. It is basic Hellenistic literacy, and we built it in.

South Node contacts: recognition without explanation

When you meet someone whose South Node sits on your Venus, you usually know within ten minutes. The technical explanation is that the South Node represents inherited orientation: the patterns of feeling, response, and identification you brought into this life already worked out. When another person’s chart presses on it, you recognize them. You don’t always like them. You recognize them.

The reading depends on which side carries the South Node and which side carries the personal planet. If your South Node is on their Venus, you tend to feel fluent in their style of love before you have earned the fluency. If their South Node is on your Venus, you read as familiar to them in a way that flatters and confuses you in roughly equal measure. Neither version is destiny. Both are evidence.

Saturn contacts: the chart asks you to grow up together

Saturn is the most reliable predictor of relationship longevity in synastry, and one of the most reliable predictors of mid-relationship grief. Both readings are correct. A tight Saturn-Venus contact under three degrees produces relationships that are difficult to end even when ending them would obviously be the move. A Saturn-Sun contact does the same to the receiving partner’s identity: they shape themselves around the relationship, sometimes generously, sometimes not.

Squares and oppositions read louder than conjunctions and trines, as a rule. But conjunctions adhere harder. We weight all three hard aspects (conjunction, opposition, square) plus the trine and sextile, which most calculators skip. Soft Saturn looks easy from the outside and is therefore the most likely to be sleepwalked through.

Chiron contacts: wound activation, healing offer

Chiron is unique in synastry because it is almost always specific to a wound the chart-holder already had before the relationship began. When someone’s Chiron contacts your Venus or your Moon, they activate a soft place you carry. The activation is not the relationship’s doing. The relationship is just the room where the wound got light.

We flag Chiron contacts to the Sun, Moon, Venus, and Ascendant within four degrees. Conjunctions and oppositions are loudest. Squares are sneakier and tend to surface in conflict, not in tenderness. A Chiron contact does not mean the partner is a bad person, nor does it mean they are “your healer.” It means the wound is in the room.

12th and 8th house overlays: the unconscious and the shared underworld

When one partner’s planets fall in the other’s 12th house by whole sign, the receiving partner often cannot see those planets clearly in the projecting partner. They feel them. They cannot quite name them. This is why 12th house overlays produce relationships that feel dreamy, foggy, or strangely difficult to describe to friends.

8th house overlays are the underworld version: shared resources, intimacy, control, jealousy, and the hard material that surfaces when a relationship goes past the third date. Both overlays are weighted heavier when they include a stellium (three or more planets in the same overlay house). A two-planet overlay reads as a flavor. A stellium overlay structures the relationship.

The three terms get used as if they were the same word with three different audiences. They aren’t. Karmic is a pattern signature in the charts. It says the material you are working with in this relationship was already material before you met. Soulmate is a felt experience of resonance. It describes how a relationship feels from the inside, and the astrology can suggest where the resonance lives but cannot deliver the verdict.

Twin flame is a mirror dynamic. It describes a specific kind of psychological pairing where each person becomes the projection screen for the other’s unintegrated material. The astrology can fingerprint it, which is why we keep a separate twin flame calculator for the heavy outer-planet contacts that flag it. The karmic synastry calculator scores only the first of the three because karmic has a defensible signature. The other two require living the relationship to know.

The standard textbook line is that hard aspects (squares, oppositions) are challenging and soft aspects (trines, sextiles) are easy. That is true at the level of texture and false at the level of impact. A soft Saturn aspect is the one you don’t notice until you are seven years in and realize you have shaped your life around someone you never quite chose.

Hard aspects force the pattern into consciousness. Saturn square Venus shows up as friction, dissatisfaction, or the cyclic argument neither person wins. You either make peace with it, do the work it asks, or leave. Soft aspects allow the pattern to operate underneath awareness. Saturn trine Venus produces relationships of long duration with low friction and a curious sense, looking back, that you never quite decided. For karmic reading specifically, we treat hard and soft aspects as different qualitative reports, not different magnitudes. A hard South Node contact reads as recognition with friction. A soft South Node contact reads as recognition with comfort. Neither is more karmic than the other.

A karmic synastry contact sits in the chart from the day you meet until the day one of you dies. Most of the time, it is quiet. The relationship runs on its own logic, the contact is part of the underlying weather, and life continues. What changes the volume is timing. Four timing patterns reliably wake up a karmic contact.

Saturn return on a synastry Saturn contact: if the relationship contains a tight Saturn-Venus or Saturn-Sun contact, and one of you is moving through a Saturn return (typically ages 28 to 30, then 57 to 60), the synastry contact gets reactivated by the slow squares Saturn makes to its own natal position before the conjunction perfects.

Pluto transit to a shared composite axis: Pluto on a relationship’s composite Sun, Moon, or Descendant runs roughly 18 months on the conjunction. During that window the karmic material in the synastry stops being dormant. See the composite chart calculator to find your shared axis points.

Eclipses across the relationship’s nodal axis: when eclipses fall on either person’s natal NorthNode and SouthNode axis, the South Node contacts in the synastry get a roughly six-month amplification.

Profected year hands lordship to a synastry-active planet: if your profected lord of the year is also the planet doing the heavy lifting in your synastry contact list, the karmic theme gets a 12-month amplification.

Calculations use the NASA ANISE toolkit and the JPL DE-440 ephemeris for arc-second planetary precision. House overlays use whole-sign houses computed from each chart’s Ascendant sign, the conventional choice for synastry overlay reading in both the Hellenistic and modern traditions. The Vertex is taken from the chart’s computed angles. The Lot of Eros and Lot of Marriage are computed in TypeScript using the standard sect-aware Hellenistic formulas: Eros (day) reduces to Venus + Moon - Sun; Eros (night) is 2·Asc + Moon - Sun - Venus; Marriage (day) is 2·Asc + 180° - Venus; Marriage (night) is Venus - 180°.

Birth time is required for both partners only if you want angle contacts, house overlays, Vertex receipts, or Lot of Eros and Marriage receipts. NorthNode, Saturn, Chiron, and outer planet contacts work from birth date alone, with a slight precision penalty on Moon contacts since the Moon moves about half a degree per hour.

What this calculator is not: it isn’t a relationship verdict, it isn’t a soulmate detector, it doesn’t predict longevity, and it doesn’t rank one partner against another. It surfaces the patterns each person carries and weights the contacts that the Hellenistic and modern astrological traditions have, on balance, found to matter for relationship work.

If the score reads 82 and you are miserable, the score is correct and your relationship is still miserable. If the score reads 24 and you are happy, the score is correct and your relationship is still happy. The chart describes the material; you live the relationship.
